David Among the Philistines
1David thought, “Some day Saul will destroy me. So the best thing I can do is escape. I’ll go to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will stop looking for me everywhere in Israel. His hand won’t be able to reach me.”
2So David and his 600 men left Israel. They went to Achish, the king of Gath. He was the son of Maok. 3David and his men made their homes in Gath near Achish. Each of David’s men had his family with him. David had his two wives with him. They were Ahinoam from Jezreel and Abigail from Carmel. Abigail was Nabal’s widow. 4Saul was told that David had run away to Gath. So he didn’t look for David anymore.
5David said to Achish, “If you are pleased with me, give me a place in one of your country towns. I can live there. I don’t really need to live near you in the royal city.”
6So on that day Achish gave David the town of Ziklag. It has belonged to the kings of Judah ever since that time. 7David lived in Philistine territory for a year and four months.
8Sometimes David and his men would go up and attack the Geshurites. At other times they would attack the Girzites or the Amalekites. All those people had lived in the land that reached all the way to Shur and Egypt. They had been there for a long time. 9When David would attack an area, he wouldn’t leave a man or woman alive. But he would take their sheep, cattle, donkeys, camels and clothes. Then he would return to Achish.
10Achish would ask, “Who did you attack today?” David would answer, “The people who live in the Negev Desert of Judah.” Or he would answer, “The people in the Negev Desert of Jerahmeel.” Or he would answer, “The people in the Negev Desert of the Kenites.” 11David wouldn’t leave a man or woman alive to be brought back to Gath. He thought, “They might tell on us. They might tell Achish who we really attacked.” That’s what David did as long as he lived in Philistine territory. 12Achish trusted David. He thought, “David’s own people, the Israelites, can’t stand him anymore. So he’ll be my servant for life.”
David se réfugie de nouveau chez les Philistins
1David réfléchit et se dit : Un jour ou l’autre, Saül finira bien par me tuer. Ce que j’ai de mieux à faire, c’est de m’enfuir pour de bon et de me réfugier au pays des Philistins, pour qu’il renonce à me traquer dans tout le territoire d’Israël ; ainsi j’échapperai à son emprise. 2-3Là-dessus, David se mit en route avec ses deux femmes, Ahinoam de Jizréel et Abigaïl, femme de Nabal de Karmel, ainsi qu’avec ses six cents hommes et leurs familles ; ils se rendirent chez Akish, fils de Maok, roi de Gath, et s’établirent là. 4On informa Saül que David s’était enfui à Gath et il cessa de le poursuivre.
5David dit à Akish : Si tu acceptes de me faire une faveur, autorise-moi à m’installer dans un village quelconque de la campagne. Il n’y a pas de raison pour que ton serviteur réside dans la ville royale avec toi.
6Alors Akish lui attribua ce même jour Tsiqlag. C’est pourquoi Tsiqlag a appartenu jusqu’à ce jour aux rois de Juda. 7David demeura un an et quatre mois en Philistie.
Les razzias de David
8Pendant ce temps, il faisait avec ses hommes des razzias, tour à tour, chez les Gueshouriens, les Guizriens et les Amalécites, des peuplades qui habitaient depuis très longtemps dans le pays qui s’étend en direction de Shour jusqu’à la frontière de l’Egypte. 9David ravageait cette contrée et ne laissait en vie ni homme ni femme ; il ramenait brebis, chèvres et bœufs, ânes, chameaux et vêtements et, à son retour, se rendait chez Akish.
10Quand Akish lui demandait : Où avez-vous fait votre razzia cette fois-ci ?
David répondait : Dans le sud de Juda. Ou : Dans la partie sud du territoire des Yerahmeélites ou des Qéniens27.10 D’après 1 Ch 2.9, 25, 26, les Yerahmeélites étaient des descendants de Juda par Hetsrôn. Pour les Qéniens, voir Jg 4.11 et note..
11Il ne laissait pas de survivant pour ne pas avoir à les amener à Gath, afin qu’ils ne rapportent pas les agissements de David. David suivit cette ligne de conduite pendant tout le temps qu’il séjourna en territoire philistin. 12Akish comptait de plus en plus sur David, car il se disait : Il s’est sûrement attiré la haine d’Israël, son peuple, et il restera pour toujours à mon service.
