In Hebrew texts 12:1-14 is numbered 12:2-15. 1Ephraim feeds on the wind;
he pursues the east wind all day
and multiplies lies and violence.
He makes a treaty with Assyria
and sends olive oil to Egypt.
2The Lord has a charge to bring against Judah;
he will punish Jacob12:2 Jacob means he grasps the heel, a Hebrew idiom for he takes advantage of or he deceives. according to his ways
and repay him according to his deeds.
3In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel;
as a man he struggled with God.
4He struggled with the angel and overcame him;
he wept and begged for his favor.
He found him at Bethel
and talked with him there—
5the Lord God Almighty,
the Lord is his name!
6But you must return to your God;
maintain love and justice,
and wait for your God always.
7The merchant uses dishonest scales
and loves to defraud.
8Ephraim boasts,
“I am very rich; I have become wealthy.
With all my wealth they will not find in me
any iniquity or sin.”
9“I have been the Lord your God
ever since you came out of Egypt;
I will make you live in tents again,
as in the days of your appointed festivals.
10I spoke to the prophets,
gave them many visions
and told parables through them.”
11Is Gilead wicked?
Its people are worthless!
Do they sacrifice bulls in Gilgal?
Their altars will be like piles of stones
on a plowed field.
12Jacob fled to the country of Aram12:12 That is, Northwest Mesopotamia;
Israel served to get a wife,
and to pay for her he tended sheep.
13The Lord used a prophet to bring Israel up from Egypt,
by a prophet he cared for him.
14But Ephraim has aroused his bitter anger;
his Lord will leave on him the guilt of his bloodshed
and will repay him for his contempt.
이스라엘의 죄
1이스라엘 백성이 행하는 모든 것은 바람을 좇는 것처럼 무익하고 파괴 적이다. 그들은 거짓과 폭력을 일삼고 앗시리아와 조약을 맺으며 감람유를 이집트에 보내고 있다.
2여호와께서 유다를 책망하시고 이스라엘을 그 소행대로 벌하시며 그가 행한 대로 갚아 주실 것이다.
3야곱은 태에서 자기 형의 발뒤꿈치를 잡았고 자라서는 하나님과 힘을 겨루었다.
4그는 천사와 힘을 겨루어 이기고 울면서 12:4 히 ‘우리에게’그의 축복을 구하였으며 하나님은 벧엘에서 그를 만나시고 거기서 그와 말씀하셨다.
5저는 전능하신 하나님 여호와이시다. 여호와는 그가 경배받으실 이름이다.
6야곱의 후손들아, 너희는 너희 하나님께 돌아와서 사랑과 정의의 원리대로 살고 항상 너희 하나님을 바라보아라.
7여호와께서 말씀하신다. “이스라엘 백성은 저울을 속이는 상인처럼 정직하지 못하여 사기치는 일을 좋아하고 있다.
8에브라임은 ‘확실히 나는 부자이다. 내가 노력해서 재물을 얻었으니 아무도 내게서 죄될 만한 것을 발견하지 못할 것이다’ 하고 말한다.
9“나는 너희를 이집트에서 인도해 낸 너희 하나님 여호와이다. 내가 너희를 초막절 때처럼 다시 천막 생활을 하게 하겠다.
10내가 여러 예언자들에게 말하였고 그들에게 많은 환상을 보여 주었으며 예언자들을 통하여 많은 비유를 말하였다.”
11길르앗은 죄악으로 가득 차 있으며 그 백성은 정말 무가치하다. 그들이 길갈에서 송아지로 제사를 드리고 있으니 그 제단들이 들에 쌓인 돌무더기와도 같구나.
12옛날에 야곱이 12:12 또는 ‘아람 들로’메소포타미아로 갔다. 거기서 그는 아내를 얻고자 다른 사람을 섬기고 그의 양을 쳤으며
13여호와께서는 예언자를 통하여 이스라엘 백성을 이집트에서 인도해 내시고 그들을 돌보셨다.
14그러나 그들이 여호와를 몹시 노하게 하였으므로 그들의 살인죄에 대하여 주께서 그들을 벌하시고 자기가 받은 수치를 그들에게 돌리실 것이다.
