1Jesus said to them, “What I’m about to tell you is true. Some who are standing here will not die before they see that God’s kingdom has come with power.”
Jesus’ Appearance Is Changed
2After six days Jesus took Peter, James and John with him. He led them up a high mountain. They were all alone. There in front of them his appearance was changed. 3His clothes became so white they shone. They were whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them. 4Elijah and Moses appeared in front of Jesus and his disciples. The two of them were talking with Jesus.
5Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters. One will be for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” 6Peter didn’t really know what to say, because they were so afraid.
7Then a cloud appeared and covered them. A voice came from the cloud. It said, “This is my Son, and I love him. Listen to him!”
8They looked around. Suddenly they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
9They came down the mountain. On the way down, Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone what they had seen. He told them to wait until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10So they kept the matter to themselves. But they asked each other what “rising from the dead” meant.
11Then they asked Jesus, “Why do the teachers of the law say that Elijah has to come first?”
12Jesus replied, “That’s right. Elijah does come first. He makes all things new again. So why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer much and not be accepted? 13I tell you, Elijah has come. They have done to him everything they wanted to do. They did it just as it is written about him.”
Jesus Heals a Boy Who Is Controlled by an Evil Spirit
14When Jesus and those who were with him came to the other disciples, they saw a large crowd around them. The teachers of the law were arguing with them. 15When all the people saw Jesus, they were filled with wonder. And they ran to greet him.
16“What are you arguing with them about?” Jesus asked.
17A man in the crowd answered. “Teacher,” he said, “I brought you my son. He is controlled by an evil spirit. Because of this, my son can’t speak anymore. 18When the spirit takes hold of him, it throws him to the ground. He foams at the mouth. He grinds his teeth. And his body becomes stiff. I asked your disciples to drive out the spirit. But they couldn’t do it.”
19“You unbelieving people!” Jesus replied. “How long do I have to stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you? Bring the boy to me.”
20So they brought him. As soon as the spirit saw Jesus, it threw the boy into a fit. He fell to the ground. He rolled around and foamed at the mouth.
21Jesus asked the boy’s father, “How long has he been like this?”
“Since he was a child,” he answered. 22“The spirit has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us. Please help us.”
23“ ‘If you can’?” said Jesus. “Everything is possible for the one who believes.”
24Right away the boy’s father cried out, “I do believe! Help me overcome my unbelief!”
25Jesus saw that a crowd was running over to see what was happening. Then he ordered the evil spirit to leave the boy. “You spirit that makes him unable to hear and speak!” he said. “I command you, come out of him. Never enter him again.”
26The spirit screamed. It shook the boy wildly. Then it came out of him. The boy looked so lifeless that many people said, “He’s dead.” 27But Jesus took him by the hand. He lifted the boy to his feet, and the boy stood up.
28Jesus went indoors. Then his disciples asked him in private, “Why couldn’t we drive out the evil spirit?”
29He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer.”
Jesus Speaks a Second Time About His Coming Death
30They left that place and passed through Galilee. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were. 31That was because he was teaching his disciples. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be handed over to men. They will kill him. After three days he will rise from the dead.” 32But they didn’t understand what he meant. And they were afraid to ask him about it.
Who Is the Most Important Person?
33Jesus and his disciples came to a house in Capernaum. There he asked them, “What were you arguing about on the road?” 34But they kept quiet. On the way, they had argued about which one of them was the most important person.
35Jesus sat down and called for the 12 disciples to come to him. Then he said, “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last. They must be the servant of everyone.”
36Jesus took a little child and had the child stand among them. Then he took the child in his arms. He said to them, 37“Anyone who welcomes one of these little children in my name welcomes me. And anyone who welcomes me also welcomes the one who sent me.”
Anyone Who Is Not Against Us Is for Us
38“Teacher,” said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name. We told him to stop, because he was not one of us.”
39“Do not stop him,” Jesus said. “For no one who does a miracle in my name can in the next moment say anything bad about me. 40Anyone who is not against us is for us. 41What I’m about to tell you is true. Suppose someone gives you a cup of water in my name because you belong to the Messiah. That person will certainly not go without a reward.
