God’s Promise to David
1The king moved into his palace. The Lord had given him peace and rest from all his enemies around him. 2Then the king spoke to Nathan the prophet. He said, “Here I am, living in a house that has beautiful cedar walls. But the ark of God remains in a tent.”
3Nathan replied to the king, “Go ahead and do what you want to. The Lord is with you.”
4But that night the word of the Lord came to Nathan. The Lord said,
5“Go and speak to my servant David. Tell him, ‘The Lord says, “Are you the one to build me a house to live in? 6I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt. But I have not lived in a house from then until now. I have been moving from place to place. I have been living in a tent. 7I have moved from place to place with all the Israelites. I commanded their rulers to be shepherds over them. I never asked any of those rulers, ‘Why haven’t you built me a house that has beautiful cedar walls?’ ” ’
8“So tell my servant David, ‘The Lord who rules over all says, “I took you away from the grasslands. That’s where you were taking care of your father’s sheep and goats. I made you ruler over my people Israel. 9I have been with you everywhere you have gone. I have destroyed all your enemies. Now I will make you famous. Your name will be just as respected as the names of the most important people on earth. 10I will provide a place where my people Israel can live. I will plant them in the land. Then they will have a home of their own. They will not be bothered anymore. Evil people will no longer crush them, as they did at first. 11That is what your enemies have done ever since I appointed leaders over my people Israel. But I will give you peace and rest from all of them.
“ ‘ “I tell you that I, the Lord, will set up a royal house for you. 12Some day your life will come to an end. You will join the members of your family who have already died. Then I will make one of your own sons the next king after you. And I will make his kingdom secure. 13He is the one who will build a house where I will put my Name. I will set up the throne of his kingdom. It will last forever. 14I will be his father. And he will be my son. When he does what is wrong, I will use other men to beat him with rods and whips. 15I took my love away from Saul. I removed him from being king. You were there when I did it. But I will never take my love away from your son. 16Your royal house and your kingdom will last forever in my sight. Your throne will last forever.” ’ ”
17Nathan reported to David all the words that the Lord had spoken to him.
David’s Prayer to the Lord
18Then King David went into the holy tent. He sat down in front of the Lord. He said,
“Lord and King, who am I? My family isn’t important. So why have you brought me this far? 19I would have thought that you had already done more than enough for me. But now, Lord and King, you have also said what will happen to my royal house in days to come. And, my Lord and King, this promise is for a mere human being!
20“What more can I say to you? Lord and King, you know all about me. 21You have done a wonderful thing. You have made it known to me. You have done it because that’s what you said you would do. It’s exactly what you wanted to do for me.
22“Lord and King, how great you are! There isn’t anyone like you. There isn’t any God but you. We have heard about it with our own ears. 23Who is like your people Israel? God, we are the one nation on earth you have saved. You have set us free for yourself. Your name has become famous. You have done great and wonderful things. You have driven out nations and their gods to make room for your people. You saved us when you set us free from Egypt. 24You made Israel your very own people forever. Lord, you have become our God.
25“And now, Lord God, keep forever the promise you have made to me and my royal house. Do exactly as you promised. 26Then your name will be honored forever. People will say, ‘The Lord rules over all. He is God over Israel.’ My royal house will be made secure in your sight.
27“Lord who rules over all, you are the God of Israel. Here’s what you have shown me. You told me, ‘I will build you a royal house.’ So I can boldly pray this prayer to you. 28Lord and King, you are God! Your covenant can be trusted. You have promised many good things to me. 29Now please bless my royal house. Then it will continue forever in your sight. Lord and King, you have spoken. Because you have given my royal house your blessing, it will be blessed forever.”
Promesa de Dios a David
7:1-17 – 1Cr 17:1-15
1Una vez el rey David estuvo instalado en su palacio, el Señor le dio descanso de todos los enemigos que lo rodeaban. 2Entonces el rey dijo al profeta Natán:
—Como puedes ver, yo habito en un palacio de cedro, mientras que el arca de Dios se encuentra bajo el toldo de una tienda.
3—Bien —respondió Natán—. Haga usted lo que su corazón dicte, pues el Señor está con usted.
