Ananias and Sapphira
1A man named Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, also sold some land. 2He kept part of the money for himself. Sapphira knew he had kept it. He brought the rest of it and put it down at the apostles’ feet.
3Then Peter said, “Ananias, why did you let Satan fill your heart? He made you lie to the Holy Spirit. You have kept some of the money you received for the land. 4Didn’t the land belong to you before it was sold? After it was sold, you could have used the money as you wished. What made you think of doing such a thing? You haven’t lied just to people. You’ve also lied to God.”
5When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. All who heard what had happened were filled with fear. 6Some young men came and wrapped up his body. They carried him out and buried him.
7About three hours later, the wife of Ananias came in. She didn’t know what had happened. 8Peter asked her, “Tell me. Is this the price you and Ananias sold the land for?”
“Yes,” she said. “That’s the price.”
9Peter asked her, “How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord? Listen! You can hear the steps of the men who buried your husband. They are at the door. They will carry you out also.”
10At that moment she fell down at Peter’s feet and died. Then the young men came in. They saw that Sapphira was dead. So they carried her out and buried her beside her husband. 11The whole church and all who heard about these things were filled with fear.
The Apostles Heal Many People
12The apostles did many signs and wonders among the people. All the believers used to meet together at Solomon’s Porch. 13No outsider dared to join them. But the people thought highly of them. 14More and more men and women believed in the Lord. They joined the other believers. 15So people brought those who were sick into the streets. They placed them on beds and mats. They hoped that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he walked by. 16Crowds even gathered from the towns around Jerusalem. They brought their sick people. They also brought those who were suffering because of evil spirits. All of them were healed.
The Apostles Are Treated Badly
17The high priest and all his companions were Sadducees. They were very jealous of the apostles. 18So they arrested them and put them in the public jail. 19But during the night an angel of the Lord came. He opened the doors of the jail and brought the apostles out. 20“Go! Stand in the temple courtyard,” the angel said. “Tell the people all about this new life.”
21Early the next day they did as they had been told. They entered the temple courtyard. There they began to teach the people.
The high priest and his companions arrived. They called the Sanhedrin together. The Sanhedrin was a gathering of all the elders of Israel. They sent for the apostles who were in jail. 22The officers arrived at the jail. But they didn’t find the apostles there. So they went back and reported it. 23“We found the jail locked up tight,” they said. “The guards were standing at the doors. But when we opened the doors, we didn’t find anyone inside.” 24When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this report, they were bewildered. They wondered what would happen next.
25Then someone came and said, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple courtyard. They are teaching the people.” 26So the captain went with his officers and brought the apostles back. But they didn’t use force. They were afraid the people would kill them by throwing stones at them.
27They brought the apostles to the Sanhedrin. The high priest questioned them. 28“We gave you clear orders not to teach in Jesus’ name,” he said. “But you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching. You want to make us guilty of this man’s death.”
29Peter and the other apostles replied, “We must obey God instead of people! 30You had Jesus killed by nailing him to a cross. But the God of our people raised Jesus from the dead. 31Now Jesus is Prince and Savior. God has proved this by giving Jesus a place of honor with him. He did it to turn Israel away from their sins and forgive them. 32We are telling people about these things. And so is the Holy Spirit. God has given the Spirit to those who obey him.”
33When the leaders heard this, they became very angry. They wanted to put the apostles to death. 34But a Pharisee named Gamaliel stood up in the Sanhedrin. He was a teacher of the law. He was honored by all the people. He ordered the apostles to be taken outside for a little while. 35Then Gamaliel spoke to the Sanhedrin. “Men of Israel,” he said, “think carefully about what you plan to do to these men. 36Some time ago Theudas appeared. He claimed he was really somebody. About 400 people followed him. But he was killed. All his followers were scattered. So they accomplished nothing. 37After this, Judas from Galilee came along. This was in the days when the Romans made a list of all the people. Judas led a gang of men against the Romans. He too was killed. All his followers were scattered. 38So let me give you some advice. Leave these men alone! Let them go! If their plans and actions only come from people, they will fail. 39But if their plans come from God, you won’t be able to stop these men. You will only find yourselves fighting against God.”
40His speech won the leaders over. They called the apostles in and had them whipped. The leaders ordered them not to speak in Jesus’ name. Then they let the apostles go.
