Messengers Come From Babylon to Hezekiah
1At that time Marduk-Baladan, the king of Babylon, sent Hezekiah letters and a gift. He had heard that Hezekiah had been sick but had gotten well again. Marduk-Baladan was the son of Baladan. 2Hezekiah gladly received the messengers. He showed them what was in his storerooms. He showed them the silver and gold. He took them to where the spices and the fine olive oil were kept. He showed them where he kept all his weapons. And he showed them all his treasures. In fact, he showed them everything that was in his palace and in his whole kingdom.
3Then Isaiah the prophet went to King Hezekiah. Isaiah asked him, “What did those men say? Where did they come from?”
“They came from a land far away,” Hezekiah said. “They came to me from Babylon.”
4Isaiah asked, “What did they see in your palace?”
“They saw everything in my palace,” Hezekiah said. “I showed them all my treasures.”
5Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah, “Listen to the message of the Lord who rules over all. He says, 6‘You can be sure the time will come when everything in your palace will be carried off to Babylon. Everything the kings before you have stored up until this day will be taken away. There will not be anything left,’ says the Lord. 7‘Some of the members of your family line will be taken away. They will be your own flesh and blood. They will include the children who will be born into your family line. And they will serve the king of Babylon in his palace.’ ”
8“The message the Lord has spoken through you is good,” Hezekiah replied. He thought, “There will be peace and safety while I’m still living.”

1În acea perioadă, Merodak-Baladan, fiul lui Baladan, rege al Babilonului1 Rege al Babilonului (721–710 î.Cr.; 703–702 î.Cr.); în 705 î.Cr. profită de moartea lui Sargon II (721–705 î.Cr.), și caută să încheie alianțe militare prin care să‑și recâștige tronul., i‑a trimis lui Ezechia scrisori și un dar, fiindcă auzise că acesta fusese bolnav și se însănătoșise. 2Ezechia s‑a bucurat de ei și le‑a arătat ceea ce era în vistieria sa: argintul, aurul, mirodeniile, uleiul cel scump, tot armamentul lui și tot ce se afla în magaziile lui. Nu a rămas nimic în palatul sau în regatul său pe care Ezechia să nu li‑l fi arătat.
3Atunci profetul Isaia a venit la regele Ezechia și l‑a întrebat:
– Ce au zis oamenii aceia și de unde au venit?
Ezechia i‑a răspuns:
– Au venit dintr‑o țară îndepărtată, din Babilon.
4Profetul l‑a întrebat:
– Ce‑au văzut în palatul tău?
Ezechia a răspuns:
– Au văzut tot ceea ce este în palatul meu și n‑a rămas nimic în magaziile mele pe care să nu li‑l fi arătat.
5Atunci Isaia i‑a zis lui Ezechia:
– Ascultă Cuvântul Domnului Oștirilor: 6„Iată, vin zile când tot ce este în palatul tău și tot ce au agonisit părinții tăi până în ziua aceasta, va fi dus în Babilon. Nu va mai fi lăsat nimic, zice Domnul. 7Unii dintre propriii tăi fii, care ți s‑au născut, îți vor fi luați și vor fi făcuți eunuci în palatul împăratului Babilonului.“
8Ezechia i‑a zis lui Isaia:
– Cuvântul Domnului pe care l‑ai rostit este bun.
„Căci“, se gândea8 Sau: spunea. el, „măcar în timpul vieții mele va fi pace și siguranță.“
