Freedom in Christ
1It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.
2Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised, Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3Again I declare to every man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law. 4You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5For through the Spirit we eagerly await by faith the righteousness for which we hope. 6For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.
7You were running a good race. Who cut in on you to keep you from obeying the truth? 8That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who calls you. 9“A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” 10I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty. 11Brothers and sisters, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been abolished. 12As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole way and emasculate themselves!
Life by the Spirit
13You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh5:13 In contexts like this, the Greek word for flesh (sarx) refers to the sinful state of human beings, often presented as a power in opposition to the Spirit; also in verses 16, 17, 19 and 24; and in 6:8.; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”5:14 Lev. 19:18 15If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
16So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever5:17 Or you do not do what you want. 18But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.
19The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.
22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.
1Cristo ci ha liberati, assicuratevi quindi di rimanere liberi, e non vi lasciate incatenare di nuovo alle leggi e alle cerimonie ebraiche! 2Ascoltatemi bene, perché è importante: se sperate nella circoncisione e nellʼosservanza delle leggi ebraiche per essere giusti agli occhi di Dio, allora Cristo non può salvarvi. 3Lo ripeto: chiunque cerca di ottenere il favore di Dio con la circoncisione è impegnato ad obbedire per sempre a tutte le altre leggi ebraiche, pena la morte. 4Cristo non vi serve a niente, se pensate di esaurire il vostro debito con Dio osservando quelle leggi. In questo caso non avete più la grazia di Dio.
5Invece noi, con lʼaiuto dello Spirito Santo, facciamo affidamento sulla morte di Cristo perché i nostri peccati siano cancellati e per essere giustificati agli occhi del Signore. 6A noi, che abbiamo avuto da Cristo la vita eterna, non importa proprio niente di essere circoncisi, né di osservare o meno le cerimonie ebraiche, ciò che veramente conta è soltanto la fede che agisce per mezzo dellʼamore.
7Stavate andando così bene! Chi vi ha sbarrato la strada per impedirvi di seguire la verità? 8Certamente non è stato Dio, perché è stato proprio lui a chiamarvi alla libertà in Cristo. 9Ma badate bene: un poʼ di lievito fa fermentare tutta la pasta.
10Ho fede che il Signore vi riporterà a pensarla come me riguardo a queste cose. Ma chi vi ha turbato e confuso, chiunque sia, avrà ciò che si merita!
11Certa gente ha il coraggio di dire che sono proprio io a predicare che la circoncisione e le leggi ebraiche sono necessarie per essere salvati. Ebbene, se predicassi così, gli Ebrei non mi perseguiterebbero di certo! Il fatto che sia ancora perseguitato, dimostra che sto ancora predicando che la salvezza si ottiene solo mediante la fede nella croce di Cristo.
12Ma perché questi maestri che portano fra voi tanto scompiglio non si fanno addirittura castrare e vi lasciano finalmente in pace?! 13Cari fratelli, voi avete ricevuto la libertà: non la libertà di fare il male, ma la libertà dʼamarvi e servirvi a vicenda. 14Infatti tutta la legge si riassume in questʼunico comandamento: «Ama il prossimo tuo come te stesso». 15Se invece di amarvi, vi comportate come belve, mordendovi e sbranandovi fra voi, badate di non distruggervi a vicenda!
Ubbidite allo Spirito Santo
16Vi dico dunque: obbedite soltanto allo Spirito Santo; egli vi dirà dove andare e cosa fare. In questo modo non correrete più il rischio di fare cose sbagliate per soddisfare il vostro egoismo naturale. 17Perché, per istinto, a noi piace fare certe cose che sono proprio il contrario di ciò che lo Spirito Santo cʼinsegna; e le buone cose che desideriamo fare quando lo Spirito ci guida sono esattamente il contrario dei nostri desideri naturali. Queste due forze dentro di noi sono sempre in lotta fra loro; e così non possiamo fare ciò che vorremmo. 18Invece, quando vi lasciate guidare dallo Spirito Santo, non avete più bisogno di sforzarvi per obbedire alle leggi ebraiche.
19Tutti sanno quali sono i risultati, se si seguono gli istinti carnali: relazioni sessuali illecite, immoralità, vita viziosa, 20idolatria, spiritismo (e cioè lʼincoraggiare lʼattività dei diavoli), odio e discordie, gelosie, ira, liti, convinzione che nessuno è nel giusto allʼinfuori di quelli che appartengono al proprio gruppo. 21Ed ancora: invidia, ubriachezza, orge ed altre cose del genere. Vi ripeto di nuovo ciò che ho detto prima: quelli che fanno queste cose non faranno parte del regno di Dio.
22Ma quando è lo Spirito Santo che guida la nostra vita, ecco che cosa produrrà in noi: amore, gioia, pace, pazienza, benevolenza, bontà, fedeltà, dolcezza, autocontrollo. 23Ecco, allora, che non ci troveremo più in conflitto con la legge ebraica.
24Quelli che appartengono a Cristo hanno crocifisso alla sua croce il proprio egoismo con le sue voglie e le sue passioni.
25Perciò, se ora viviamo per la potenza dello Spirito Santo, anche la nostra vita deve essere guidata dallo Spirito Santo! 26Allora non avremo più bisogno di cercare onori e popolarità, che portano a gelosie e provocazioni.
