1Woe to those who make unjust laws,
to those who issue oppressive decrees,
2to deprive the poor of their rights
and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,
making widows their prey
and robbing the fatherless.
3What will you do on the day of reckoning,
when disaster comes from afar?
To whom will you run for help?
Where will you leave your riches?
4Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives
or fall among the slain.
Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away,
his hand is still upraised.
God’s Judgment on Assyria
5“Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of my anger,
in whose hand is the club of my wrath!
6I send him against a godless nation,
I dispatch him against a people who anger me,
to seize loot and snatch plunder,
and to trample them down like mud in the streets.
7But this is not what he intends,
this is not what he has in mind;
his purpose is to destroy,
to put an end to many nations.
8‘Are not my commanders all kings?’ he says.
9‘Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish?
Is not Hamath like Arpad,
and Samaria like Damascus?
10As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols,
kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images
as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?’ ”
12When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes. 13For he says:
“ ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this,
and by my wisdom, because I have understanding.
I removed the boundaries of nations,
I plundered their treasures;
like a mighty one I subdued10:13 Or treasures; / I subdued the mighty, their kings.
14As one reaches into a nest,
so my hand reached for the wealth of the nations;
as people gather abandoned eggs,
so I gathered all the countries;
not one flapped a wing,
or opened its mouth to chirp.’ ”
15Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it,
or the saw boast against the one who uses it?
As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up,
or a club brandish the one who is not wood!
16Therefore, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will send a wasting disease upon his sturdy warriors;
under his pomp a fire will be kindled
like a blazing flame.
17The Light of Israel will become a fire,
their Holy One a flame;
in a single day it will burn and consume
his thorns and his briers.
18The splendor of his forests and fertile fields
it will completely destroy,
as when a sick person wastes away.
19And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few
that a child could write them down.
The Remnant of Israel
20In that day the remnant of Israel,
the survivors of Jacob,
will no longer rely on him
who struck them down
but will truly rely on the Lord,
the Holy One of Israel.
21A remnant will return,10:21 Hebrew shear-jashub (see 7:3 and note); also in verse 22 a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.
22Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel,
only a remnant will return.
Destruction has been decreed,
overwhelming and righteous.
23The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
the destruction decreed upon the whole land.
24Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord Almighty, says:
“My people who live in Zion,
do not be afraid of the Assyrians,
who beat you with a rod
and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25Very soon my anger against you will end
and my wrath will be directed to their destruction.”
26The Lord Almighty will lash them with a whip,
as when he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb;
and he will raise his staff over the waters,
as he did in Egypt.
27In that day their burden will be lifted from your shoulders,
their yoke from your neck;
the yoke will be broken
because you have grown so fat.10:27 Hebrew; Septuagint broken / from your shoulders
28They enter Aiath;
they pass through Migron;
they store supplies at Mikmash.
29They go over the pass, and say,
“We will camp overnight at Geba.”
Ramah trembles;
Gibeah of Saul flees.
30Cry out, Daughter Gallim!
Listen, Laishah!
Poor Anathoth!
31Madmenah is in flight;
the people of Gebim take cover.
32This day they will halt at Nob;
they will shake their fist
at the mount of Daughter Zion,
at the hill of Jerusalem.
33See, the Lord, the Lord Almighty,
will lop off the boughs with great power.
The lofty trees will be felled,
the tall ones will be brought low.
34He will cut down the forest thickets with an ax;
Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
1Ai dos juízes injustos e dos que decretam leis injustas! 2Daqueles que não deixam haver justiça para os pobres, para as viúvas e para os órfãos! Sim, porque a verdade é que chegam até a roubar as viúvas e os órfãos!
3Que farão vocês, quando vier o castigo, nesse dia em que vier a desolação duma terra distante? Para quem hão de voltar-se para pedir ajuda? Onde vão pôr os vossos tesouros de forma a ficarem em segurança? 4Nada podereis fazer, senão andar aos tropeções por entre os prisioneiros e cair por entre os mortos.
Mesmo assim, a sua ira não desaparece. A sua mão continua a pesar sobre eles.
