유다와 다말
1그 후에 유다는 형제들을 떠나 아둘람 사람 히라에게 가서 그와 함 께 머물러 있었다.
2거기서 유다는 가나안 사람 수아의 딸을 만나 그녀와 결혼하였다.
3그녀가 임신하여 아들을 낳자 유다는 그 이름을 엘이라고 지었다.
4그녀는 다시 임신하여 아들을 낳고 그 이름을 오난이라고 하였으며
5또 다른 아들을 낳아 그 이름을 셀라라고 하였다. 그녀가 셀라를 낳을 때 유다는 거십에 있었다.
6유다는 장남 엘을 다말이라는 여자와 결혼시켰는데
7엘의 행위가 여호와께서 보시기에 악하므로 여호와께서 그를 죽이셨다.
8그래서 유다는 오난에게 “네 형수와 잠자리를 같이하여 네 형을 위해 자식을 낳아 주는 시동생의 의무를 다하라” 하였다.
9그러나 오난은 아이를 낳아도 자기 자식이 되지 못할 것을 알고 자식을 낳아 주지 않기 위해서 형수와 관계를 가질 때마다 38:9 또는 ‘땅에’잠자리에 사정하였다.
10그가 행한 일이 여호와께서 보시기에 악하므로 여호와께서는 그도 죽이셨다.
11이때 유다는 며느리 다말에게 “네 친정 집으로 가서 내 아들 셀라가 성장할 때까지 그대로 지내라” 하였다. 그가 이렇게 말한 것은 셀라도 그 형들처럼 죽을지 모른다는 두려움 때문이었다. 그래서 다말은 친정에 가서 살았다.
12얼마 후에 수아의 딸인 유다의 아내가 죽었다. 유다는 어느 정도 마음의 위안을 되찾은 다음에 친구인 아둘람 사람 히라와 함께 자기 양떼의 털 깎는 자들이 있는 딤나로 올라갔다.
13이때 다말은 자기 시아버지가 양털을 깎으려고 딤나로 올라오고 있다는 말을 듣게 되었다.
14그래서 그녀는 과부의 옷을 벗고 면사포로 얼굴을 가린 채 딤나로 가는 길 옆 에나임 입구에 앉아 있었다. 이것은 셀라가 성장했는데도 그와 결혼시켜 주지 않았기 때문이었다.
15그녀가 얼굴을 가렸으므로 유다는 그녀를 창녀로 생각하였다.
16유다는 그녀가 자기 며느리인 줄도 모르고 길 옆에 앉아 있는 그녀에게 다가가서 말하였다. “너와 쉬었다 가겠다.” “얼마나 주시겠습니까?”
17“염소 새끼 한 마리를 보내 주겠다.” “좋습니다. 그 염소를 보낼 때까지 담보물을 잡히시겠습니까?”
18“담보물로 무엇을 주면 되겠느냐?” “끈 달린 당신의 그 도장과 당신이 들고 있는 그 지팡이를 나에게 주십시오.” 그래서 유다는 그것들을 주고 그녀와 함께 잠자리에 들었으며 그녀는 그를 통해서 임신하게 되었다.
19그러고서 다말은 집으로 가서 면사포를 벗고 과부의 옷을 다시 입었다.
20유다는 자기 친구인 아둘람 사람 히라에게 부탁하여 염소 새끼를 그 여자에게 보내고 그가 담보물로 맡긴 물건을 찾아오라고 하였다. 그러나 그는 그 여자를 찾지 못하였다.
21그가 에나임에 있는 사람들에게 “길가에 있던 창녀가 어디 있습니까?” 하고 묻자 그들이 “이 곳에는 창녀가 없습니다” 하고 대답하였다.
22그래서 그는 유다에게 돌아가서 말하였다. “그녀를 찾지 못했네. 그 곳 사람들도 거기에는 창녀가 없다고 하더군.”
23“그 여자가 그 물건을 가지도록 내버려 두게. 그렇지 않으면 우리가 웃음거리가 되고 말겠네. 어쨌든 나는 그 여자에게 염소 새끼를 보냈으나 자네가 그녀를 찾지 못했을 뿐이야.”
24석 달쯤 후에 어떤 사람이 유다에게 “당신의 며느리 다말이 창녀짓을 하여 임신하였소” 하자 유다가 “그 여자를 끌어내어 불에 태워 죽이시오” 하였다.
25그녀는 끌려나가면서 자기 시아버지에게 이런 전갈을 보냈다. “나는 이 물건 임자 때문에 임신하게 되었습니다. 이 끈 달린 도장과 지팡이가 누구의 것인지 한번 보십시오.”
26유다는 그것들을 알아보고 “그녀가 나보다 옳다. 내가 그녀를 내 아들 셀라에게 주지 않았다” 하고 다시는 그녀와 잠자리를 같이하지 않았다.
