Times of Trouble Are Coming
1A message from the Lord came to me. He said, 2“Jeremiah, you must not get married. You must not have any sons or daughters in this land.” 3Here is the Lord’s message about the children born in this place. He says about them and their parents, 4“Some of them will die of deadly sicknesses. No one will mourn for them. Their bodies will not be buried. Instead, they will be like human waste lying there on the ground. Others will die because of war and hunger. Their bodies will not be buried. Instead, they will become food for the birds and the wild animals.”
5The Lord says, “Jeremiah, suppose a meal is being served because someone has died. Do not enter any house where that is happening. Do not go there to mourn or to comfort the family. I will not bless these people anymore. I have taken my love and pity away from them,” announces the Lord. 6“Important and unimportant people alike will die in this land. Their bodies will not be buried. No one will mourn for them. No one will cut themselves or shave their head for the dead. 7No one will offer food or drink to comfort those who mourn for the dead. No one will do this even if someone’s father or mother has died.
8“Do not enter a house where a feast is being held. Do not sit down there to eat and drink. 9I am the Lord who rules over all. I am the God of Israel. I am telling you, ‘In your days I will judge your people. You will see it with your own eyes. I will put an end to the sounds of joy and gladness here in Jerusalem. The voices of brides and grooms will not be heard anymore.’
10“Tell these people all these things. They will ask you, ‘Why has the Lord decided to send so much trouble on us? We haven’t done anything wrong. We haven’t committed any sins against the Lord our God.’ 11When they say this, here is what you should tell them. ‘I did it because your people of long ago deserted me,’ announces the Lord. ‘They followed other gods. They served them and worshiped them. They deserted me. They did not obey my law. 12But you have done more evil things than they did. All of you are doing what your stubborn and evil hearts want you to do. You are not obeying me. 13So I will throw you out of this land. I will send you away to another land. Neither you nor your people of long ago have known about it. There you will serve other gods day and night. And I will not give you any help.’
14“But a new day is coming,” announces the Lord. “At that time here is what people will no longer say. ‘As sure as he is alive, the Lord brought the Israelites up out of Egypt.’ 15Instead, they will say, ‘The Lord brought the Israelites up out of the land of the north. He gathered them out of all the countries where he had forced them to go. And that’s just as sure as he is alive.’ I will bring them back to the land I gave their people of long ago.
16“But now I will send for many fishermen,” announces the Lord. “They will catch some of these people. After that, I will send for many hunters. They will hunt down the others on every mountain and hill. They will bring them out of the cracks in the rocks. 17My eyes see everything these people do. What they do is not hidden from me. I always see their sin. 18I will pay them back double for their sin and the evil things they have done. They have made my land ‘unclean.’ They have set up lifeless statues of their evil gods. They have filled my land with them. I hate those gods.”
19Lord, you give me strength.
You are like a fort to me.
When I’m in trouble,
I go to you for safety.
The nations will come to you
from one end of the earth to the other.
They will gather together and say,
“Our people of long ago didn’t own anything
except statues of gods.
The statues were worthless.
They didn’t do them any good.
20Do human beings really make their own gods?
Yes. But they aren’t really gods at all!”
21The Lord says, “So I will teach them about myself.
This time I will show them
how powerful and mighty I am.
Then they will know
that I am the Lord.
La solitude du prophète
1L’Eternel m’adressa la parole : 2Tu ne te marieras pas, tu n’auras donc ni fils ni filles en ce lieu, 3car voici ce que déclare l’Eternel au sujet des fils et des filles qui naissent en ce lieu et au sujet des mères qui les mettent au monde, et au sujet des pères qui les engendrent ici, dans ce pays : 4Des maladies mortelles les feront périr. Nul ne mènera deuil sur eux et on ne les mettra pas au tombeau. Leurs corps resteront étendus comme du fumier sur le sol. L’épée ou la famine les consumeront et leurs cadavres seront dévorés par les rapaces et les bêtes sauvages.
