Jesus Feeds the Four Thousand
1During those days another large crowd gathered. They had nothing to eat. So Jesus called for his disciples to come to him. He said, 2“I feel deep concern for these people. They have already been with me three days. They don’t have anything to eat. 3If I send them away hungry, they will become too weak on their way home. Some of them have come from far away.”
4His disciples answered him. “There is nothing here,” they said. “Where can anyone get enough bread to feed them?”
5“How many loaves do you have?” Jesus asked.
“Seven,” they replied.
6He told the crowd to sit down on the ground. He took the seven loaves and gave thanks to God. Then he broke them and gave them to his disciples. They passed the pieces of bread around to the people. 7The disciples also had a few small fish. Jesus gave thanks for them too. He told the disciples to pass them around. 8The people ate and were satisfied. After that, the disciples picked up seven baskets of leftover pieces. 9About 4,000 people were there. After Jesus sent them away, 10he got into a boat with his disciples. He went to the area of Dalmanutha.
11The Pharisees came and began to ask Jesus questions. They wanted to test him. So they asked him for a sign from heaven. 12He sighed deeply. He said, “Why do you people ask for a sign? What I’m about to tell you is true. No sign will be given to you.” 13Then he left them. He got back into the boat and crossed to the other side of the lake.
The Yeast of the Pharisees and Herod
14The disciples had forgotten to bring bread. They had only one loaf with them in the boat. 15“Be careful,” Jesus warned them. “Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees. And watch out for the yeast of Herod.”
16They talked about this with each other. They said, “He must be saying this because we don’t have any bread.”
17Jesus knew what they were saying. So he asked them, “Why are you talking about having no bread? Why can’t you see or understand? Are you stubborn? 18Do you have eyes and still don’t see? Do you have ears and still don’t hear? And don’t you remember? 19Earlier I broke five loaves for the 5,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?”
“Twelve,” they replied.
20“Later I broke seven loaves for the 4,000. How many baskets of pieces did you pick up?”
“Seven,” they answered.
21He said to them, “Can’t you understand yet?”
Jesus Heals a Blind Man at Bethsaida
22Jesus and his disciples came to Bethsaida. Some people brought a blind man to him. They begged Jesus to touch him. 23He took the blind man by the hand. Then he led him outside the village. He spit on the man’s eyes and placed his hands on him. “Do you see anything?” Jesus asked.
24The man looked up. He said, “I see people. They look like trees walking around.”
25Once more Jesus put his hands on the man’s eyes. Then his eyes were opened so that he could see again. He saw everything clearly. 26Jesus sent him home. He told him, “Don’t even go into the village.”
Peter Says That Jesus Is the Messiah
27Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, “Who do people say I am?”
28They replied, “Some say John the Baptist. Others say Elijah. Still others say one of the prophets.”
29“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”
Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
30Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him.
Jesus Tells About His Coming Death
31Jesus then began to teach his disciples. He taught them that the Son of Man must suffer many things. He taught them that the elders would not accept him. The chief priests and the teachers of the law would not accept him either. He must be killed and after three days rise again. 32He spoke clearly about this. Peter took Jesus to one side and began to scold him.
33Jesus turned and looked at his disciples. He scolded Peter. “Get behind me, Satan!” he said. “You are not thinking about the things God cares about. Instead, you are thinking only about the things humans care about.”
You Must Pick Up Your Cross
34Jesus called the crowd to him along with his disciples. He said, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must say no to themselves. They must pick up their cross and follow me. 35Whoever wants to save their life will lose it. But whoever loses their life for me and for the good news will save it. 36What good is it if someone gains the whole world but loses their soul? 37Or what can anyone trade for their soul? 38Suppose anyone is ashamed of me and my words among these adulterous and sinful people. Then the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.”
A Segunda Multiplicação dos Pães
(Mt 15.29-39)
1Naqueles dias, outra vez reuniu-se uma grande multidão. Visto que não tinham nada para comer, Jesus chamou os seus discípulos e disse-lhes: 2“Tenho compaixão desta multidão; já faz três dias que eles estão comigo e nada têm para comer. 3Se eu os mandar para casa com fome, vão desfalecer no caminho, porque alguns deles vieram de longe”.
4Os seus discípulos responderam: “Onde, neste lugar deserto, poderia alguém conseguir pão suficiente para alimentá-los?”
5“Quantos pães vocês têm?”, perguntou Jesus.
“Sete”, responderam eles.
