Israel Destroys Arad
1The Canaanite king of the city of Arad lived in the Negev Desert. He heard that Israel was coming along the road to Atharim. So he attacked the Israelites. He captured some of them. 2Then Israel made a promise to the Lord. They said, “Hand these people over to us. If you do, we will set their cities apart to you in a special way to be destroyed.” 3The Lord gave Israel what they asked for. He handed the Canaanites over to them. Israel completely destroyed them and their towns. So that place was named Hormah.
Moses Makes a Bronze Snake
4The Israelites traveled from Mount Hor along the way to the Red Sea. They wanted to go around Edom. But they grew tired on the way. 5So they spoke against God and against Moses. They said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt? Do you want us to die here in the desert? We don’t have any bread! We don’t have any water! And we hate this awful food!”
6Then the Lord sent poisonous snakes among the Israelites. The snakes bit them. Many of the people died. 7The others came to Moses. They said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.
8The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake. Put it up on a pole. Then anyone who is bitten can look at it and remain alive.” 9So Moses made a bronze snake. He put it up on a pole. Then anyone who was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake remained alive.
The People Continue On to Moab
10The Israelites moved on. They camped at Oboth. 11Then they started out from Oboth. They camped in Iye Abarim. It’s in the desert on the eastern border of Moab. 12From there they moved on. They camped in the Zered Valley. 13They started out from there and camped by the Arnon River. It’s in the desert that spreads out into the territory of the Amorites. The Arnon is the border of Moab. It’s between Moab and the Amorites. 14Here is what the Book of the Wars of the Lord says about it.
“Sing about Zahab in Suphah and the valleys.
Sing about the Arnon 15and the slopes of the valleys.
They lead to the settlement called Ar.
They lie along the border of Moab.”
16From there the Israelites continued on to Beer. That was the well where the Lord spoke to Moses. He said, “Gather the people together. I will give them water to drink.”
17Then Israel sang a song. They said,
“Spring up, you well!
Sing about it.
18Sing about the well the princes dug.
Sing about the well the nobles of the people dug.
All their rulers were holding their scepters and walking sticks.”
Then the Israelites went from the desert to Mattanah. 19They went from Mattanah to Nahaliel. They went from Nahaliel to Bamoth. 20And they went from Bamoth to a valley in Moab. It’s the valley where the highest slopes of Pisgah look out over a dry and empty land.
Israel Wins the Battle Over Sihon and Og
21The Israelites sent messengers to speak to Sihon. He was the king of the Amorites. The messengers said to him,
22“Let us pass through your country. We won’t go off the road into any field or vineyard. We won’t drink water from any well. We’ll travel along the King’s Highway. We’ll just go straight through your territory.”
23But Sihon wouldn’t let Israel pass through his territory. He gathered his whole army together. Then he marched out into the desert against Israel. When he reached Jahaz, he fought against Israel. 24But Israel put him to death with their swords. They took over his land. They took everything from the Arnon River to the Jabbok River. But they didn’t take over any of the land of the Ammonites. That’s because the Ammonites had built strong forts along their border. 25The Israelites captured all the cities of the Amorites. Then they settled down in them. They captured the city of Heshbon. They also captured all the settlements around it. 26Sihon, the king of the Amorites, ruled in Heshbon. He had fought against an earlier king of Moab. Sihon had taken from him all his land all the way to the Arnon River.
27That’s why the poets say,
“Come to Heshbon. Let it be built again.
Let Sihon’s city be made as good as new.
28“Fire went out from Heshbon.
A blaze went out from the city of Sihon.
It burned up Ar in Moab.
It burned up the citizens who lived on Arnon’s hills.
29Moab, how terrible it is for you!
People of Chemosh, you are destroyed!
Chemosh has deserted his sons and daughters.
His sons have run away from the battle.
His daughters have become prisoners.
He has handed all of them over to Sihon,
the king of the Amorites.
30“But we have taken them over.
Heshbon’s rule has been destroyed all the way to Dibon.
We have destroyed them as far as Nophah.
Nophah goes all the way to Medeba.”
31So Israel settled in the land of the Amorites.
32Moses sent spies to the city of Jazer. The Israelites captured the settlements around it. They drove out the Amorites who were there. 33Then they turned and went up along the road toward Bashan. Og was the king of Bashan. He and his whole army marched out. They went to fight against Israel at Edrei.
34The Lord said to Moses, “Do not be afraid of Og. I have handed him over to you. I have given you his whole army. I have also given you his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon, the king of the Amorites. He ruled in Heshbon.”
35So the Israelites struck down Og and his sons. And they wiped out his whole army. They didn’t leave anyone alive. They took over his land for themselves.
Derrota de Arad
1Cuando el cananeo que reinaba en la ciudad de Arad y vivía en el Néguev se enteró de que los israelitas venían por el camino de Atarín, los atacó y capturó a algunos de ellos. 2Entonces el pueblo de Israel hizo esta promesa al Señor: «Si tú nos aseguras la victoria sobre este enemigo, destruiremos por completo sus ciudades». 3El Señor atendió a la súplica de los israelitas y les concedió la victoria sobre los cananeos, a los que destruyeron por completo, junto con sus ciudades. Por eso a aquel lugar se le llamó Jormá.21:3 En hebreo, Jormá significa destrucción.