5Car voici ce que déclare l’Eternel : Tu ne dois pas entrer dans une maison endeuillée ; ne va pas à des funérailles, n’aie pour ces gens aucun geste de sympathie, car j’ai retiré à ce peuple ma paix, ma bonté et ma compassion, l’Eternel le déclare. 6Les grands et les petits mourront dans ce pays ; ils ne seront pas enterrés, nul ne mènera deuil sur eux, on ne se fera pas des incisions pour eux16.6 Coutume païenne interdite par la Loi (Lv 19.28 ; 21.5 ; Dt 14.1) mais adoptée par les Israélites., nul ne se rasera la tête pour eux. 7Personne ne fera de repas funéraire pour ceux qui sont en deuil, pour les réconforter du décès d’un des leurs. Nul ne leur offrira la coupe de consolation au sujet du décès d’un père ou d’une mère.
8Tu n’iras pas non plus dans la maison où l’on festoie pour t’asseoir avec eux, pour manger et pour boire. 9Car voici ce que dit le Seigneur des armées célestes, Dieu d’Israël : Je vais faire cesser en ce lieu, sous vos yeux et durant votre temps, les cris de réjouissance et d’allégresse, la voix du marié et de la mariée.
10Or, quand tu communiqueras ce message à ce peuple, ils te demanderont : « Pourquoi donc l’Eternel parle-t-il de nous envoyer ce grand malheur ? Quel mal avons-nous fait ? Quel péché avons-nous commis contre l’Eternel notre Dieu ? » 11Alors, tu leur diras : Vos pères m’ont abandonné, l’Eternel le déclare, ils se sont attachés à d’autres dieux, ils leur ont rendu un culte, et ils se sont prosternés devant eux. Ils m’ont abandonné et n’ont pas appliqué ma Loi. 12Et vous, vous avez fait pis encore que vos pères, chacun de vous suit les penchants de son cœur obstiné et mauvais, sans m’écouter. 13Je vous jetterai donc hors de ce pays-ci jusqu’en un pays inconnu de vous et de vos pères. Là, jour et nuit, vous adorerez d’autres dieux, car je n’aurai plus pitié de vous.
Lueur d’espoir
14C’est pourquoi, des jours viennent – l’Eternel le déclare – où l’on ne dira plus : « L’Eternel est vivant, lui qui a fait sortir d’Egypte les Israélites16.14 Pour les v. 14-15, voir 23.7-8. » ; 15mais l’on dira plutôt : « L’Eternel est vivant, lui qui a fait sortir les Israélites du pays du nord et de tous les pays où il les avait chassés. » Je les ramènerai dans leur pays que j’ai donné à leurs ancêtres.
16Oui, je vais envoyer des pêcheurs en grand nombre, et ils les pêcheront, déclare l’Eternel, et j’enverrai des chasseurs en grand nombre, et ils les chasseront sur toutes les montagnes, sur toutes les collines et dans les fentes des rochers. 17J’observe toutes leurs démarches, aucune ne m’échappe, et leur crime ne peut se dérober à mon regard. 18Je leur paierai d’abord16.18 C’est-à-dire avant la délivrance promise au v. 14. au double le salaire que méritent leur iniquité et leurs péchés, car ils ont profané mon pays avec leurs idoles qui n’ont pas plus de vie que des cadavres, et ils ont rempli mon domaine de leurs horreurs abominables.
Les peuples non israélites se tournent vers l’Eternel
19Eternel, toi ma force, ╵mon rempart,
toi, mon refuge, ╵au temps de la détresse,
les peuples étrangers ╵viendront à toi
des confins de la terre
en proclamant :
« Nos pères n’ont eu en partage ╵que des idoles mensongères,
des divinités inutiles ╵qui ne servent à rien.
20Un homme pourrait-il ╵se fabriquer des dieux ?
Ce ne sont pas des dieux ! »
21C’est pourquoi, je vais leur faire connaître,
oui, cette fois,
je leur ferai connaître ╵comment j’agis avec puissance,
et ils sauront alors ╵que je suis l’Eternel.
