1No quiero que desconozcan, hermanos, que nuestros antepasados estuvieron todos bajo la nube y que todos atravesaron el mar. 2Todos ellos fueron bautizados en la nube y en el mar para unirse a Moisés. 3Todos también comieron el mismo alimento espiritual 4y tomaron la misma bebida espiritual, pues bebían de la roca espiritual que los acompañaba, y la roca era Cristo. 5Sin embargo, la mayoría de ellos no agradaron a Dios y sus cuerpos quedaron tendidos en el desierto.
6Todo eso sucedió para servirnos de ejemplo, a fin de que no nos apasionemos por lo malo, como lo hicieron ellos. 7No sean idólatras como lo fueron algunos de ellos, según está escrito: «Se sentó el pueblo a comer y a beber, y se levantó para entregarse al desenfreno».10:7 Éx 32:6. 8No cometamos inmoralidad sexual como algunos lo hicieron, por lo que en un solo día perecieron veintitrés mil. 9Tampoco pongamos a prueba a Cristo como lo hicieron algunos y murieron víctimas de las serpientes. 10Tampoco murmuren contra Dios como lo hicieron algunos y sucumbieron a manos del exterminador.
11Todo eso les sucedió para servir de ejemplo y quedó escrito para advertencia nuestra, pues a nosotros nos ha llegado el fin de los tiempos. 12Por lo tanto, si alguien piensa que está firme, tenga cuidado de no caer. 13Ustedes no han sufrido ninguna tentación que no sea común al género humano. Pero Dios es fiel y no permitirá que ustedes sean tentados más allá de lo que puedan aguantar. Más bien, cuando llegue la tentación, él les dará también una salida a fin de que puedan resistir.
Las fiestas idólatras y la Cena del Señor
14Por tanto, mis queridos hermanos, huyan de la idolatría. 15Me dirijo a personas sensatas; juzguen ustedes mismos lo que digo. 16Esa copa de bendición por la cual damos gracias,10:16 por la cual damos gracias. Lit. que bendecimos. ¿no significa que entramos en comunión con la sangre de Cristo? Ese pan que partimos, ¿no significa que entramos en comunión con el cuerpo de Cristo? 17Hay un solo pan del cual todos participamos; por eso, aunque somos muchos, formamos un solo cuerpo.
18Consideren al pueblo de Israel: ¿No entran en comunión con el altar los que comen de lo sacrificado? 19¿Qué quiero decir con esta comparación? ¿Que el sacrificio que los no judíos ofrecen a los ídolos sea algo o que el ídolo mismo sea algo? 20No, sino que cuando ellos ofrecen sacrificios, lo hacen para los demonios, no para Dios; y no quiero que ustedes entren en comunión con los demonios. 21No pueden beber de la copa del Señor y también de la copa de los demonios; no pueden participar de la mesa del Señor y también de la mesa de los demonios. 22¿O vamos a provocar celos al Señor? ¿Somos acaso más fuertes que él?
La libertad del creyente
23«Todo está permitido», pero no todo es provechoso. «Todo está permitido», pero no todo es constructivo. 24Que nadie busque sus propios intereses, sino los del prójimo.
25Coman de todo lo que se vende en la carnicería, sin preguntar nada por motivos de conciencia, 26porque «del Señor es la tierra y todo cuanto hay en ella».10:26 Sal 24:1.
27Si algún incrédulo los invita a comer y ustedes aceptan la invitación, coman de todo lo que sirvan sin preguntar nada por motivos de conciencia. 28Ahora bien, si alguien les dice: «Esto ha sido ofrecido en sacrificio a los ídolos», entonces no lo coman, por consideración al que se lo mencionó y por motivos de conciencia.10:28 conciencia. Var. conciencia, porque «del Señor es la tierra y todo cuanto hay en ella». 29Me refiero a la conciencia del otro, no a la de ustedes. ¿Por qué se ha de juzgar mi libertad de acuerdo con la conciencia ajena? 30Si con gratitud participo de la comida, ¿me van a condenar por comer algo por lo cual doy gracias a Dios?
31En conclusión, ya sea que coman o beban o hagan cualquier otra cosa, háganlo todo para la gloria de Dios. 32No hagan tropezar a nadie, ni a judíos, ni a los que no son judíos, ni a la iglesia de Dios. 33Hagan como yo, que procuro agradar a todos en todo. No busco mis propios intereses, sino los de los demás, para que sean salvos.
1Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; 3And did all eat the same spiritual meat; 4And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ. 5But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness. 6Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted. 7Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play. 8Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand. 9Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents. 10Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer. 11Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come. 12Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall. 13There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
14Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry. 15I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say. 16The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ? 17For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread. 18Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar? 19What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing? 20But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils. 21Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils. 22Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he? 23All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not. 24Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth. 25Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake: 26For the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof. 27If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake. 28But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord’s, and the fulness thereof: 29Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man’s conscience? 30For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks? 31Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God. 32Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God: 33Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
