The Lord Announces the Tenth Plague
1The Lord had spoken to Moses. He had said, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. After that, he will let you and your people go. When he does, he will drive every one of you away. 2Tell the men and women alike to ask their neighbors for things made out of silver and gold.” 3The Lord caused the Egyptians to treat the Israelites in a kind way. Pharaoh’s officials and the people had great respect for Moses.
4Moses told Pharaoh, “The Lord says, ‘About midnight I will go through every part of Egypt. 5Every oldest son in Egypt will die. The oldest son of Pharaoh, who sits on the throne, will die. The oldest son of every female slave, who works at her hand mill, will die. All the male animals born first to their mothers among the cattle will also die. 6There will be loud crying all over Egypt. It will be worse than it’s ever been before. And nothing like it will ever be heard again. 7But among the Israelites not even one dog will bark at any person or animal.’ Then you will know that the Lord treats Egypt differently from us. 8All your officials will come and bow down to me. They will say, ‘Go, you and all the people who follow you!’ After that, I will leave.” Moses was very angry when he left Pharaoh.
9The Lord had spoken to Moses. He had said, “Pharaoh will refuse to listen to you. So I will multiply the amazing things I will do in Egypt.” 10Moses and Aaron performed all these amazing things in the sight of Pharaoh. But the Lord made Pharaoh stubborn. He wouldn’t let the people of Israel go out of his country.
A morte dos primogénitos
1Disse o Senhor de novo a Moisés: “Mandarei só mais uma grande calamidade sobre o Faraó e a sua terra, depois da qual deixará então o povo partir. Desta vez ficará, na realidade, tão ansioso por se ver livre de vocês que será ele próprio, praticamente, a expulsar-vos. 2Diz a todos os homens e mulheres de Israel que se preparem, pedindo aos seus vizinhos egípcios todo o tipo de objetos caros, de prata e ouro.”
3O Senhor fez com que os egípcios se tornassem agradáveis para eles, até porque Moisés era já uma grande figura no Egito, respeitado não só pelos funcionários do Faraó, como por todo o povo.
4Moisés fez então anunciar ao Faraó: “Assim diz o Senhor: ‘Cerca da meia-noite passarei através do Egito. 5E morrerão todos os filhos mais velhos de cada família no país; desde o filho mais velho do Faraó, herdeiro do trono, até ao filho mais velho do mais humilde escravo, inclusive dos animais. 6Um grande clamor de morte se levantará em toda a terra. Nunca se terá visto tristeza semelhante, nem antes nem depois. 7Contudo, nem sequer um cão ousará ladrar contra alguém do povo de Israel ou contra um só dos seus animais, para que saibam a diferença que o Senhor faz entre os egípcios e os israelitas.’ 8Toda a tua comitiva virá até mim, inclinando-se e rogando: ‘Por favor, retira-te imediatamente daqui e leva o teu povo contigo.’ Nessa altura, então, ir-me-ei!” E Moisés retirou-se, encolerizado, do palácio.
9O Senhor disse a Moisés: “O Faraó não vos ouvirá, e isso dar-me-á oportunidade de fazer poderosas maravilhas que demonstrem o meu poder.” 10Por isso, ainda que Moisés e Aarão tenham feito estes milagres na presença do próprio Faraó, o Senhor endureceu o coração deste e não deixou sair daquela terra os filhos de Israel.