41The apostles were full of joy as they left the Sanhedrin. They considered it an honor to suffer shame for the name of Jesus. 42Every day they taught in the temple courtyards and from house to house. They never stopped telling people the good news that Jesus is the Messiah.

Termenul diabolos este traducerea grecească a lui Satan. inima ca să‑L minți pe Duhul Sfânt, păstrând pentru tine o parte din prețul ogorului? 4Dacă rămânea nevândut, nu rămânea el al tău? Și, după ce a fost vândut, nu erau banii la dispoziția ta? De ce ai pus la cale acest lucru în inima ta? Nu pe oameni i‑ai mințit, ci pe Dumnezeu!“ 5Când a auzit Ananias aceste cuvinte, a căzut și și‑a dat suflarea. O mare frică i‑a cuprins pe toți cei ce auziseră aceste lucruri. 6Cei tineri s‑au ridicat, l‑au învelit, l‑au scos afară și l‑au înmormântat.
7Cam după trei ore, a intrat și soția lui, fără să știe ce se întâmplase.
8Petru a întrebat‑o:
– Spune‑mi, cu atât ați vândut ogorul?
Ea i‑a răspuns:
– Da, cu atât.
9Atunci Petru i‑a zis:
– De ce v‑ați înțeles între voi să‑L puneți la încercare pe Duhul Domnului? Iată, picioarele celor ce l‑au înmormântat pe soțul tău sunt la ușă și te vor duce și pe tine!
10Atunci ea a căzut deodată la picioarele lui și și‑a dat suflarea. Când au intrat tinerii, au găsit‑o moartă; ei au dus‑o afară și au înmormântat‑o lângă soțul ei. 11O mare frică a cuprins toată biserica11 Prima apariție a acestui termen în această carte. Termenul, întrebuințat în LXX cu privire la adunarea lui Israel, era folosit în perioada NT pentru a desemna o adunare formată din cetățenii liberi, cu drept de vot, ai unei așezări. și pe toți cei ce auziseră aceste lucruri.
Prin apostoli se fac semne și minuni
12Prin mâinile apostolilor se făceau multe semne și minuni în popor. Toți se adunau în același gând în Porticul lui Solomon 13și niciunul din ceilalți nu îndrăznea să li se alăture, deși poporul îi lăuda foarte mult. 14Totuși, tot mai mulți din cei ce credeau, – o mulțime de bărbați și femei –, erau adăugați la Domnul. 15Oamenii îi scoteau chiar și pe străzi pe cei neputincioși și‑i puneau pe tărgi și pe așternuturi, pentru ca, atunci când trecea Petru, măcar umbra lui să cadă peste vreunul dintre ei. 16Mulțimea se aduna și din cetățile din jurul Ierusalimului, aducându‑i pe cei bolnavi și pe cei chinuiți de duhuri necurate. Și toți erau vindecați.
Apostolii persecutați
17Însă marele preot și toți cei ce erau împreună cu el, adică partida saducheilor, s‑au ridicat plini de invidie, 18au pus mâna pe apostoli și i‑au aruncat în închisoarea publică. 19Dar un înger al Domnului a deschis ușile închisorii în timpul nopții, i‑a condus afară și le‑a zis: 20„Duceți‑vă, stați în Templu și spuneți poporului toate cuvintele Vieții acesteia!“ 21Auzind ei aceasta, au intrat în Templu dis‑de‑dimineață și au început să dea învățătură. Când a sosit marele preot și cei ce erau împreună cu el, au convocat Sinedriul, adică tot Sfatul Bătrânilor21 Gr.: gerousia, o denumire diferită pentru același corp legislativ, Sinedriul (vezi 1 Macabei 12:6 și Flavius Josephus, Antichități, 13.5.8). fiilor lui Israel, și au trimis după apostoli la închisoare, ca să fie aduși. 22Gărzile însă, când au sosit acolo, nu i‑au găsit în închisoare, așa că s‑au întors și au anunțat, 23zicând: „Închisoarea am găsit‑o încuiată cu toată grija, iar pe gardieni i‑am găsit stând la uși, dar când am deschis, n‑am găsit pe nimeni înăuntru!“ 24Când au auzit cuvintele acestea, atât comandantul gărzii Templului, cât și conducătorii preoților au rămas înmărmuriți din cauza lor și se întrebau ce se întâmplă. 25Cineva însă a venit și i‑a anunțat: „Iată că bărbații pe care i‑ați aruncat în închisoare stau în Templu și dau învățătură poporului!“ 26Atunci comandantul s‑a dus împreună cu gărzile și i‑a adus, însă nu cu forța, pentru că se temeau să nu fie loviți cu pietre de popor.
