Everything Is Meaningless
1These are the words of the Teacher. He was the son of David. He was also the king in Jerusalem.
2“Meaningless! Everything is meaningless!”
says the Teacher.
“Everything is completely meaningless!
Nothing has any meaning.”
3What do people get for all their work?
Why do they work so hard on this earth?
4People come and people go.
But the earth remains forever.
5The sun rises. Then it sets.
And then it hurries back to where it rises.
6The wind blows to the south.
Then it turns to the north.
Around and around it goes.
It always returns to where it started.
7Every stream flows into the ocean.
But the ocean never gets full.
The streams return
to the place they came from.
8All things are tiresome.
They are more tiresome than anyone can say.
But our eyes never see enough of anything.
Our ears never hear enough.
9Everything that has ever been will come back again.
Everything that has ever been done will be done again.
Nothing is new on earth.
10There isn’t anything about which someone can say,
“Look! Here’s something new.”
It was already here long ago.
It was here before we were.
11No one remembers the people of long ago.
Even those who haven’t been born yet
won’t be remembered
by those who will be born after them.
Wisdom Is Meaningless
12I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13I decided to study things carefully. I used my wisdom to check everything out. I looked into everything that is done on earth. What a heavy load God has put on human beings! 14I’ve seen what is done on this earth. All of it is meaningless. It’s like chasing the wind.
15People can’t straighten things that are crooked.
They can’t count things that don’t even exist.
16I said to myself, “Look, I’ve now grown wiser than anyone who ruled over Jerusalem in the past. I have a lot of wisdom and knowledge.” 17Then I used my mind to understand what it really means to be wise. And I wanted to know what foolish pleasure is all about. But I found out that it’s also like chasing the wind.
18A lot of human wisdom leads to a lot of sorrow.
More knowledge only brings more sadness.
덧없는 인생
1이것은 다윗의 아들이며 예루살렘의 왕인 전도자 솔로몬의 말이다.
2전도자는 말한다. “모든 것이 헛되고 무가치하며 의미가 없으니 아무것도 소중한 것이 없구나.”
3사람이 평생 동안 수고하여 얻는 것이 무엇인가?
4세대는 왔다가 가지만 1:4 또는 ‘내가 사는 것을 한하였노니’세상은 변함이 없구나.
5해는 떴다가 져서 그 떴던 곳으로 빨리 되돌아가며
6바람은 남으로 불고 북으로 불다가 돌고 돌아 다시 돌아가고
7모든 강물이 바다로 흘러도 바다를 다 채우지 못하며 그 물은 강으로 되돌아가 다시 바다로 흐른다.
8만물의 피곤함을 이루 다 말할 수 없으니 사람이 아무리 많은 것을 보고 들어도 만족함을 모르는구나.
9전에 있던 것도 다시 있을 것이며 이미 한 일도 다시 하게 될 것이니 세상에는 아무것도 새로운 것이 없다.
10“보라, 이것은 새 것이다” 하고 말할 수 있는 게 무엇인가? 그것은 우리가 태어나기 전에 오래 전부터 있었던 것이다.
11우리가 과거에 일어난 일을 기억하지 않으니 앞으로 올 세대들도 우리 시대에 일어난 일을 기억하지 않으리라.
세상적인 지혜와 지식의 무상함
12나 전도자는 예루살렘에서 이스라엘의 왕이 되어
13정신을 집중하고 지혜를 모아 이 세상의 모든 일을 깊이 연구하고 살펴보았으니 하나님이 주신 인간의 운명은 괴롭고 고통스러운 것이다.
14내가 세상에서 되어지는 모든 일을 보니 다 허무하여 바람을 잡으려는 것 같다.
15비틀어진 것은 바로잡을 수 없으며 없는 것은 셀 수가 없다.
16나는 혼자 이런 생각을 해 보았다. “나는 나보다 먼저 예루살렘을 다스린 그 어떤 사람보다 더 위대하고 지혜로우며 많은 지혜와 지식을 쌓았다.”
17그 후에 내가 지혜와 미치는 것과 어리석음에 대해서 알고자 정신을 쏟았으나 이것도 역시 바람을 잡으려는 것임을 깨달았다.
18지혜가 많으면 번민이 많고 지식이 많으면 근심이 많은 법이다.
