Paul’s Rights as an Apostle
1Am I not free? Am I not an apostle? Have I not seen Jesus our Lord? Are you not the result of my work in the Lord? 2Even though I may not be an apostle to others, surely I am to you! For you are the seal of my apostleship in the Lord.
3This is my defense to those who sit in judgment on me. 4Don’t we have the right to food and drink? 5Don’t we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas9:5 That is, Peter? 6Or is it only I and Barnabas who lack the right to not work for a living?
7Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink the milk? 8Do I say this merely on human authority? Doesn’t the Law say the same thing? 9For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.”9:9 Deut. 25:4 Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ.
13Don’t you know that those who serve in the temple get their food from the temple, and that those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? 14In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel.
15But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me, for I would rather die than allow anyone to deprive me of this boast. 16For when I preach the gospel, I cannot boast, since I am compelled to preach. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel! 17If I preach voluntarily, I have a reward; if not voluntarily, I am simply discharging the trust committed to me. 18What then is my reward? Just this: that in preaching the gospel I may offer it free of charge, and so not make full use of my rights as a preacher of the gospel.
Paul’s Use of His Freedom
19Though I am free and belong to no one, I have made myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible. 20To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.
The Need for Self-Discipline
24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. 26Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. 27No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.

1ข้าพเจ้าไม่มีเสรีภาพหรือ? ข้าพเจ้าไม่เป็นอัครทูตหรือ? ข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้เห็นพระเยซูองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าของเราหรือ? พวกท่านไม่ใช่ผลงานของข้าพเจ้าในองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าหรือ? 2แม้ข้าพเจ้าอาจไม่ใช่อัครทูตสำหรับคนอื่น แต่ข้าพเจ้าเป็นอัครทูตสำหรับท่านทั้งหลายอย่างแน่นอน! เพราะท่านคือตราแห่งความเป็นอัครทูตของข้าพเจ้าในองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้า
3หากใครมาพิพากษาข้าพเจ้า ข้อแก้ต่างของข้าพเจ้ามีดังนี้ 4พวกเราไม่มีสิทธิ์กินดื่มหรือ? 5พวกเราไม่มีสิทธิ์พาภรรยาซึ่งเป็นผู้เชื่อไปไหนมาไหนด้วยกันเหมือนที่อัครทูตอื่นๆ กับน้องๆ ขององค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าและเคฟาส9:5 คือเปโตร ทำหรือ? 6หรือมีแต่ข้าพเจ้ากับบารนาบัสเท่านั้นที่ต้องทำงานหาเลี้ยงชีพ?
7ใครบ้างที่เป็นทหารโดยเสียค่าใช้จ่ายเอง? ใครบ้างปลูกองุ่นและไม่ได้กินผลองุ่นจากสวนนั้น? ใครบ้างเลี้ยงปศุสัตว์และไม่ได้กินนม? 8ข้าพเจ้าพูดเช่นนี้ตามทัศนะของมนุษย์เท่านั้นหรือ? บทบัญญัติไม่ได้กล่าวไว้อย่างเดียวกันหรือ? 9เพราะธรรมบัญญัติของโมเสสเขียนไว้ว่า “อย่าเอาตะกร้อครอบปากวัวซึ่งนวดข้าวอยู่”9:9 ฉธบ.25:4 พระเจ้าทรงห่วงใยแต่วัวเท่านั้นหรอกหรือ? 10แน่นอนพระองค์ตรัสเช่นนี้ก็เพื่อเราไม่ใช่หรือ? ถูกแล้วข้อนี้เขียนขึ้นเพื่อเราทั้งหลาย เพราะเมื่อคนไถนาและนวดข้าว พวกเขาย่อมทำหน้าที่โดยหวังจะได้รับส่วนแบ่งตอนเก็บเกี่ยว 11หากเราได้หว่านเมล็ดฝ่ายจิตวิญญาณในหมู่พวกท่าน จะเกินไปหรือถ้าเราจะเก็บเกี่ยววัตถุจากพวกท่านบ้าง? 12ถ้าคนอื่นๆ ยังมีสิทธิ์ได้รับการสนับสนุนจากท่าน เราก็ควรจะได้รับมากยิ่งกว่าไม่ใช่หรือ?
