Rebuilding the Altar
1When the seventh month came and the Israelites had settled in their towns, the people assembled together as one in Jerusalem. 2Then Joshua son of Jozadak and his fellow priests and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his associates began to build the altar of the God of Israel to sacrifice burnt offerings on it, in accordance with what is written in the Law of Moses the man of God. 3Despite their fear of the peoples around them, they built the altar on its foundation and sacrificed burnt offerings on it to the Lord, both the morning and evening sacrifices. 4Then in accordance with what is written, they celebrated the Festival of Tabernacles with the required number of burnt offerings prescribed for each day. 5After that, they presented the regular burnt offerings, the New Moon sacrifices and the sacrifices for all the appointed sacred festivals of the Lord, as well as those brought as freewill offerings to the Lord. 6On the first day of the seventh month they began to offer burnt offerings to the Lord, though the foundation of the Lord’s temple had not yet been laid.
Rebuilding the Temple
7Then they gave money to the masons and carpenters, and gave food and drink and olive oil to the people of Sidon and Tyre, so that they would bring cedar logs by sea from Lebanon to Joppa, as authorized by Cyrus king of Persia.
8In the second month of the second year after their arrival at the house of God in Jerusalem, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Joshua son of Jozadak and the rest of the people (the priests and the Levites and all who had returned from the captivity to Jerusalem) began the work. They appointed Levites twenty years old and older to supervise the building of the house of the Lord. 9Joshua and his sons and brothers and Kadmiel and his sons (descendants of Hodaviah3:9 Hebrew Yehudah, a variant of Hodaviah) and the sons of Henadad and their sons and brothers—all Levites—joined together in supervising those working on the house of God.
10When the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests in their vestments and with trumpets, and the Levites (the sons of Asaph) with cymbals, took their places to praise the Lord, as prescribed by David king of Israel. 11With praise and thanksgiving they sang to the Lord:
“He is good;
his love toward Israel endures forever.”
And all the people gave a great shout of praise to the Lord, because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid. 12But many of the older priests and Levites and family heads, who had seen the former temple, wept aloud when they saw the foundation of this temple being laid, while many others shouted for joy. 13No one could distinguish the sound of the shouts of joy from the sound of weeping, because the people made so much noise. And the sound was heard far away.
A reconstrução do altar
1Durante o sétimo mês3.1 Mês de Tisri ou Etanim. Entre a lua nova do mês de setembro e o mês de outubro., todos os que tinham regressado a Judá vieram até Jerusalém, das terras onde estavam a morar. 2Jesua, filho de Josadaque, com os seus companheiros sacerdotes, mais Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, com o seu clã, 3reconstruíram o altar do Deus de Israel. Ofereceram holocaustos sobre ele, tal como está escrito nas instruções de Moisés, o homem de Deus. O altar foi reconstruído sobre os seus próprios alicerces e foi usado para os sacrifícios da manhã e da tarde, oferecendo-se nele holocaustos ao Senhor, apesar do medo que sentiam dos povos ao redor.
4Celebraram também a festa dos tabernáculos, de acordo com as instruções de Moisés, oferecendo holocaustos, especificamente para cada dia da festa. 5Também apresentaram os holocaustos requeridos e os sacrifícios para as celebrações da lua nova, e para outras festas regulares anuais dedicadas ao Senhor. Ofereceram ainda as ofertas voluntárias ao Senhor. 6Foi no primeiro dia do sétimo mês que os sacerdotes começaram a sacrificar holocaustos ao Senhor. Isto foi antes de se colocarem os fundamentos para a reconstrução do templo.
Reparação dos alicerces do templo
7Contrataram depois pedreiros e carpinteiros, e compraram madeira de cedro ao povo de Tiro e de Sídon, pagando-lhes com comida, vinho e azeite. A madeira era trazida das montanhas do Líbano e transportada pelo mar, ao longo da costa do Mediterrâneo, até Jope; isto de acordo com a concessão de Ciro, rei da Pérsia.
8As obras efetivas de reconstrução do templo iniciaram-se no segundo mês3.8 Mês de Zive. Entre a lua nova do mês de abril e o mês de maio. do segundo ano da chegada dos exilados a Jerusalém. Os trabalhos foram realizados por todos os que tinham regressado, sob a direção de Zorobabel, filho de Sealtiel, de Josué, filho de Josadaque, e dos outros sacerdotes, seus companheiros, e dos levitas. Os levitas, a partir da idade de 20 anos, eram designados para supervisionar as obras. 9Jesua, com os seus filhos e irmãos, juntamente com Cadmiel e seus filhos, que eram descendentes de Judá, e com os companheiros, puseram-se a dirigir os que trabalhavam no templo de Deus. Juntamente com eles dirigiam também os trabalhos os levitas descendentes de Henadade.
10Quando os trabalhos de reparação dos alicerces do templo acabaram, os sacerdotes vestiram os seus trajes sacerdotais e tocaram as cornetas; os descendentes de Asafe vieram, igualmente, com os seus címbalos para louvarem o Senhor, conforme as indicações de David, rei de Israel.
11Repetiam com louvor e gratidão este cântico:
“O Senhor é bom;
e o seu amor para com Israel é eterno.”
Todo o povo manifestou exuberantemente a sua grande alegria, louvando também o Senhor, por os alicerces do templo estarem reconstruídos.
12Muitos dos sacerdotes, levitas e outros chefes, homens idosos que se lembravam ainda do belo templo de Salomão, choravam de comoção, enquanto outros expressavam jubilosamente os seus sentimentos. 13As manifestações da emoção do povo misturavam-se, de tal forma que se podiam ouvir a uma grande distância.
