1ከፀሓይ በታች ሌላ ክፉ ነገር አየሁ፤ እርሱም ለሰዎች እጅግ የሚከብድ ነው፤ 2ሰው ልቡ የሚሻውን እንዳያጣ፣ እግዚአብሔር ባለጠግነትን፣ ሀብትንና ክብርን ይሰጠዋል፤ እግዚአብሔር ግን እንዲደሰትበት ሥልጣን አልሰጠውም፤ ይልቁን ባዕድ ይደሰትበታል። ይህም ከንቱ፣ እጅግም ክፉ ነገር ነው።
3አንድ ሰው መቶ ልጅ ሊኖረውና ብዙ ዓመት ሊኖር ይችላል፤ ምንም ያህል ይኑር፣ በሀብቱ ደስ ካልተሰኘበትና በአግባብ ካልተቀበረ፣ ከእርሱ ይልቅ ጭንጋፍ ይሻላል እላለሁ፤ 4ምክንያቱም በከንቱ ይመጣል፤ በጨለማም ይሄዳል፤ ስሙም በጨለማ ተሸፍኗል። 5ፀሓይን ባያይና ምንም ነገር ባያውቅ እንኳ፣ እርሱ ከዚያ ሰው ይልቅ ዕረፍት አለው፤ 6ሁለት ጊዜ ሺሕ ዓመት ቢኖር፣ ነገር ግን በሀብቱ ደስ ባይሰኝበት፣ ሁሉ ወደዚያ ስፍራ የሚሄድ አይደለምን?
7የሰው ጥረት ሁሉ ለአፉ ነው፤
ፍላጎቱ ግን ፈጽሞ አይረካም።
8ጠቢብ ከሞኝ ይልቅ ምን ብልጫ አለው?
ድኻስ በሌሎች ፊት እንዴት እንደሚኖር በማወቁ፣
ትርፉ ምንድን ነው?
9በምኞት ከመቅበዝበዝ፣
በዐይን ማየት ይሻላል፤
ይህም ደግሞ ከንቱ፣
ነፋስንም እንደ መከተል ነው።
10አሁን ያለው ሁሉ አስቀድሞ ስም የተሰጠው ነው፤
ሰው የሚሆነውም አስቀድሞ የታወቀ ነው፤
ከራሱ ይልቅ ከሚበረታ ጋር፣
ማንም አይታገልም።
11ቃል በበዛ ቍጥር፤
ከንቱነት ይበዛል፤
ይህ ታዲያ ለሰው ምን ይጠቅማል?
12ሰው በሕይወት ሳለ፣ እንደ ጥላ በሚያልፉት ጥቂትና ከንቱ በሆኑት ቀኖቹ፣ ለሰው መልካም የሆነውን የሚያውቅ ማን ነው? እርሱ ከሄደ በኋላስ ከፀሓይ በታች የሚሆነውን ማን ሊነግረው ይችላል?
1There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men: 2A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.
3¶ If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he. 4For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. 5Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.
6¶ Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?