แต่เราก็ไม่ได้ใช้สิทธิ์นี้เลย ในทางตรงกันข้ามเราสู้ทนทุกอย่างเพื่อไม่ให้เป็นอุปสรรคขัดขวางข่าวประเสริฐเรื่องพระคริสต์ได้ 13ท่านไม่รู้หรือว่าผู้ที่ทำงานในพระวิหารก็ได้รับอาหารของตนจากพระวิหาร และผู้ซึ่งปรนนิบัติอยู่ที่แท่นบูชาก็รับส่วนแบ่งจากเครื่องบูชาบนแท่น? 14เช่นกันองค์พระผู้เป็นเจ้าทรงบัญชาไว้ว่าผู้ที่ประกาศข่าวประเสริฐควรได้รับปัจจัยเลี้ยงชีพจากข่าวประเสริฐ
15แต่ข้าพเจ้าไม่เคยใช้สิทธิ์ใดๆ เหล่านี้เลย และที่ข้าพเจ้าเขียนมานี้ ข้าพเจ้าก็ไม่ได้หวังให้ท่านทำเช่นนั้นแก่ข้าพเจ้า ข้าพเจ้ายอมตายเสียดีกว่าให้ใครมาพรากสิ่งเชิดหน้าชูตาข้อนี้ไป 16กระนั้นเมื่อข้าพเจ้าประกาศข่าวประเสริฐ ข้าพเจ้าก็ไม่มีเหตุที่จะอวดได้ เพราะข้าพเจ้าจำต้องประกาศ วิบัติแก่ข้าพเจ้าหากข้าพเจ้าไม่ประกาศข่าวประเสริฐ! 17หากข้าพเจ้าประกาศด้วยความสมัครใจ ข้าพเจ้าย่อมได้รับรางวัลตอบแทน หากข้าพเจ้าประกาศโดยไม่สมัครใจ ข้าพเจ้าก็เพียงแต่ทำหน้าที่ไปตามที่ได้รับมอบหมาย 18แล้วข้าพเจ้าได้อะไรเป็นรางวัล? รางวัลก็คือในการประกาศข่าวประเสริฐ ข้าพเจ้าจะได้ประกาศโดยไม่คิดค่าตอบแทน และด้วยเหตุนี้ข้าพเจ้าจึงไม่ใช้สิทธิ์ของตนเมื่อประกาศข่าวประเสริฐ
19แม้ข้าพเจ้าเป็นอิสระและไม่ขึ้นกับใคร ข้าพเจ้าก็ยอมตัวเป็นทาสรับใช้คนทั้งปวงเพื่อชนะใจผู้คนให้มากที่สุดเท่าที่จะมากได้ 20ต่อพวกยิวข้าพเจ้าก็เป็นเหมือนคนยิวเพื่อชนะใจคนยิว ต่อบรรดาผู้อยู่ใต้บทบัญญัติข้าพเจ้าก็เป็นเหมือนผู้อยู่ใต้บทบัญญัติ (แม้ตัวข้าพเจ้าเองไม่ได้อยู่ใต้บทบัญญัติ) เพื่อจะได้ชนะใจผู้อยู่ใต้บทบัญญัติ 21ต่อบรรดาผู้ที่ไม่มีบทบัญญัติข้าพเจ้าก็เป็นเหมือนผู้ที่ไม่มีบทบัญญัติ (ทั้งๆ ที่ข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้เป็นอิสระจากบทบัญญัติของพระเจ้า แต่อยู่ใต้บทบัญญัติของพระคริสต์) เพื่อจะได้ชนะใจผู้ที่ไม่มีบทบัญญัติ 22ต่อผู้อ่อนแอข้าพเจ้าก็เป็นผู้อ่อนแอ เพื่อจะได้ชนะใจผู้อ่อนแอ ข้าพเจ้าได้เป็นคนทุกแบบต่อคนทั้งปวง เพื่อว่าข้าพเจ้าจะช่วยบางคนให้รอดโดยทุกวิถีทางที่เป็นไปได้ 23ข้าพเจ้าทำทุกสิ่งนี้เพราะเห็นแก่ข่าวประเสริฐ เพื่อข้าพเจ้าจะได้มีส่วนร่วมในพระพรแห่งข่าวประเสริฐ
24ท่านไม่รู้หรือว่าในการแข่งขัน นักวิ่งทุกคนออกวิ่ง แต่มีเพียงคนเดียวที่ได้รับรางวัล? จงวิ่งอย่างนั้นเพื่อให้ได้รางวัลมา 25ผู้เข้าแข่งขันทุกคนผ่านการฝึกซ้อมอย่างเข้มงวด เขาทำอย่างนั้นเพื่อมงกุฎอันไม่ยืนยง ส่วนเราทำเพื่อมงกุฎอันยืนยงเป็นนิตย์ 26เหตุฉะนั้นข้าพเจ้าจึงไม่ได้วิ่งอย่างไม่มีจุดหมาย ข้าพเจ้าไม่ได้ต่อสู้เหมือนคนชกลม 27เปล่าเลย ข้าพเจ้าฝึกฝนตนเองให้อยู่ในการควบคุม เพื่อว่าหลังจากที่ข้าพเจ้าได้ประกาศแก่คนอื่นแล้ว ข้าพเจ้าเองจะไม่ขาดคุณสมบัติที่จะรับรางวัล
