The Lord Kills Nadab and Abihu
1Nadab and Abihu were two of Aaron’s sons. They got their shallow cups for burning incense. They put fire in them. They added incense to it. They made an offering to the Lord by using fire that wasn’t allowed. They did it against his command. 2So the Lord sent fire on them. It burned them up. They died in front of the Lord. 3Then Moses spoke to Aaron. He said, “That’s what the Lord was talking about when he said,
“ ‘Among those who approach me
I will show that I am holy.
In the sight of all the people
I will be honored.’ ”
So Aaron remained silent.
4Moses sent for Mishael and Elzaphan. They were sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel. Moses said to them, “Come here. Carry the bodies of your cousins outside the camp. Take them away from in front of the Holy Room.” 5So they came and carried them outside the camp. It was just as Moses had ordered. The bodies of Nadab and Abihu still had their inner robes on them.
6Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar. They were Aaron’s sons. Moses said, “Don’t let your hair hang loose. Don’t tear your clothes. If you do, you will die. And the Lord will be angry with the whole community. But all the Israelites are allowed to show they are sad. They are your relatives. They may mourn for those the Lord has destroyed with fire. 7Don’t leave the entrance to the tent of meeting. If you do, you will die. That’s because the Lord’s anointing oil has made you holy.” So they did what Moses told them to do.
8Then the Lord spoke to Aaron. He said, 9“You and your sons will go into the tent of meeting. When you do, you must not drink any kind of wine. If you do, you will die. This is a law that will last for all time to come. 10This is so that you can tell the difference between what is holy and what is not. You must be able to tell the difference between what is ‘clean’ and what is not. 11Then you will be able to teach the Israelites all the rules I have given them through Moses.”
12Moses spoke to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar. They were Aaron’s two remaining sons. Moses said, “Take the grain offering left over from the food offerings presented to the Lord. It is very holy. Make bread without yeast from it. Eat it beside the altar. 13Eat it in the holy area. It’s your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord. These rules are in keeping with the command the Lord gave me. 14But you and your sons and your daughters can eat the breast that was waved. You can also eat the thigh that was offered. Eat them in a ‘clean’ place. They have been given to you and your children. They are your share of the friendship offerings the Israelites bring. 15The thigh that was offered must be brought together with the fat parts of the food offerings. The breast that was waved must be brought in the same way. All of it must be lifted up and waved in front of the Lord as a wave offering. It will be the share for you and your children for all time to come. That’s what the Lord has commanded.”
16Moses asked about the goat that was brought as the sin offering. He found out that it had been burned up. So he became angry with Eleazar and Ithamar. They were Aaron’s two remaining sons. Moses asked them, 17“Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in a place near the Holy Room? The offering is very holy. It was given to you to take the people’s guilt away. It paid for their sin in the sight of the Lord. 18The blood of the offering wasn’t taken into the Holy Room. So you should have eaten the goat in a place near the Holy Room. That’s what I commanded.”
19Aaron replied to Moses, “Today the people sacrificed their sin offering to the Lord. They also sacrificed their burnt offerings to him. But a terrible thing has happened to me. Two of my sons have died. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?” 20When Moses heard that, he was satisfied.
A morte de Nadabe e Abiú
1Nadabe e Abiú, filhos de Aarão, tomaram cada um o seu incensário, puseram-lhe fogo e incenso sobre ele, trazendo fogo estranho perante o Senhor, contrariamente àquilo que o ele expressamente ordenara. 2Então saiu fogo da presença do Senhor que os consumiu.
3Moisés disse a Aarão: “Foi isto mesmo que o Senhor disse:
‘Darei prova da minha santidade,
através daqueles que se aproximam de mim,
e serei glorificado assim perante todo o povo.’ ”
Porém, Aarão guardou silêncio.
4Moisés chamou então Misael e Elzafã, primos de Aarão, filhos de Uziel, e disse-lhes: “Vão buscar os corpos que estão diante do santuário e levem-nos para fora do acampamento.” 5E assim fizeram e levaram-nos, mesmo nas túnicas com que estavam, tal como Moisés lhes dissera.
6Então Moisés disse a Aarão e aos seus filhos Eleazar e Itamar: “Não descubram as vossas cabeças, em sinal de contrição, nem rasguem as vossas roupas, para que não venham a morrer também, e a ira do Senhor não venha a este povo de Israel. No entanto, o resto do povo pode lamentar todo este terrível fogo que o Senhor mandou. 7Vocês, contudo, não devem afastar-se da tenda do encontro, sob pena de morrer, pois o azeite da unção do Senhor está sobre vós.” Eles assim fizeram como Moisés lhes disse.
8O Senhor disse mais o seguinte a Aarão: 9“Não bebam nunca vinho nem bebida forte quando entrarem na tenda do encontro, se não morrerão. Esta regra aplicar-se-á a vocês e a todos os vossos descendentes, em todas as gerações vindouras. 10O vosso dever é ensinar o povo, mostrar-lhe qual a diferença entre o santo e o profano, o puro e o impuro; 11ensinar-lhe todas as leis que o Senhor tem dado por intermédio de Moisés.”
12Moisés disse a Aarão e aos filhos que lhe ficaram, Eleazar e Itamar: “Tomem a oferta de cereais, o que ficou depois de ter oferecido ao Senhor aquela mão-cheia que foi queimada sobre o altar, certifiquem-se que não há nela fermento e comam-na junto do altar, num lugar sagrado; trata-se de uma oferta santíssima. 13Por isso, devem comê-la num lugar santo. É uma porção que vos pertence a ti e a teus filhos, essa parte das ofertas ao Senhor feitas com fogo. Assim me foi ordenado. 14Mas o peito e a coxa, que foram oferecidas ao Senhor com um movimento balanceado, um gesto de apresentação cerimonial, na sua presença, podem comer num lugar limpo cerimonialmente. É um alimento que vos é destinado; a ti, aos teus filhos e filhas. É a porção que vos pertence dos sacrifícios de paz que faz o povo de Israel. 15O povo deverá trazer a coxa, que foi posta de parte, mais o peito que foi oferecido quando a gordura se queimava, e deverão apresentá-los ao Senhor com um gesto de apresentação cerimonial. Depois então vos pertencerão, a ti e à tua família, tal como o Senhor tem ordenado.”
16Moisés procurou por toda a parte o bode da oferta pelo pecado e descobriu que tinha sido queimado. Por isso, ficou muito zangado com Eleazar e com Itamar, os filhos que restaram a Aarão. 17“Porque não comeram vocês a oferta pelo pecado no santuário, visto que é coisa santíssima? Deus vo-la deu para que levassem a iniquidade e a culpa do povo, para fazer expiação por eles perante o Senhor!”, disse-lhes. 18“Visto que o sangue não foi levado para dentro do santuário, deveriam tê-la comido ali tal como vos mandei.”
19Aarão intercedeu junto de Moisés: “Eles ofereceram a sua oferta de expiação do pecado e o seu holocausto perante o Senhor”, disse. “Poderia eu comer a expiação pelo pecado num dia como este? Teria isso agradado ao Senhor?”
20Moisés, ouvindo isto, ficou de acordo.
