Elijah and Obadiah
1It was now three years since it had rained. A message came to Elijah from the Lord. He said, “Go. Speak to Ahab. Then I will send rain on the land.” 2So Elijah went to speak to Ahab.
There wasn’t enough food in Samaria. The people there were very hungry. 3Ahab had sent for Obadiah. He was in charge of Ahab’s palace. Obadiah had great respect for the Lord. 4Ahab’s wife Jezebel had been killing off the Lord’s prophets. So Obadiah had hidden 100 prophets in two caves. He had put 50 in each cave. He had supplied them with food and water. 5Ahab had said to Obadiah, “Go through the land. Go to all the valleys and springs of water. Maybe we can find some grass there. It will keep the horses and mules alive. Then we won’t have to kill any of our animals.” 6So they decided where each of them would look. Ahab went in one direction. Obadiah went in another.
7As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him. He bowed down to the ground. He said, “My master Elijah! Is it really you?”
8“Yes,” he replied. “Go and tell your master Ahab, ‘Elijah is here.’ ”
9“What have I done wrong?” asked Obadiah. “Why are you handing me over to Ahab to be put to death? 10My master has sent people to look for you everywhere. There isn’t a nation or kingdom where he hasn’t sent someone to look for you. Suppose a nation or kingdom would claim you weren’t there. Then Ahab would make them give their word that they couldn’t find you. And that’s just as sure as the Lord your God is alive. 11But now you are telling me to go to my master. You want me to say, ‘Elijah is here.’ 12But the Spirit of the Lord might carry you away when I leave you. Then I won’t know where you are. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he’ll kill me. But I’ve worshiped the Lord ever since I was young. 13My master, haven’t you heard what I did? Jezebel was killing the Lord’s prophets. But I hid 100 of them in two caves. I put 50 in each cave. I supplied them with food and water. 14And now you are telling me to go to my master Ahab. You want me to say to him, ‘Elijah is here.’ Ahab will kill me!”
15Elijah said, “I serve the Lord who rules over all. You can be sure that he lives. And you can be just as sure that I will speak to Ahab today.”
Elijah on Mount Carmel
16Obadiah went back to Ahab. He told Ahab that Elijah wanted to see him. So Ahab went to where Elijah was. 17When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you? You are always stirring up trouble in Israel.”
18“I haven’t made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have turned away from the Lord’s commands. You have followed gods that are named Baal. 19Now send for people from all over Israel. Tell them to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the 450 prophets of the god named Baal. Also bring the 400 prophets of the female god named Asherah. All of them eat at Jezebel’s table.”
20So Ahab sent that message all through Israel. He gathered the prophets together on Mount Carmel. 21Elijah went there and stood in front of the people. He said, “How long will it take you to make up your minds? If the Lord is the one and only God, worship him. But if Baal is the one and only God, worship him.”
The people didn’t say anything.
22Then Elijah said to them, “I’m the only one of the Lord’s prophets left. But Baal has 450 prophets. 23Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves. Let them cut it into pieces. Then let them put it on the wood. But don’t let them set fire to it. I’ll prepare the other bull. I’ll put it on the wood. But I won’t set fire to it. 24Then you pray to your god. And I’ll pray to the Lord. The god who answers by sending fire down is the one and only God.”
Then all the people said, “What you are saying is good.”
25Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls. There are many of you. So prepare your bull first. Pray to your god. But don’t light the fire.” 26So they prepared the bull they had been given.
They prayed to Baal from morning until noon. “Baal! Answer us!” they shouted. But there wasn’t any reply. No one answered. Then they danced around the altar they had made.
27At noon Elijah began to tease them. “Shout louder!” he said. “I’m sure Baal is a god! Perhaps he has too much to think about. Or maybe he has gone to the toilet. Or perhaps he’s away on a trip. Maybe he’s sleeping. You might have to wake him up.” 28So they shouted louder. They cut themselves with swords and spears until their blood flowed. That’s what they usually did when things really looked hopeless. 29It was now past noon. The prophets of Baal continued to prophesy with all their might. They did it until the time came to offer the evening sacrifice. But there wasn’t any reply. No one answered. No one paid any attention.
30Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” So they went to him. He rebuilt the altar of the Lord. It had been torn down. 31Elijah got 12 stones. There was one for each tribe in the family line of Jacob. The Lord’s message had come to Jacob. It had said, “Your name will be Israel.” 32Elijah used the stones to build an altar to honor the Lord. He dug a ditch around it. The ditch was large enough to hold 24 pounds of seeds. 33He arranged the wood for the fire. He cut the bull into pieces. He placed the pieces on the wood. Then he said to some of the people, “Fill four large jars with water. Pour it on the offering and the wood.” So they did.
34“Do it again,” he said. So they did it again.
“Do it a third time,” he ordered. And they did it the third time. 35The water ran down around the altar. It even filled the ditch.
36When it was time to offer the evening sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward. He prayed, “Lord, you are the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel. Today let everyone know that you are God in Israel. Let them know I’m your servant. Let them know I’ve done all these things because you commanded me to. 37Answer me. Lord, answer me. Then these people will know that you are the one and only God. They’ll know that you are turning their hearts back to you again.”
38The fire of the Lord came down. It burned up the sacrifice. It burned up the wood and the stones and the soil. It even dried up the water in the ditch.
39All the people saw it. Then they fell down flat with their faces toward the ground. They cried out, “The Lord is the one and only God! The Lord is the one and only God!”
40Then Elijah commanded them, “Grab the prophets of Baal. Don’t let a single one of them get away!” So they grabbed them. Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley. There he had them put to death.
41Elijah said to Ahab, “Go. Eat and drink. I can hear the sound of a heavy rain.” 42So Ahab went off to eat and drink. But Elijah climbed to the top of Mount Carmel. He bent down toward the ground. Then he put his face between his knees.
43“Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. So he went up and looked.
“I don’t see anything there,” he said.
Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”
44The seventh time the servant said, “I see a cloud. It’s as small as a man’s hand. It’s coming up over the sea.”
Elijah said, “Go to Ahab. Tell him, ‘Tie your chariot to your horse. Go down to Jezreel before the rain stops you.’ ”
45Black clouds filled the sky. The wind came up, and a heavy rain began to fall. Ahab rode off to Jezreel. 46The power of the Lord came on Elijah. He tucked his coat into his belt. And he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.
Profetul Ilie anunță încetarea secetei

Obadia se temea mult de Domnul, 4iar când Izabela i‑a omorât pe profeții Domnului, Obadia a luat o sută de profeți, a ascuns câte cincizeci în câte o peșteră și le‑a asigurat pâine și apă. 5Ahab i‑a zis lui Obadia: „Du‑te prin țară, pe la toate izvoarele de apă și pe la toate uedurile5 Vezi nota de la 2:37.! Poate că vom găsi iarbă ca să păstrăm caii și catârii în viață, astfel încât să nu trebuiască să omorâm vreunul din animale.“ 6Apoi și‑au împărțit între ei teritoriul pe care urmau să‑l străbată: Ahab a plecat singur pe un drum, iar Obadia a plecat singur pe un alt drum. 7În timp ce era pe drum, iată că l‑a întâlnit Ilie.
El l‑a recunoscut, s‑a aruncat cu fața la pământ și l‑a întrebat:
– Tu ești, stăpânul meu Ilie?