Leading People to Sin
42“What if someone leads one of these little ones who believe in me to sin? If they do, it would be better if a large millstone were hung around their neck and they were thrown into the sea. 43-44If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It would be better for you to enter God’s kingdom with only one hand than to go into hell with two hands. In hell the fire never goes out. 45-46If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It would be better to enter God’s kingdom with only one foot than to have two feet and be thrown into hell. 47If your eye causes you to sin, poke it out. It would be better for you to enter God’s kingdom with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell. 48In hell,
“ ‘The worms that eat them do not die.
The fire is not put out.’ (Isaiah 66:24)
49Everyone will be salted with fire.
50“Salt is good. But suppose it loses its saltiness. How can you make it salty again? Have salt among yourselves. And be at peace with each other.”
Gesù nella sua gloria
1Gesù continuava a dire ai suoi discepoli: «Alcuni di quelli che sono qui presenti ora non moriranno prima di avere visto il Regno di Dio arrivare con grande potenza!»
2Sei giorni dopo, Gesù prese con sé Pietro, Giacomo e Giovanni e li portò sulla cima di una montagna. Non cʼera nessuno con loro. Improvvisamente, davanti ai loro occhi, il viso di Gesù incominciò a splendere di gloria, 3i suoi abiti divennero di un bianco abbagliante, tanto splendente da non essere di questa terra. 4Ed ecco che apparvero Elia e Mosè che cominciarono a parlare con Gesù.
5«Maestro, è meraviglioso!» esclamò Pietro. «Faremo qui tre tende, una per ciascuno di voi tre…»
6Pietro diceva così tanto per parlare, perché non sapeva che cosa dire, infatti erano rimasti tutti spaventati.
7Poi venne una nuvola che li coprì, oscurando il sole, e una voce dalla nuvola disse: «Questo è il mio amato figlio. Ascoltatelo!»
8Ad un tratto, guardandosi intorno, i discepoli sʼaccorsero che Mosè ed Elia erano spariti, e con loro era rimasto soltanto Gesù.
9Mentre scendevano dalla montagna, Gesù disse loro di non far parola di ciò che avevano visto, finché non fosse risorto dalla morte. 10Così mantennero il segreto, ma spesso ne parlavano fra di loro, chiedendosi che cosa avesse inteso Gesù dicendo: «risorto dalla morte».
11Cominciarono quindi a fargli domande su un argomento di cui parlavano spesso i capi religiosi giudei, e cioè che Elia sarebbe ritornato (prima che venisse il Messia). 12-13Gesù era dʼaccordo che Elia dovesse tornare per primo a preparare la strada (per il Cristo), anzi, aggiunse che era già tornato. Non solo, ma era stato maltrattato, proprio come i profeti avevano predetto. Poi chiese loro: «Secondo voi che cosa intendevano i profeti quando predissero che il Messia avrebbe sofferto e sarebbe stato trattato con profondo disprezzo?»
Gesù sulla terra
14Quando giunsero ai piedi della montagna, trovarono unʼenorme folla stretta attorno agli altri nove discepoli, mentre alcuni capi giudei discutevano con loro. 15La gente guardò Gesù con una certa soggezione, mentre si avvicinava; ma poi corse a salutarlo. 16«Che succede?» chiese Gesù.
17Un uomo fra la folla si fece avanti e parlò: «Maestro, ho portato mio figlio, perché tu lo guarisca. Non può parlare, perché è posseduto da un demonio. 18Ogni volta che il demonio prende il sopravvento su di lui, lo getta a terra, e allora il ragazzo diventa rigido e digrigna i denti con la bava alla bocca. Ho chiesto ai tuoi discepoli di cacciare il demonio, ma non ci sono riusciti».
19Gesù disse (ai suoi discepoli): «Gente senza fede! Per quanto ancora dovrò aver pazienza con voi? Portatemi il ragazzo!»
20Glielo portarono; e quando il demonio vide Gesù, cominciò a scuotere convulsamente il ragazzo che cadde a terra sbavando e contorcendosi.