27I‑au adus și i‑au pus să stea înaintea Sinedriului.
Marele preot i‑a întrebat, 28zicând:
– Nu28 Unele mss nu conțin negația, redând textul ca o afirmație. v‑am poruncit răspicat să nu mai dați învățătură în Numele acesta? Dar iată că voi ați umplut Ierusalimul cu învățătura voastră și vreți să aruncați peste noi vina pentru sângele Acestui Om!
29Dar Petru și ceilalți apostoli, răspunzând, au zis:
– Trebuie să ascultăm mai mult de Dumnezeu decât de oameni! 30Dumnezeul strămoșilor30 Lit.: taților. noștri L‑a înviat pe Isus, pe Care voi L‑ați ucis, pironindu‑L pe lemn. 31Pe El, Dumnezeu L‑a înălțat la dreapta Sa, ca Prinț31 Vezi nota de la 3:15. și Mântuitor, ca să dea lui Israel pocăință și iertare de păcate. 32Iar noi suntem martori ai acestor lucruri și, de asemenea, și Duhul Sfânt pe Care L‑a dat Dumnezeu celor ce ascultă de El.
33Când au auzit ei acestea, s‑au înfuriat și au vrut să‑i omoare. 34Dar un fariseu34 Fariseii formau o grupare religioasă care cunoștea și respecta cu strictețe litera Legii, precum și alte tradiții (reguli bazate pe o interpretare a Legii scrise: legea orală) [peste tot în carte]. pe nume Gamaliel34 Gamaliel I, zis „cel Bătrân“, președinte-patriarh (nasi) al Sinedriului, purtând titlul onorific de Raban („Învățătorul nostru“) – un titlu mai important decât cel de Rabbi („Învățătorul meu“) – fondatorul unei „dinastii“ rabinice (urmașii lui, Simon ben Gamaliel I, Gamaliel al II‑lea și Simon ben Gamaliel II vor deține funcția de nasi pe parcursul primelor două secole). Decretele pe care le‑a dat îl arată ca un om moderat, tolerant, care și‑a arătat grija îndeosebi față de categoriile marginalizate ale societății (străini, femei, văduve) [peste tot în carte]., un învățător al Legii respectat de tot poporul, s‑a ridicat în Sinedriu și a poruncit ca oamenii să fie scoși afară puțin. 35Apoi le‑a zis: „Bărbați israeliți, aveți grijă ce urmează să le faceți acestor oameni! 36Căci, nu demult, s‑a ridicat Teudas, care spunea despre sine că este cineva și căruia i s‑au alăturat aproape patru sute de bărbați. El a fost omorât, iar toți aceia care se încrezuseră în el au fost împrăștiați și nu s‑a ales nimic de ei. 37După el, pe vremea recensământului37 Recensământul din anul 6 d.Cr. (vezi nota de la Lc. 2:2)., s‑a ridicat Iuda, galileeanul, și a atras poporul după el. Dar și el a pierit, iar toți aceia care se încrezuseră în el au fost împrăștiați. 38Iar acum, eu vă spun: depărtați‑vă de oamenii aceștia și lăsați‑i! Dacă planul sau lucrarea aceasta este de la oameni, va fi distrusă, 39dar, dacă este de la Dumnezeu, nu‑i veți putea distruge pe acești oameni! Să nu vă treziți că luptați împotriva lui Dumnezeu!“ Astfel, ei au fost convinși de el.
40Apoi i‑au chemat pe apostoli, i‑au biciuit, le‑au poruncit să nu mai vorbească în Numele lui Isus și le‑au dat drumul. 41Prin urmare, apostolii au plecat dinaintea Sinedriului, bucurându‑se că au fost considerați vrednici să fie umiliți pentru Numele Lui. 42Și, în fiecare zi, în Templu și prin case, nu încetau să dea învățătură și să ducă vestea bună42 Cuvântul Evanghelie (care înseamnă Vestea Bună) derivă din același termen grecesc tradus aici cu să ducă vestea bună. că Isus este Cristosul.