27그녀가 해산할 때가 되었을 때 보니 쌍둥이를 배었는데
28한 아이가 먼저 손 하나를 불쑥 내밀었다. 그래서 산파가 그 손을 붙잡아 손목에 붉은 실을 잡아매고 “이 아이가 먼저 나왔다” 하고 말하였다.
29그러나 그가 도로 손을 안으로 들이고 다른 아이가 나왔다. 그때 산파가 “네가 어째서 비집고 나오느냐?” 하고 소리쳤다. 그래서 그 이름을 38:29 ‘비집고나온다’ 는뜻.‘베레스’ 라고 불렀다.
30그러고서 손목에 붉은 실을 맨 아이가 나오자 그 이름을 38:30 ‘붉다’ 는뜻.‘세라’ 라고 불렀다.
Judah and Tamar
1At that time, Judah left his brothers. He went down to stay with a man named Hirah from the town of Adullam. 2There Judah met the daughter of a man from Canaan. His name was Shua. Judah married her and slept with her. 3She became pregnant and had a son. They named him Er. 4She became pregnant again and had another son. She named him Onan. 5She had still another son. She named him Shelah. He was born at Kezib.
6Judah got a wife for his oldest son Er. Her name was Tamar. 7But Judah’s oldest son Er was evil in the Lord’s eyes. So the Lord put him to death.
8Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife. After all, you are her brother-in-law. So carry out your duty to her. Provide children for your brother.” 9But Onan knew that the children wouldn’t belong to him. So every time he slept with his brother’s wife, he spilled his semen on the ground. He did it so he wouldn’t provide children for his brother. 10What he did was evil in the Lord’s eyes. So the Lord put him to death also.
11Then Judah spoke to his daughter-in-law Tamar. He said, “Live as a widow in your father’s home. Wait there until my son Shelah grows up.” Judah was thinking, “Shelah might die too, just like his brothers.” So Tamar went to live in her father’s home.
12After a long time Judah’s wife died. She was the daughter of Shua. When Judah got over his sadness, he went up to Timnah. His friend Hirah from Adullam went with him. Men were clipping the wool from Judah’s sheep at Timnah.
13Tamar was told, “Your father-in-law is on his way to Timnah to clip the wool from his sheep.” 14So she took off her widow’s clothes. She covered her face with a veil so people wouldn’t know who she was. Then she sat down at the entrance to Enaim. Enaim is on the road to Timnah. Tamar knew that Shelah had grown up. But she hadn’t been given to him as his wife.
15Judah saw her. He thought she was a prostitute because she had covered her face with a veil. 16He didn’t realize that she was his daughter-in-law. He went over to her by the side of the road. He said, “Come. Let me sleep with you.”
“What will you give me to sleep with you?” she asked.
17“I’ll send you a young goat from my flock,” he said.
“Will you give me something that belongs to you?” she asked. “I’ll keep it until you send the goat.”
18He said, “What should I give you?”
“Give me your official seal and the string that it hangs from,” she answered. “And give me your walking stick.” So he gave them to her. Then he slept with her. And she became pregnant by him. 19After she left, she took off her veil. She put on her widow’s clothes again.
20Judah sent his friend Hirah with the young goat he had promised. He wanted to get back what he had given to the woman. But his friend Hirah couldn’t find her. 21He asked the men who lived at Enaim, “Where’s the temple prostitute? She used to sit beside the road here.”
“There hasn’t been any temple prostitute here,” they said.
22So Hirah went back to Judah. He said, “I couldn’t find her. Besides, the men who lived there didn’t know anything about her. They said, ‘There hasn’t been any temple prostitute here.’ ”
23Then Judah said, “Let her keep what she has. I don’t want people making fun of us. After all, I did send her this young goat. We can’t help it if you couldn’t find her.”
24About three months later people brought word to Judah. They said, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar is guilty of being a prostitute. Now she’s pregnant.”
Judah said, “Bring her out! Have her burned to death!”
25As Tamar was being brought out, she sent a message to her father-in-law. She said, “I am pregnant by the man who owns these.” She continued, “Do you recognize this seal and string and walking stick? Do you know who they belong to?”
26Judah recognized them. He said, “She’s a better person than I am. I should have given her to my son Shelah, but I didn’t.” Judah never slept with Tamar again.
27The time came for Tamar to have her baby. There were twin boys inside her. 28As the babies were being born, one of them stuck out his hand. So the woman helping Tamar took a bright red thread. The woman tied it on the baby’s wrist. She said, “This one came out first.” 29But he pulled his hand back, and his brother came out first instead. She said, “Just look at how you have forced your way out!” So he was called Perez. 30Then his brother, who had the red thread on his wrist, came out. So he was named Zerah.