21«Da quanto tempo è in queste condizioni?» chiese Gesù al padre. «Fin da quando era molto piccolo», rispose lʼuomo. 22«Spesso il demonio lo fa cadere nel fuoco o nellʼacqua per ucciderlo. Oh, abbi pietà di noi e fa qualcosa, se puoi!»
23«Se posso?» disse Gesù. «Ma non sai che tutto è possibile per chi ha fede?»
24Subito il padre rispose: «Io ho fede, tu aiutami ad averne di più!»
25Quando Gesù vide che la folla aumentava, sgridò il demonio, dicendogli: «O demonio sordo e muto, ti ordino di uscire da questo ragazzo e di non tornare mai più!»
26Allora il demonio cacciò un urlo agghiacciante e di nuovo mise il ragazzo in convulsioni, poi, finalmente, lo lasciò. Il ragazzo rimase a terra afflosciato, immobile, apparentemente senza vita. Un mormorio corse tra la folla: «È morto!» 27Ma Gesù prese il ragazzo per la mano e lo aiutò a rialzarsi in piedi: era guarito! 28Più tardi, quando Gesù rimase solo in casa con i discepoli, essi chiesero: «Perché non siamo riusciti a cacciare quel demonio?»
29Gesù rispose: «Casi di questo genere richiedono molte preghiere».
30-31Lasciata quella regione, viaggiarono attraverso la Galilea, dove Gesù cercava di mantenere lʼincognito per poter passare più tempo ad insegnare ai discepoli. «Io, il Messia, sto per essere tradito e ucciso, ma dopo tre giorni risusciterò dai morti!» diceva loro.
32Ma i discepoli continuavano a non capire e non avevano il coraggio di chiedergli spiegazioni.
33E così arrivarono a Cafarnao. Quando furono sistemati nella casa dove dovevano soggiornare, Gesù chiese loro: «Di che cosa parlavate per strada?»
34Ma i discepoli si vergognavano di rispondere, perché stavano discutendo per sapere chi di loro fosse il più grande.
35Allora Gesù si sedette, li riunì tutti e dodici intorno a sé e disse loro: «Chi vuole essere il più grande deve essere lʼultimo, il servo di tutti!»
36Poi mise fra loro un bimbetto di pochi anni e, prendendolo in braccio, aggiunse: 37«Chi accoglierà nel mio nome un piccino come questo, accoglierà me. E chi accoglie me, accoglie mio Padre che mi ha mandato».
38Uno dei discepoli, Giovanni, gli disse: «Maestro, abbiamo visto un uomo che cacciava i demòni in nome tuo e noi gli abbiamo detto di non farlo, perché non appartiene al nostro gruppo». 39Ma Gesù rispose: «Lasciatelo fare. Perché nessuno può fare miracoli nel mio nome e subito dopo levarsi contro di me. 40Chi non è contro di noi, è per noi! 41Chiunque vi darà anche soltanto un bicchiere dʼacqua, perché appartenete a Cristo, vi assicuro che non perderà la sua ricompensa! 42Ma se qualcuno col proprio comportamento ostacolerà la fede di uno di questi piccini che credono in me, sarebbe meglio per lui che gli fosse legata al collo una macina da mulino e fosse buttato in mare!
43-44Se la tua mano compie il male, tagliala. Meglio entrare nella vita con una mano sola, che essere buttato con tutte e due nel fuoco inestinguibile dellʼinferno. 45-46Se il tuo piede ti porta al male, taglialo. Meglio essere zoppo e vivere per sempre, che essere gettato allʼinferno con due piedi.
47E se il tuo occhio ti fa peccare, cavalo. Meglio entrare guercio nel Regno di Dio che avere due occhi e vedere il fuoco dellʼinferno, 48“dove il verme non muore mai e il fuoco non si spegne, 49dove lʼunico condimento è il fuoco”.9,49 cfr. Isaia 66,24
50Il sale è buono, ma se diventa insipido come potete ridargli sapore? Perciò, abbiate sale in voi stessi, non perdete il vostro sapore! E vivete in pace gli uni con gli altri».
