Oppression, Toil, Friendlessness
1Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
and they have no comforter.
2And I declared that the dead,
who had already died,
are happier than the living,
who are still alive.
3But better than both
is the one who has never been born,
who has not seen the evil
that is done under the sun.
4And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
5Fools fold their hands
and ruin themselves.
6Better one handful with tranquillity
than two handfuls with toil
and chasing after the wind.
7Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
8There was a man all alone;
he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
yet his eyes were not content with his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
“and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
a miserable business!
9Two are better than one,
because they have a good return for their labor:
10If either of them falls down,
one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
and has no one to help them up.
11Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm.
But how can one keep warm alone?
12Though one may be overpowered,
two can defend themselves.
A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
Advancement Is Meaningless
13Better a poor but wise youth than an old but foolish king who no longer knows how to heed a warning. 14The youth may have come from prison to the kingship, or he may have been born in poverty within his kingdom. 15I saw that all who lived and walked under the sun followed the youth, the king’s successor. 16There was no end to all the people who were before them. But those who came later were not pleased with the successor. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
ظلم، زحمت و تنهايی
1سپس ظلمهايی را که در زير اين آسمان می‌شد مشاهده كردم. اشكهای مظلومانی را ديدم كه فريادرسی نداشتند. قدرت در دست ظالمان بود و كسی نبود كه به داد مظلومان برسد. 2پس گفتم كسانی كه قبل از ما مرده‌اند از آنانی كه هنوز زنده‌اند خوشبخت‌ترند؛ 3و خوشبخت‌تر از همه كسانی هستند كه هنوز به دنيا نيامده‌اند، زيرا ظلمهايی را كه زير اين آسمان می‌شود نديده‌اند.
4همچنين متوجه شدم كه به سبب حسادت است كه مردم تلاش می‌كنند موفقيت كسب كنند. اين نيز مانند دويدن به دنبال باد، بيهوده است. 5كسی كه دست روی دست می‌گذارد و گرسنگی می‌كشد، احمق است؛ 6اما كسی هم كه دائم مشغول كار است و تلاش می‌كند ثروت بيشتری به دست آورد به دنبال باد می‌دود. بهتر است انسان يک لقمه نان به دست آورد و با آسودگی بخورد.
7و نيز در زير آسمان بيهودگی ديگری ديدم: 8مردی بود كه تنها زندگی می‌كرد؛ نه پسری داشت و نه برادری. با اين حال سخت تلاش می‌كرد و از اندوختن مال و ثروت سير نمی‌شد. او برای چه كسی زحمت می‌كشيد و خود را از لذات زندگی محروم می‌كرد؟ اين نيز رنج و زحمت بيهوده‌ای است.
9دو نفر از يک نفر بهترند، زيرا نفع بيشتری از كارشان عايدشان می‌شود. 10اگر يكی از آنها بيفتد، ديگری او را بلند می‌كند؛ اما چه بيچاره است شخصی كه می‌افتد ولی كسی را ندارد كه به او كمک كند. 11وقتی دو نفر كنار هم می‌خوابند، گرم می‌شوند؛ اما كسی كه تنهاست چطور می‌تواند خود را گرم كند؟ 12اگر شخص، تنها باشد و كسی بر او حمله كند، از پای درمی‌آيد، اما اگر دو نفر باشند می‌توانند از خود دفاع كنند. ريسمان سه لا به آسانی پاره نمی‌شود.
بيهودگی ترقی
13يک جوان فقير و حكيم بهتر از پادشاه پير و نادانی است كه نصيحت نمی‌پذيرد. 14چنين جوان فقيری حتی ممكن است از كنج زندان به تخت پادشاهی برسد. 15مردمی كه زير اين آسمان زندگی می‌كنند از چنين جوانی كه جانشين پادشاه شده است حمايت می‌نمايند. 16او می‌تواند بر عدهٔ زيادی حكومت كند؛ اما نسل بعدی، او را نيز بركنار می‌كند! اين نيز مانند دويدن به دنبال باد، بيهوده است.