8El i‑a răspuns:
– Eu sunt. Du‑te și spune‑i stăpânului tău: „Iată, a venit Ilie.“
9Obadia a zis:
– Cu ce am păcătuit, de‑l dai pe robul tău pe mâna lui Ahab ca să fie omorât? 10Viu este Domnul, Dumnezeul tău, că n‑a rămas niciun neam și niciun regat unde stăpânul meu să nu fi trimis să te caute. Iar când spuneau că nu ești acolo, punea regatul sau neamul acela să jure că nu te‑a găsit. 11Acum tu zici: „Du‑te și spune‑i stăpânului tău: «Iată, a venit Ilie.»“ 12Iar apoi, când voi pleca de la tine, Duhul Domnului te va duce pe nu știu unde! Astfel, dacă mă duc să‑i spun lui Ahab, iar el nu te va găsi, mă va ucide. Însă robul tău se teme de Domnul din tinerețea lui. 13Nu i s‑a spus stăpânului meu ce am făcut când Izabela îi omora pe profeții Domnului? Am ascuns o sută dintre profeții Domnului, câte cincizeci în câte o peșteră, și le‑am asigurat pâine și apă. 14Iar acum tu zici: „Du‑te și spune‑i stăpânului tău: «Iată, a venit Ilie.»“ Mă va ucide!
15Ilie a zis:
– Viu este Domnul Oștirilor15 Ebr.: YHWH Țebaot. Termenul ebraic pentru oștiri se poate referi: (1) la oștirile lui Israel (Ex. 7:4; Ps. 44:9); (2) la corpurile cerești (Gen. 2:1; Deut. 4:19; Is. 40:26); (3) la îngeri (Ios. 5:14; 1 Regi 22:19; Ps. 148:2). Acest titlu face referire, probabil, la suveranitatea lui Dumnezeu peste orice putere din univers [peste tot în carte]., înaintea Căruia stau, că astăzi mă voi înfățișa înaintea lui Ahab.
Ilie pe muntele Carmel
16Obadia a pornit să‑l întâmpine pe Ahab și să‑l înștiințeze. Apoi Ahab s‑a dus să‑l întâlnească pe Ilie.
17Când Ahab l‑a văzut pe Ilie, i‑a zis:
– Tu ești acela care‑l nenorocește pe Israel?
18Ilie a răspuns:
– Nu eu l‑am nenorocit pe Israel, ci tu și familia tatălui tău, prin faptul că ați părăsit poruncile Domnului și te‑ai dus după Baal18 Vezi nota de la 16:31 [peste tot în capitol].. 19Strânge acum tot Israelul la mine, pe muntele Carmel, pe cei patru sute cincizeci de profeți ai lui Baal și pe cei patru sute de profeți ai Așerei19 Vezi nota de la 15:13., care mănâncă la masa Izabelei.
20Ahab a trimis după toți fiii lui Israel și i‑a strâns pe profeți la muntele Carmel.
21Atunci Ilie s‑a apropiat de tot poporul și a zis:
– Până când veți mai șchiopăta între două cârje21 Această expresie idiomatică s‑ar putea reda în limbajul actual prin: Până când veți mai șovăi între două convingeri?? Dacă Domnul este Dumnezeu, urmați‑L pe El, iar dacă Baal este Dumnezeu, urmați‑l pe acesta!
Poporul nu i‑a răspuns nimic.
22Apoi Ilie a zis poporului:
– Eu sunt singurul care am rămas dintre profeții Domnului, iar profeții lui Baal sunt în număr de patru sute cincizeci. 23Să ni se dea doi tauri. Ei să‑și aleagă un taur, să‑l taie în bucăți și să‑l așeze pe lemnele de pe altar, dar să nu‑i dea foc. Iar eu voi pregăti celălalt taur și‑l voi așeza pe lemne, dar nu‑i voi da foc. 24Apoi, voi să chemați numele dumnezeului vostru, iar eu voi chema Numele Domnului. Dumnezeul care va răspunde prin foc, Acela este adevăratul Dumnezeu.
Tot poporul a răspuns și a zis:
– Propunerea este bună.
25Ilie le‑a zis profeților lui Baal: „Alegeți‑vă un taur și pregătiți‑l voi mai întâi, pentru că sunteți mai mulți. Apoi chemați numele dumnezeului vostru, dar să nu aprindeți voi focul.“ 26Ei au luat taurul oferit lor și l‑au pregătit.
Apoi au chemat numele lui Baal de dimineața până la amiază, zicând: „Baal, răspunde‑ne!“ Dar nu s‑a auzit niciun glas. Nimeni n‑a răspuns, deși ei săreau în jurul altarului pe care‑l construiseră.