6Ele ordenou à multidão que se assentasse no chão. Depois de tomar os sete pães e dar graças, partiu-os e os entregou aos seus discípulos, para que os servissem à multidão; e eles o fizeram. 7Tinham também alguns peixes pequenos; ele deu graças igualmente por eles e disse aos discípulos que os distribuíssem. 8O povo comeu até se fartar. E ajuntaram sete cestos cheios de pedaços que sobraram. 9Cerca de quatro mil homens estavam presentes. E, tendo-os despedido, 10entrou no barco com seus discípulos e foi para a região de Dalmanuta.
Os Fariseus Pedem um Sinal
(Mt 16.1-4)
11Os fariseus vieram e começaram a interrogar Jesus. Para pô-lo à prova, pediram-lhe um sinal do céu. 12Ele suspirou profundamente e disse: “Por que esta geração pede um sinal milagroso? Eu afirmo que nenhum sinal será dado a vocês”. 13Então se afastou deles, voltou para o barco e foi para o outro lado.
O Fermento dos Fariseus e de Herodes
(Mt 16.5-12)
14Os discípulos haviam se esquecido de levar pão, a não ser um pão que tinham consigo no barco. 15Advertiu-os Jesus: “Estejam atentos e tenham cuidado com o fermento dos fariseus e com o fermento de Herodes”.
16E eles discutiam entre si, dizendo: “É porque não temos pão”.
17Percebendo a discussão, Jesus lhes perguntou: “Por que vocês estão discutindo sobre não terem pão? Ainda não compreendem nem percebem? O coração de vocês está endurecido? 18Vocês têm olhos, mas não veem? Têm ouvidos, mas não ouvem? Não se lembram? 19Quando eu parti os cinco pães para os cinco mil, quantos cestos cheios de pedaços vocês recolheram?”
“Doze”, responderam eles.
20“E, quando eu parti os sete pães para os quatro mil, quantos cestos cheios de pedaços vocês recolheram?”
“Sete”, responderam eles.
21Ele lhes disse: “Vocês ainda não entendem?”
A Cura de um Cego em Betsaida
22Eles foram para Betsaida, e algumas pessoas trouxeram um cego a Jesus, suplicando-lhe que tocasse nele. 23Ele tomou o cego pela mão e o levou para fora do povoado. Depois de cuspir nos olhos do homem e impor-lhe as mãos, Jesus perguntou: “Você está vendo alguma coisa?”
24Ele levantou os olhos e disse: “Vejo pessoas; elas parecem árvores andando”.
25Mais uma vez, Jesus colocou as mãos sobre os olhos do homem. Então seus olhos foram abertos, e sua vista lhe foi restaurada, e ele via tudo claramente. 26Jesus mandou-o para casa, dizendo: “Não entre no povoado8.26 Vários manuscritos acrescentam nem conte nada a ninguém no povoado.!”
A Confissão de Pedro
(Mt 16.13-20; Lc 9.18-21)
27Jesus e os seus discípulos dirigiram-se para os povoados nas proximidades de Cesareia de Filipe. No caminho, ele lhes perguntou: “Quem o povo diz que eu sou?”
28Eles responderam: “Alguns dizem que és João Batista; outros, Elias; e, ainda outros, um dos profetas”.
29“E vocês?”, perguntou ele. “Quem vocês dizem que eu sou?”
Pedro respondeu: “Tu és o Cristo8.29 Ou Messias. Tanto Cristo (grego) como Messias (hebraico) significam Ungido; também em todo o livro de Marcos.”.
30Jesus os advertiu que não falassem a ninguém a seu respeito.
Jesus Prediz sua Morte e Ressurreição
(Mt 16.21-28; Lc 9.22-27)
31Então ele começou a ensinar-lhes que era necessário que o Filho do homem sofresse muitas coisas e fosse rejeitado pelos líderes religiosos, pelos chefes dos sacerdotes e pelos mestres da lei, fosse morto e três dias depois ressuscitasse. 32Ele falou claramente a esse respeito. Então Pedro, chamando-o à parte, começou a repreendê-lo.
33Jesus, porém, voltou-se, olhou para os seus discípulos e repreendeu Pedro, dizendo: “Para trás de mim, Satanás! Você não pensa nas coisas de Deus, mas nas dos homens”.
34Então ele chamou a multidão e os discípulos e disse: “Se alguém quiser acompanhar-me, negue-se a si mesmo, tome a sua cruz e siga-me. 35Pois quem quiser salvar a sua vida8.35 Ou alma a perderá; mas quem perder a sua vida por minha causa e pelo evangelho a salvará. 36Pois, que adianta ao homem ganhar o mundo inteiro e perder a sua alma? 37Ou, o que o homem poderia dar em troca de sua alma? 38Se alguém se envergonhar de mim e das minhas palavras nesta geração adúltera e pecadora, o Filho do homem se envergonhará dele quando vier na glória de seu Pai com os santos anjos”.
