Judah and Tamar
1At that time, Judah left his brothers. He went down to stay with a man named Hirah from the town of Adullam. 2There Judah met the daughter of a man from Canaan. His name was Shua. Judah married her and slept with her. 3She became pregnant and had a son. They named him Er. 4She became pregnant again and had another son. She named him Onan. 5She had still another son. She named him Shelah. He was born at Kezib.
6Judah got a wife for his oldest son Er. Her name was Tamar. 7But Judah’s oldest son Er was evil in the Lord’s eyes. So the Lord put him to death.
8Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife. After all, you are her brother-in-law. So carry out your duty to her. Provide children for your brother.” 9But Onan knew that the children wouldn’t belong to him. So every time he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground. He did it so he wouldn’t provide children for his brother. 10What he did was evil in the Lord’s eyes. So the Lord put him to death also.
11Then Judah spoke to his daughter-in-law Tamar. He said, “Live as a widow in your father’s home. Wait there until my son Shelah grows up.” Judah was thinking, “Shelah might die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s home.
12After a long time Judah’s wife died. She was the daughter of Shua. When Judah got over his sadness, he went up to Timnah. His friend Hirah from Adullam went with him. Men were clipping the wool from Judah’s sheep at Timnah.
13Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to clip the wool from his sheep.” 14So she took off her widow’s clothes. She covered her face with a veil so people wouldn’t know who she was. Then she sat down at the entrance to Enaim. Enaim is on the road to Timnah. Tamar knew that Shelah had grown up. But she hadn’t been given to him as his wife.
15Judah saw her. He thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face with a veil. 16He didn’t realize that she was his daughter-in-law. He went over to her by the side of the road. He said, “Come. Let me sleep with you.”
“What will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.
17“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.
“Will you give me something that belongs to you?” she asked. “I’ll keep it until you send the goat.”
18He said, “What should I give you?”
“Give me your official seal and the string that it hangs from,” she answered. “And give me your walking stick.” So he gave them to her. Then he slept with her. And she became pregnant by him. 19After she left, she took off her veil. She put on her widow’s clothes again.
20Judah sent his friend Hirah with the young goat he had promised. He wanted to get back what he had given to the woman. But his friend Hirah couldn’t find her. 21He asked the men who lived at Enaim, “Where’s the temple prostitute? She used to sit beside the road here.”
“There hasn’t been any temple prostitute here,” they said.
22So Hirah went back to Judah. He said, “I couldn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there didn’t know anything about her. They said, ‘There hasn’t been any temple prostitute here.’ ”
23Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has. I don’t want people making fun of us. After all, I did send her this young goat. We can’t help it if you couldn’t find her.”
24About three months later people brought word to Judah. They said, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of being a prostitute. Now she’s pregnant.”
Judah said, “Bring her out! Have her burned to death!”
25As Tamar was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. She said, “I am pregnant by the man who owns these.” She continued, “Do you recognize this seal and string and walking stick? Do you know who they belong to?”
26Judah recognized them. He said, “She’s a better person than I am. I should have given her to my son Shelah, but I didn’t.” Judah never slept with Tamar again.
27The time came for Tamar to have her baby. There were twin boys inside her. 28As the babies were being born, one of them stuck out his hand. So the woman helping Tamar took a bright red thread. The woman tied it on the baby’s wrist. She said, “This one came out first.” 29But he pulled his hand back, and his brother came out first instead. She said, “Just look at how you have forced your way out!” So he was called Perez. 30Then his brother, who had the red thread on his wrist, came out. So he was named Zerah.
Judá y Tamar
1Por esos días, Judá se apartó de sus hermanos y se fue a vivir a la casa de un hombre llamado Hirá, residente del pueblo de Adulán. 2Allí Judá conoció a una mujer, hija de un cananeo llamado Súa, y se casó con ella. Después de tener relaciones con él, 3ella concibió y dio a luz un hijo, al que llamó Er. 4Tiempo después volvió a concebir, y dio a luz otro hijo, al que llamó Onán. 5Pasado el tiempo tuvo otro hijo, al que llamó Selá, el cual nació en Quezib.