La serpiente de bronce
4Los israelitas salieron del monte Hor por la ruta del mar Rojo, bordeando el territorio de Edom. En el camino se impacientaron 5y comenzaron a hablar contra Dios y contra Moisés:
—¿Para qué nos trajeron ustedes de Egipto a morir en este desierto? ¡Aquí no hay pan ni agua! ¡Ya estamos hartos de esta pésima comida!
6Por eso el Señor mandó contra ellos serpientes venenosas, para que los mordieran, y muchos israelitas murieron. 7El pueblo se acercó entonces a Moisés y dijo:
—Hemos pecado al hablar contra el Señor y contra ti. Ruégale al Señor que nos quite esas serpientes.
Moisés intercedió por el pueblo, 8y el Señor le dijo:
—Hazte una serpiente y ponla en un asta. Todos los que sean mordidos y la miren, vivirán.
9Moisés hizo una serpiente de bronce y la puso en un asta. Los que eran mordidos miraban a la serpiente de bronce y vivían.
En camino a Moab
10Los israelitas se pusieron en marcha y acamparon en Obot. 11De allí partieron y acamparon en Iyé Abarín, que está en el desierto, al este de Moab. 12De allí partieron y acamparon en el valle de Zéred. 13De allí partieron y acamparon al otro lado del río Arnón, que está en el desierto que se extiende desde el territorio de los amorreos. El río Arnón sirve de frontera entre el territorio de los moabitas y el de los amorreos. 14Por eso puede leerse en el libro de las guerras del Señor:
«…pasamos por Vaheb, en Sufá,
por los valles y el Arnón; 15la ladera de los valles
que se extienden hasta la región de Ar
y la frontera de Moab».
16De allí continuaron hasta Ber, el pozo donde el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Reúne al pueblo y les daré agua».
17En esa ocasión Israel entonó este cántico:
«¡Que brote agua del pozo!
¡Canten en su honor!
18¡Pozo que cavaron los príncipes,
y que los nobles del pueblo abrieron con sus cetros y bastones de mando!».
Desde el desierto se dirigieron a Mataná; 19de Mataná a Najaliel, de Najaliel a Bamot, 20y de Bamot al valle que está en la región de Moab, hasta la cumbre del monte Pisgá, desde donde puede verse el desierto de Jesimón.
Victoria sobre Sijón
21Israel envió mensajeros a Sijón, rey de los amorreos, con este mensaje:
22«Te pido que nos dejes pasar por tu territorio. Te prometo que no entraremos en ningún campo ni viña, ni beberemos agua de ningún pozo. Nos limitaremos a pasar por el camino real, hasta que salgamos de tu territorio».
23Pero Sijón no dejó que los israelitas pasaran por su territorio. Más bien, reunió a sus tropas y salió a hacerles frente en el desierto. Cuando llegó a Yahaza, los atacó. 24Pero los israelitas lo derrotaron y se apoderaron de su territorio, desde el río Arnón hasta el río Jaboc, es decir, hasta la frontera de los amonitas, la cual estaba fortificada. 25Israel se apoderó de todas las ciudades amorreas y se estableció en ellas, incluso en Hesbón y en todas sus aldeas. 26Hesbón era la ciudad capital de Sijón, rey de los amorreos, quien había luchado en contra del anterior rey de Moab, conquistando todo su territorio, hasta el río Arnón.
27Por eso dicen los poetas:
«Vengan a Hesbón, la ciudad de Sijón.
¡Reconstrúyanla! ¡Restáurenla!
28»Porque de Hesbón ha salido fuego;
de la ciudad de Sijón salieron llamas.
¡Y consumieron a Ar de Moab
y los que habitan las alturas del Arnón!
29¡Ay de ti, Moab!
¡Estás destruido, pueblo de Quemós!
Tu dios convirtió a tus hijos en fugitivos
y a tus hijas en prisioneras de Sijón,
rey de los amorreos.
30»Los hemos destruido por completo,
desde Hesbón hasta Dibón.
Los devastamos hasta Nofa,
¡los destruimos hasta Medeba!».
31Así fue como Israel se estableció en la tierra de los amorreos.
Victoria sobre el rey Og de Basán
32Moisés también envió a explorar la ciudad de Jazer, y los israelitas se apoderaron de sus aldeas, expulsando a los amorreos que vivían allí. 33Al volver, tomaron el camino de Basán; entonces el rey Og, que gobernaba ese país, salió con su ejército para hacerles frente en Edrey.
34Pero el Señor dijo a Moisés: «No le tengas miedo, porque voy a entregar en tus manos a Og con su ejército y su territorio. Harás con él lo mismo que hiciste con Sijón, el rey de los amorreos que vivía en Hesbón».
35Así fue como los israelitas mataron a Og, a sus hijos y a todo su ejército, hasta no dejar sobreviviente, y se apoderaron de su territorio.