4Pero aquella misma noche la palabra del Señor vino a Natán y le dijo:
5«Ve y dile a mi siervo David que así dice el Señor: “¿Serás tú acaso quien me construya una casa para que yo la habite? 6Desde el día en que liberé a los israelitas de Egipto y hasta el día de hoy, no he habitado en casa alguna, sino que he andado de acá para allá, en una tienda a manera de santuario. 7Todo el tiempo que anduve con los israelitas, ¿acaso le reclamé a alguno de los gobernantes, a los que ordené pastorear a mi pueblo Israel, el no haberme construido una casa de cedro?”.
8»Pues bien, dile a mi siervo David que así dice el Señor de los Ejércitos: “Yo te saqué del redil para que, en vez de cuidar ovejas, gobernaras a mi pueblo Israel. 9Yo he estado contigo por dondequiera que has ido y he aniquilado a todos tus enemigos. Y ahora voy a hacerte tan famoso como los más grandes de la tierra. 10También voy a designar un lugar para mi pueblo Israel, y allí los plantaré para que puedan vivir sin sobresaltos. Sus malvados enemigos no volverán a oprimirlos como lo han hecho desde el principio, 11desde el día en que nombré líderes sobre mi pueblo Israel. Y a ti te daré descanso de todos tus enemigos.
»”Pero ahora el Señor te hace saber que será él quien te construya una casa. 12Cuando tu vida llegue a su fin y vayas a descansar entre tus antepasados, yo pondré en el trono a uno de tus propios descendientes y afirmaré su reino. 13Será él quien construya una casa en honor de mi Nombre y yo afirmaré el trono de su reino para siempre. 14Yo seré su Padre y él será mi hijo. Así que, cuando haga lo malo, lo castigaré con varas y azotes, como lo haría un padre. 15Sin embargo, no le negaré mi amor, como se lo negué a Saúl, a quien abandoné para abrirte paso. 16Tu casa y tu reino durarán para siempre delante de mí;7:16 mí (mss. hebreos; véanse LXX y Siríaca); ti (TM). tu trono quedará establecido para siempre”».
17Natán comunicó todo esto a David, tal como lo había recibido por revelación.
Oración de David
7:18-29 – 1Cr 17:16-27
18Luego el rey David se presentó ante el Señor y dijo:
«Señor y Dios, ¿quién soy yo y qué es mi familia para que me hayas hecho llegar tan lejos? 19Como si esto fuera poco, oh Señor y Dios, has hecho promesas a este tu siervo en cuanto al futuro de su casa. ¡Tal es tu plan para con los hombres, mi Señor y Dios!7:19 ¡Tal … Dios! Alt. ¿Así procedes con el hombre, mi Señor y Dios? o ¿Así actúa el hombre, mi Señor y Dios?
20»¿Qué más podría decir tu siervo David que tú no sepas, Señor mi Dios? 21Has hecho todas estas grandes maravillas en cumplimiento de tu palabra, según tu voluntad, y las has dado a conocer a tu siervo.
22»¡Qué grande eres, mi Señor y Dios! Nosotros mismos hemos aprendido que no hay nadie como tú y que aparte de ti no hay Dios. 23¿Y qué nación se puede comparar con tu pueblo Israel? Es la única nación en la tierra que tú has redimido para hacerla tu propio pueblo y para dar a conocer tu nombre. Hiciste grandes y asombrosas maravillas cuando al paso de tu pueblo, al cual redimiste de Egipto, expulsaste a las naciones y a sus dioses.7:23 cuando al paso … a sus dioses (LXX; véase 1Cr 17:21); por tu tierra al paso de tu pueblo, al cual redimiste de Egipto, de las naciones y sus dioses (TM). 24Estableciste a Israel para que fuera tu pueblo para siempre y para que tú, Señor, fueras su Dios.
25»Y ahora, Señor y Dios, reafirma para siempre la promesa que has hecho a tu siervo y a su casa. Cumple tu palabra 26para que tu nombre sea siempre exaltado y para que todos digan: “¡El Señor de los Ejércitos es Dios de Israel!”. Entonces la casa de tu siervo David quedará establecida en tu presencia.
27»Señor de los Ejércitos, Dios de Israel, tú le has revelado a tu siervo el propósito de establecerle una casa y por eso tu siervo se ha atrevido a hacerte esta súplica. 28¡Oh Señor y Dios, tú eres Dios y has prometido tanta bondad a tu siervo! ¡Tus promesas son fieles! 29Dígnate entonces bendecir a la familia de tu siervo, de modo que bajo tu protección exista para siempre, pues tú mismo, Señor y Dios, lo has prometido. Si tú bendices la dinastía de tu siervo, quedará bendita para siempre».