27La amiază, Ilie și‑a bătut joc de ei, zicând: „Strigați mai tare, doar este dumnezeu! Poate că meditează sau este ocupat sau se află în călătorie! Poate că doarme și se va trezi!“ 28Ei au strigat mai tare și, după obiceiul lor, și‑au făcut tăieturi cu săbiile și cu sulițele până a început să le curgă sângele pe ei. 29După ce a trecut miezul zilei, ei au profețit până când se aducea darul de mâncare, dar nu s‑a auzit niciun glas, niciun răspuns, niciun semn de luare aminte.
30Atunci Ilie a zis întregului popor:
– Apropiați‑vă de mine!
Și tot poporul s‑a apropiat de el. Apoi el a refăcut altarul Domnului, care fusese dărâmat. 31Ilie a luat douăsprezece pietre, după numărul semințiilor urmașilor lui Iacov, cel căruia Domnul îi vorbise, zicând: „Numele tău va fi Israel!“ 32Cu aceste pietre, a zidit un altar în Numele Domnului. Apoi a făcut un șanț în jurul altarului, în care încăpeau două măsuri32 Aproximativ 15 l. de sămânță. 33A aranjat lemnele, a tăiat taurul în bucăți și l‑a așezat pe altar, deasupra lemnelor.
34Apoi le‑a zis:
– Umpleți patru urcioare cu apă și goliți‑le peste arderea‑de‑tot și peste lemne! Faceți lucrul acesta încă o dată! a zis el. Și ei l‑au făcut încă o dată. Faceți lucrul acesta și a treia oară! Iar ei l‑au făcut și a treia oară.
35Apa curgea în jurul altarului și a umplut chiar și șanțul. 36În timp ce se aducea darul de mâncare, profetul Ilie s‑a apropiat și a zis:
„Doamne, Dumnezeul lui Avraam, Isaac și Israel, fă să se cunoască astăzi că Tu ești Dumnezeu în Israel, că eu sunt robul Tău și că am făcut toate aceste lucruri după porunca Ta. 37Răspunde‑mi, Doamne! Răspunde‑mi, ca să cunoască acest popor că Tu, Doamne, ești Dumnezeu și că Tu le întorci inimile spre Tine!“
38Atunci a căzut foc de la Domnul, a mistuit arderea‑de‑tot, lemnele, pietrele și pământul și a înghițit și apa care era în șanț. 39Când a văzut tot poporul lucrul acesta, s‑au aruncat cu fața la pământ și au zis: „Domnul este Dumnezeu! Domnul este Dumnezeu!“
40Ilie le‑a zis:
– Prindeți‑i pe profeții lui Baal! Niciunul dintre ei să nu scape!
I‑au prins, iar Ilie i‑a coborât la râul Chișon și i‑a înjunghiat acolo.
41Apoi Ilie i‑a zis lui Ahab:
– Suie‑te, mănâncă și bea, căci se aude vuietul unei ploi puternice.
42Ahab s‑a suit să mănânce și să bea, dar Ilie a urcat pe vârful Carmelului, s‑a plecat la pământ, și‑a așezat fața pe genunchi 43și i‑a zis slujitorului său:
– Te rog, suie‑te și uită‑te în direcția mării!
El s‑a suit și s‑a uitat.
Apoi a zis:
– Nu este nimic!
Ilie i‑a zis de șapte ori:
– Du‑te din nou!
44A șaptea oară, slujitorul a zis:
– Iată, un nor mic cât o palmă de om se ridică din mare!
Ilie a zis:
– Suie‑te și spune‑i lui Ahab: „Pregătește‑ți carul și coboară‑te, ca să nu te prindă ploaia!“
45Între timp cerul s‑a înnegrit de nori, a început să sufle vântul și s‑a pornit o ploaie puternică. Ahab s‑a urcat în car și s‑a dus la Izreel. 46Mâna Domnului a venit peste Ilie, care și‑a încins coapsele și a alergat înaintea lui Ahab până la intrarea în Izreel.