O julgamento de Deus sobre a Assíria
5Deus diz: “Ai da Assíria, a vara da minha ira! 6A sua força militar é a minha arma contra esta nação sem Deus, condenada e amaldiçoada. Fará nela escravos, saqueá-los-á e os pisará como o pó debaixo dos pés. 7Mas o rei da Assíria não saberá que fui eu quem o mandou. Pensará simplesmente que está a atacar o meu povo como parte do seu plano de conquista do mundo. 8E declarará que cada um dos seus príncipes será brevemente um rei, que governará cada uma das terras conquistadas. 9‘Destruiremos Calno como fizemos com Carquemis!’, dirá ele. ‘E Hamate cairá como tinha caído antes Arpade! Samaria será arrasada da mesma forma que Damasco! 10Sim, acabámos com muitos reinos cujos ídolos eram maiores do que os de Jerusalém e de Samaria! 11Por isso, quando tivermos derrotado Samaria e os seus ídolos, também haveremos de destruir Jerusalém e os seus ídolos!’ ”
12Depois do Senhor concluir toda a sua obra no monte Sião e em Jerusalém dirá: “Eis que castigarei o rei assírio por causa da sua arrogância, do seu coração orgulhoso e do seu olhar insolente.
13Gabam-se dizendo: ‘Foi com todo o nosso poder e com a nossa sabedoria que ganhámos estas guerras todas! Somos grandes e célebres! Com a nossa própria força derrubámos muralhas, vencemos povos e pilhámos os seus tesouros! 14Pela nossa grandeza assaltámos os ninhos da riqueza deles e acumulámos reinos conquistados, tal como o camponês junta os seus ovos; ninguém ousa mexer sequer um dedo ou abrir a boca para dizer uma palavra contra nós!’ ”
15Será normal que o machado se gabe de ter mais poder do que aquele que o emprega? E a serra, será ela mais poderosa do que o serrador? Poderá uma vara bater sem que uma mão a mova? Uma cana é capaz de andar sozinha?
16Por causa de toda essa tua arrogância, ó rei da Assíria, Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos, mandará uma praga que se disseminará no meio dessa tua tropa orgulhosa que os abaterá. 17Deus, que é a luz e o Santo de Israel, se fará como uma chama e como um fogo que os destruirá. Numa só noite fará arder esses espinheiros e essas sarças que são os assírios. 18O vasto exército da Assíria é como uma imensa floresta; mesmo assim, será destruído. Deus os desfará, corpo e alma; serão como uma pessoa doente que perde os sentidos. 19Só uns poucos escaparão de todo esse poderoso exército; serão tão poucos que uma criança os saberá contar!
O remanescente de Israel
20Por fim, os restantes de Israel, os sobreviventes de Jacob, não mais confiarão naquele que os feriu, mas passarão a depositar toda a sua confiança no Senhor, o Santo de Israel. 21Um resto deles se voltará para o Deus forte. 22Ainda que o número dos filhos de Israel seja agora tão numeroso como a areia das praias, apenas um pequeno número será salvo. A destruição está decretada, transbordante de justiça. 23Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos, dará execução à sua palavra na Terra. Sim, está já decidido que irá consumi-los.
24Contudo, Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos, diz: “Ó meu povo, que habitas em Sião, não tenhas receio dos assírios, quando vos oprimirem como vos fizeram os egípcios há muito tempo atrás. 25Isso não durará muito. Ao fim de pouco tempo a minha ira contra vocês acabará e então me levantarei contra eles e os destruirei.”
26O Senhor dos exércitos levantará o seu chicote para os matar, como aconteceu, quando Gedeão triunfou sobre os midianitas, junto à rocha de Orebe. Ele erguerá a sua vara sobre o mar, como fez contra os egípcios. 27Nesse dia, Deus acabará com a escravidão do seu povo; quebrará o jugo que pesa sobre os seus pescoços; será destruído por decreto seu.
28Vejam! Estão já a chegar os poderosos exércitos da Assíria! Já se encontram em Aiate; agora em Migrom; fazem já o armazenamento do seu equipamento militar em Micmás. 29Estão a passar o desfiladeiro e vão acampar em Geba para aí passarem a noite. A cidade de Ramá já treme de medo e o povo de Gibeá, a cidade de Saul, foge para salvar a vida. 30É natural que grites de terror, ó povo de Galim! Avisa bem alto, Laís, porque o grande exército se aproxima! Ó pobre Anatote, que destino desgraçado vai ser o teu! 31O povo de Madmena já fugiu e os habitantes de Gebim preparam-se para debandar. 32Mas o inimigo para em Nobe e aí fica o resto do dia; daí acena com o punho contra Jerusalém no monte Sião.
33Mas, olhem, olhem! Deus, o Senhor dos exércitos, está a cortar pela base essa poderosa árvore! Está a destruir todo esse vasto exército, tanto os das linhas de ataque como os da retaguarda, tanto oficiais como soldados. 34Ele, o Poderoso, abaterá a força do inimigo tal como o lenhador abate as árvores das florestas do Líbano.
