God Tests Abraham
1Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”
“Here I am,” Abraham replied.
2Then God said, “Take your son, your only son. He is the one you love. Take Isaac. Go to the place called Moriah. Give your son to me there as a burnt offering. Sacrifice him on the mountain I will show you.”
3Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took two of his servants and his son Isaac with him. He cut enough wood for the burnt offering. Then he started out for the place God had shown him. 4On the third day Abraham saw the place a long way off. 5He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey. I and the boy will go over there and worship. Then we’ll come back to you.”
6Abraham had his son Isaac carry the wood for the burnt offering. He himself carried the fire and the knife. And the two of them walked on together. 7Then Isaac said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said. “But where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
8Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them walked on together.
9They reached the place God had shown Abraham. There Abraham built an altar. He arranged the wood on it. He tied up his son Isaac. Abraham placed him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10Then he reached out his hand. He picked up the knife to kill his son. 11But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven. He said, “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Here I am,” Abraham replied.
12“Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not harm him. Now I know that you would do anything for God. You have not held back from me your son, your only son.”
13Abraham looked around. There in a bush he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram. He sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14So Abraham named that place The Lord Will Provide. To this day people say, “It will be provided on the mountain of the Lord.”
15The angel of the Lord called out to Abraham from heaven a second time. 16He said, “I am giving you my word that I will bless you. I will bless you because of what you have done,” announces the Lord. “You have not held back your son, your only son. 17So I will certainly bless you. I will make the children born into your family as many as the stars in the sky. I will make them as many as the grains of sand on the seashore. They will take over the cities of their enemies. 18All nations on earth will be blessed because of your children. All these things will happen because you have obeyed me.”
19Then Abraham returned to his servants. They started out together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.
Nahor’s Sons
20Some time later Abraham was told, “Milkah has become a mother. She has had sons by your brother Nahor.
21Uz was born first. Then came his brother Buz.
Kemuel was born next. He became the father of Aram.
22Milkah’s other sons are Kesed, Hazo, Pildash, Jidlaph and Bethuel.”
23Bethuel became the father of Rebekah.
Milkah had the eight sons by Abraham’s brother Nahor.
24Nahor had a concubine named Reumah. She also had sons.
They were Tebah, Gaham, Tahash and Maakah.
Isaac sera-t-il sacrifié ?
1Après ces événements, Dieu mit Abraham à l’épreuve22.1 Allusion en Jc 2.21.. Il l’appela : Abraham !
Et celui-ci répondit : Me voici.
2– Prends Isaac, ton fils unique, que tu aimes, lui dit Dieu, et va au pays de Moriya. Là, tu me l’offriras en sacrifice sur l’une des collines, celle que je t’indiquerai22.2 Voir Hé 11.17-19. Moriya: voir 2 Ch 3.1. offriras en sacrifice: allusion en Hé 11.17-19..
3Le lendemain, Abraham se leva de grand matin, sella son âne et emmena deux de ses serviteurs ainsi que son fils Isaac ; il fendit du bois pour l’holocauste, puis il se mit en route en direction de l’endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué.
4Après trois jours de marche, Abraham, levant les yeux, aperçut le lieu dans le lointain. 5Alors il dit à ses serviteurs : Restez ici avec l’âne ; le garçon et moi, nous irons jusque là-bas pour adorer Dieu, puis nous reviendrons vers vous.
6Abraham chargea le bois de l’holocauste sur son fils Isaac ; il prit lui-même des braises pour le feu et le couteau, puis tous deux s’en allèrent ensemble.
7Isaac s’adressa à son père Abraham et lui dit : Mon père !
Abraham dit : Qu’y a-t-il, mon fils ?
– Voici le feu et le bois, dit-il, mais où est l’agneau pour l’holocauste ?
8Abraham répondit : Mon fils, Dieu pourvoira lui-même à l’agneau pour l’holocauste.
Et ils poursuivirent leur chemin tous deux ensemble.
9Quand ils furent arrivés à l’endroit que Dieu lui avait indiqué, Abraham construisit un autel et y disposa les bûches. Puis il ligota son fils Isaac et le mit sur l’autel par-dessus le bois. 10Alors Abraham prit en main le couteau pour immoler son fils. 11A ce moment-là, l’ange de l’Eternel lui cria du haut du ciel : Abraham ! Abraham !
– Me voici, répondit-il.
12L’ange reprit : Ne porte pas la main sur le garçon, ne lui fais pas de mal, car maintenant je sais que tu crains Dieu puisque tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils unique.
13Alors Abraham aperçut un bélier qui s’était pris les cornes dans un buisson22.13 D’après certains manuscrits, le Pentateuque samaritain et la version syriaque. Le texte hébreu traditionnel a : derrière lui.. Il s’en saisit et l’offrit en holocauste à la place de son fils. 14Abraham appela ce lieu-là : Adonaï-Yireéh (le Seigneur pourvoira). C’est pourquoi on dit aujourd’hui : Sur la montagne du Seigneur, il sera pourvu.
15Puis l’ange de l’Eternel appela une seconde fois Abraham du haut du ciel 16et lui dit : Je le jure par moi-même, parole de l’Eternel, puisque tu as fait cela, puisque tu ne m’as pas refusé ton fils, ton unique, 17je te comblerai de bénédictions, je multiplierai ta descendance et je la rendrai aussi nombreuse que les étoiles du ciel et que les grains de sable au bord de la mer. Ta descendance dominera sur ses ennemis22.17 Les v. 16-17 sont cités en Hé 6.13-14.. 18Tous les peuples de la terre seront bénis à travers ta descendance parce que tu m’as obéi.
19Abraham revint vers ses serviteurs et ils se remirent ensemble en route pour rentrer à Beer-Sheva où Abraham continua d’habiter.
La descendance de Nahor
20Après ces événements, on annonça à Abraham que Milka avait donné des enfants à Nahor, son frère : 21Outs son premier-né, Bouz le second, Qemouel, père d’Aram, 22Késéd, Hazo, Pildash, Yidlaph et Betouel. 23Betouel fut le père de Rébecca. Ce sont là les huit fils que Milka avait donnés à Nahor, frère d’Abraham. 24Son épouse de second rang Reouma lui donna aussi des enfants : Tébah, Gaham, Tahash et Maaka.
