Gifts of the Holy Spirit
1Brothers and sisters, I want you to know about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. 2You know that at one time you were unbelievers. You were somehow drawn away to worship statues of gods that couldn’t even speak. 3So I want you to know that no one who is speaking with the help of God’s Spirit says, “May Jesus be cursed.” And without the help of the Holy Spirit no one can say, “Jesus is Lord.”
4There are different kinds of gifts. But they are all given to believers by the same Spirit. 5There are different ways to serve. But they all come from the same Lord. 6There are different ways the Spirit works. But the same God is working in all these ways and in all people.
7The Holy Spirit is given to each of us in a special way. That is for the good of all. 8To some people the Spirit gives a message of wisdom. To others the same Spirit gives a message of knowledge. 9To others the same Spirit gives faith. To others that one Spirit gives gifts of healing. 10To others he gives the power to do miracles. To others he gives the ability to prophesy. To others he gives the ability to tell the spirits apart. To others he gives the ability to speak in different kinds of languages they had not known before. And to still others he gives the ability to explain what was said in those languages. 11All the gifts are produced by one and the same Spirit. He gives gifts to each person, just as he decides.
One Body but Many Parts
12There is one body, but it has many parts. But all its many parts make up one body. It is the same with Christ. 13We were all baptized by one Holy Spirit. And so we are formed into one body. It didn’t matter whether we were Jews or Gentiles, slaves or free people. We were all given the same Spirit to drink. 14So the body is not made up of just one part. It has many parts.
15Suppose the foot says, “I am not a hand. So I don’t belong to the body.” By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. 16And suppose the ear says, “I am not an eye. So I don’t belong to the body.” By saying this, it cannot stop being part of the body. 17If the whole body were an eye, how could it hear? If the whole body were an ear, how could it smell? 18God has placed each part in the body just as he wanted it to be. 19If all the parts were the same, how could there be a body? 20As it is, there are many parts. But there is only one body.
21The eye can’t say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” 22In fact, it is just the opposite. The parts of the body that seem to be weaker are the ones we can’t do without. 23The parts that we think are less important we treat with special honor. The private parts aren’t shown. But they are treated with special care. 24The parts that can be shown don’t need special care. But God has put together all the parts of the body. And he has given more honor to the parts that didn’t have any. 25In that way, the parts of the body will not take sides. All of them will take care of one another. 26If one part suffers, every part suffers with it. If one part is honored, every part shares in its joy.
27You are the body of Christ. Each one of you is a part of it. 28First, God has placed apostles in the church. Second, he has placed prophets in the church. Third, he has placed teachers in the church. Then he has given to the church miracles and gifts of healing. He also has given the gift of helping others and the gift of guiding the church. God also has given the gift of speaking in different kinds of languages. 29Is everyone an apostle? Is everyone a prophet? Is everyone a teacher? Do all work miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in languages they had not known before? Do all explain what is said in those languages? 31But above all, you should want the more important gifts.
Love Is Necessary
But now I will show you the best way of all.

2Souvenez-vous comment, lorsque vous étiez encore païens, vous vous laissiez entraîner aveuglément vers des idoles muettes ! 3C’est pourquoi je vous le déclare, si un homme dit : « Maudit soit Jésus », ce n’est pas l’Esprit de Dieu qui le pousse à parler ainsi. Mais personne ne peut affirmer : « Jésus est Seigneur », s’il n’y est pas conduit par l’Esprit Saint.
4Il y a toutes sortes de dons de la grâce, mais c’est le même Esprit. 5Il y a toutes sortes de services, mais c’est le même Seigneur. 6Il y a toutes sortes d’activités, mais c’est le même Dieu ; et c’est lui qui met tout cela en action chez tous.
7A chacun, l’Esprit se manifeste d’une façon particulière, en vue du bien commun. 8L’Esprit donne à l’un une parole de sagesse ; à un autre, le même Esprit donne une parole de connaissance. 9L’un reçoit par l’Esprit la foi d’une manière particulière ; à un autre, par ce seul et même Esprit des dons de la grâce sous forme de guérisons, 10à un autre, des actes miraculeux ; à un autre, il est donné de prophétiser et à un autre, de distinguer entre les esprits12.10 Il s’agit certainement de discerner quel esprit anime un prophète ou un enseignant, si c’est l’Esprit de Dieu, ou bien un esprit qui fait prononcer de fausses prophéties ou professer de fausses doctrines (voir 1 R 22 ; 1 Jn 4.1-6).. A l’un est donné de s’exprimer dans des langues inconnues, à un autre d’interpréter ces langues. 11Mais tout cela est l’œuvre d’un seul et même Esprit qui distribue son activité à chacun de manière particulière comme il veut.
12Le corps humain forme un tout, et pourtant il a beaucoup d’organes. Et tous ces organes, dans leur multiplicité, ne constituent qu’un seul corps. Il en va de même pour ceux qui sont unis à Christ. 13En effet, nous avons tous été baptisés dans un seul et même Esprit pour former un seul corps, que nous soyons Juifs ou non-Juifs, esclaves ou hommes libres. C’est de ce seul et même Esprit que nous avons tous reçu à boire.
14Un corps n’est pas composé d’un membre ou d’un organe unique, mais de plusieurs. 15Si le pied disait : « Puisque je ne suis pas une main, je ne fais pas partie du corps », n’en ferait-il pas partie pour autant ? 16Et si l’oreille se mettait à dire : « Puisque je ne suis pas un œil, je ne fais pas partie du corps », cesserait-elle d’en faire partie pour autant ? 17Si tout le corps était un œil, comment ce corps entendrait-il ? Et si tout le corps se réduisait à une oreille, où serait l’odorat ?
18Dieu a disposé chaque organe dans le corps, chacun avec sa particularité, comme il l’a trouvé bon. 19Car s’il n’y avait en tout et pour tout qu’un seul organe, serait-ce un corps ?
20En fait, les organes sont nombreux, mais ils forment ensemble un seul corps. 21C’est pourquoi l’œil ne saurait dire à la main : « Je n’ai pas besoin de toi », ni la tête aux pieds : « Je peux très bien me passer de vous. »
22Au contraire, les parties du corps qui nous paraissent insignifiantes sont particulièrement nécessaires. 23Celles que nous estimons le moins sont celles dont nous prenons le plus grand soin, et celles dont il n’est pas décent de parler, nous les traitons avec des égards particuliers 24dont les autres n’ont guère besoin. Dieu a disposé les différentes parties de notre corps de manière à ce qu’on honore davantage celles qui manquent naturellement d’honneur. 25Il voulait par là éviter toute division dans le corps et faire que chacun des membres ait le même souci des autres.
26Un membre souffre-t-il ? Tous les autres souffrent avec lui. Un membre est-il à l’honneur ? Tous les autres partagent sa joie. 27Or vous, vous êtes le corps de Christ et chacun de vous en particulier en est un membre.
28C’est ainsi que Dieu a établi dans l’Eglise, premièrement des apôtres, deuxièmement des prophètes, troisièmement des enseignants ; puis viennent les miracles, les dons de la grâce sous la forme de guérisons, l’aide, la direction d’Eglise, les langues inconnues. 29Tous sont-ils apôtres ? Tous sont-ils prophètes ? Tous sont-ils enseignants ? Tous font-ils des miracles ? 30Tous ont-ils des dons de la grâce sous forme de guérisons ? Tous parlent-ils dans des langues inconnues ? Tous interprètent-ils ?