6Judá consiguió para Er, su hijo mayor, una esposa que se llamaba Tamar. 7Pero al Señor no le agradó la conducta del primogénito de Judá, y le quitó la vida. 8Entonces Judá le dijo a Onán: «Cásate con la viuda de tu hermano y cumple con tu deber de cuñado; así le darás descendencia a tu hermano». 9Pero Onán sabía que los hijos que nacieran no serían reconocidos como suyos. Por eso, cada vez que tenía relaciones con ella, derramaba el semen en el suelo, y así evitaba que su hermano tuviera descendencia. 10Esta conducta ofendió mucho al Señor, así que también a él le quitó la vida. 11Entonces Judá le dijo a su nuera Tamar: «Quédate como viuda en la casa de tu padre, hasta que mi hijo Selá tenga edad de casarse». Pero en realidad Judá pensaba que Selá podría morirse, lo mismo que sus hermanos. Así que Tamar se fue a vivir a la casa de su padre.
12Después de mucho tiempo, murió la esposa de Judá, la hija de Súa. Al concluir el tiempo de duelo, Judá fue al pueblo de Timnat para esquilar sus ovejas. Lo acompañó su amigo Hirá, el adulanita. 13Cuando Tamar se enteró de que su suegro se dirigía hacia Timnat para esquilar sus ovejas, 14se quitó el vestido de viuda, se cubrió con un velo para que nadie la reconociera y se sentó a la entrada del pueblo de Enayin, que está en el camino a Timnat. Esto lo hizo porque se dio cuenta de que Selá ya tenía edad de casarse y aún no se lo daban a ella por esposo.
15Cuando Judá la vio con el rostro cubierto, la tomó por una prostituta. 16No sabiendo que era su nuera, se acercó a la orilla del camino y le dijo:
―Deja que me acueste contigo.
―¿Qué me das si te digo que sí? —le preguntó ella.
17―Te mandaré uno de los cabritos de mi rebaño —respondió Judá.
―Está bien —respondió ella—, pero déjame algo en garantía hasta que me lo mandes.
18―¿Qué prenda quieres que te deje? —preguntó Judá.
―Dame tu sello y tu cordón, y el bastón que llevas en la mano —respondió Tamar.
Judá se los entregó, se acostó con ella y la dejó embarazada. 19Cuando ella se levantó, se fue inmediatamente de allí, se quitó el velo y volvió a ponerse la ropa de viuda.
20Más tarde, Judá envió el cabrito por medio de su amigo adulanita, para recuperar las prendas que había dejado con la mujer; pero su amigo no dio con ella. 21Entonces le preguntó a la gente del lugar:
―¿Dónde está la prostituta38:21 prostituta. Lit. consagrada; es decir, una prostituta consagrada al culto. de Enayin, la que se sentaba junto al camino?
―Aquí nunca ha habido una prostituta así —le contestaron.
22El amigo regresó adonde estaba Judá y le dijo:
―No la pude encontrar. Además, la gente del lugar me informó que allí nunca había estado una prostituta como esa.
23―Que se quede con las prendas —replicó Judá—; no es cuestión de que hagamos el ridículo. Pero que quede claro: yo le envié el cabrito, y tú no la encontraste.
24Como tres meses después, le informaron a Judá lo siguiente:
―Tu nuera Tamar se ha prostituido, y como resultado de sus andanzas ha quedado embarazada.
―¡Sacadla y quemadla! —exclamó Judá.
25Pero, cuando la estaban sacando, ella mandó este mensaje a su suegro: «El dueño de estas prendas fue quien me ha dejado embarazada. A ver si tú reconoces de quién son este sello, el cordón del sello y este bastón».
26Judá los reconoció y declaró: «Su conducta es más justa que la mía, pues yo no se la di por esposa a mi hijo Selá». Y no volvió a acostarse con ella.
27Cuando llegó el tiempo de que Tamar diera a luz, resultó que tenía mellizos en su seno. 28En el momento de nacer, uno de los mellizos sacó la mano; la partera le ató un hilo rojo en la mano, y dijo: «Este salió primero». 29Pero en ese momento el niño metió la mano, y salió primero el otro. Entonces la partera dijo: «¡Cómo te abriste paso!» Por eso al niño lo llamaron Fares.38:29 En hebreo, Fares significa abertura, brecha. 30Luego salió su hermano, con el hilo rojo atado en la mano, y lo llamaron Zera.38:30 En hebreo, Zera puede significar rojo, brillo o resplandor.
