The Place Where Wisdom Is Found Is Explained
1There are mines where silver is found.
There are places where gold is purified.
2Iron is taken out of the earth.
Copper is melted down from ore.
3Human beings light up the darkness.
They search for ore in the deepest pits.
They look for it in the blackest darkness.
4Far from where people live they cut a tunnel.
They do it in places where other people don’t go.
Far away from people they swing back and forth on ropes.
5Food grows on the surface of the earth.
But far below, the earth is changed as if by fire.
6Lapis lazuli is taken from the rocky earth.
Its dust contains nuggets of gold.
7No bird knows that hidden path.
No falcon’s eye has seen it.
8Proud animals don’t walk on it.
Lions don’t prowl there.
9Human hands attack the hardest rock.
Their strong hands uncover the base of the mountains.
10They tunnel through the rock.
Their eyes see all its treasures.
11They search the places where the rivers begin.
They bring hidden things out into the light.
12But where can wisdom be found?
Where does understanding live?
13No human being understands how much it’s worth.
It can’t be found anywhere in the world.
14The ocean says, “It’s not in me.”
The sea says, “It’s not here either.”
15It can’t be bought with the finest gold.
Its price can’t be weighed out in silver.
16It can’t be bought with gold from Ophir.
It can’t be bought with priceless onyx or lapis lazuli.
17Gold or crystal can’t compare with it.
It can’t be bought with jewels made of gold.
18Don’t bother to talk about coral and jasper.
Wisdom is worth far more than rubies.
19A topaz from Cush can’t compare with it.
It can’t be bought with the purest gold.
20So where does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding live?
21It’s hidden from the eyes of every living thing.
Even the birds in the sky can’t find it.
22Death and the Grave say,
“Only reports about it have reached our ears.”
23But God understands the way to it.
He is the only one who knows where it lives.
24He sees from one end of the earth to the other.
He views everything in the world.
25He made the mighty wind.
He measured out the waters.
26He gave orders for the rain to fall.
He made paths for the thunderstorms.
27Then he looked at wisdom and set its price.
He established it and tested it.
28He said to human beings,
“Have respect for the Lord. That will prove you are wise.
Avoid evil. That will show you have understanding.”
Onde se encontrará a sabedoria?
1Os homens sabem onde encontrar a prata nas minas
e como refinar o ouro.
2Conhecem a forma de extrair da terra o ferro
e de tirar o cobre das rochas.
3Eles sabem como iluminar a escuridão,
de forma a perfurar uma mina, no interior da Terra,
explorando os seus recantos mais profundos.
4Penetram no seu interior rochoso,
onde reinam trevas sinistras, descendo com cordas,
balançando dum lado para o outro.
5Os homens sabem, igualmente,
como tirar alimento da superfície da Terra,
enquanto no seu interior arde fogo.
6Conhecem a forma de encontrar safiras e pepitas de ouro;
7tesouros que não há ave de rapina que possa descobrir,
nem olho do falcão que destrince,
pois estão no fundo das minas.
8Não são coisas que os animais altivos pisem nos campos;
o leão nunca lhes pôs a pata em cima.
9Os homens são capazes de rebentar duras pedreiras
e de revolver as raízes dos montes.
10Abrem túneis no meio de rochedos
e deixam a descoberto pedras preciosas.
11Prendem as correntes de águas com barragens;
trazem à luz o que estava escondido.
12Mas onde se encontrará a sabedoria?
Onde habita o entendimento?
13Não sabem como obter tais coisas;
o facto é que não se encontram entre os seres vivos.
14‘Não está aqui!’, dizem os oceanos.
‘Nem aqui!’, respondem os mares.
15Não podem ser adquiridas com ouro ou prata,
16ainda que fosse com todo o ouro de Ofir,
ou com pedras preciosas de ónix ou safira.
17A sabedoria é algo muito mais precioso que ouro ou cristal;
não pode ser comprada com ricas joias de ouro,
cravejadas de pedras preciosas.
18O coral e o cristal perdem o seu brilho e valor ao lado dela;
o seu preço é bem acima dos rubis.
19Topázios de Cuche não chegam para comprá-la,
nem sequer todo o ouro, do mais puro.
20Mas, então, onde é que podemos obtê-la?
Onde é que a podemos achar?
21Está escondida dos olhos de toda a humanidade;
nem a vista penetrante de certas aves consegue descobri-la.
22No entanto, a destruição e a morte dizem:
‘Só conhecemos de ouvir!’
23Deus, claro está, sabe onde é que ela se pode achar,
24pois estende a sua vista através da Terra inteira,
duma à outra extremidade dos céus.
25Faz soprar os ventos e põe limites aos oceanos.
26Estabeleceu leis para as chuvas
e para o desencadear dos relâmpagos.
27Sim, ele sabe onde se encontra a sabedoria
e di-lo a todos os que estiverem dispostos a escutar;
foi ele quem a estabeleceu e a examinou detalhadamente.
28É isto aquilo que ele diz a toda a humanidade:
‘Escutem! O temor o Senhor é isso, a genuína sabedoria!
A verdadeira inteligência está no afastar-se do mal!’ ”
