1“은은 채굴하는 광산이 있고 금은 제련하는 제련소가 있으며
2철은 땅에서 파내고 구리는 광석을 녹여서 얻는다.
3사람들은 광맥을 찾기 위해 땅을 깊이 파고 아주 어두운 곳을 조사한다.
4그들은 사람이 사는 곳에서 멀리 떨어져 인적이 끊어진 곳에 갱도를 깊이 파고 갱 속에서 밧줄로 몸을 묶어 흔들거리면서 외롭게 일하고 있다.
5지면에서는 먹을 것이 나오지만 지하에서는 땅이 불로 뒤집힌다.
6광석에는 청옥도 있고 사금도 있다.
7그런 보화를 캐내는 길은 솔개도 모르고 매의 눈도 그것을 보지 못하며
8사자나 다른 사나운 짐승도 밟아 보지 못한다.
9사람들은 아주 단단한 바위를 쪼개고 산을 파서 그 뿌리까지 드러내며
10바위를 뚫어 굴을 내고 보석을 찾아내며
1128:11 또는 ‘시냇물을 막아’강의 자원을 찾아서 감추인 것을 드러낸다.
12“그러나 지혜는 어디서 찾을 수 있으며 깊은 깨달음은 어디서 얻을 수 있는가?
13이 세상에서는 참 지혜를 찾을 수 없으므로 사람들이 그 가치를 모른다.
14대양이 ‘그것은 내 속에 없다’ 고 말하며 바다도 ‘그것은 나에게 없다’ 고 말한다.
15그것은 금이나 은으로 살 수 없고
16청옥과 마노와 같은 값진 보석으로도 그 값을 치를 수가 없다.
17지혜는 황금이나 유리와 비교가 안 되고 순금으로 장식한 보석으로도 살 수 없으며
18산호나 수정이나 홍옥도 그 가치에 미치지 못하며
1928:19 원문에는 ‘구스’에티오피아의 황옥이나 순금도 지혜의 값을 따를 수 없다.
20그렇다면 그 지혜를 어디서 얻을 수 있는가?
21그것은 모든 생물의 눈에 숨겨져 있고 공중의 새도 그것을 보지 못하며
22멸망과 사망까지도 그것을 소문으로만 들었을 뿐이라고 말한다.
23“하나님만이 지혜가 있는 곳을 아신다.
24이것은 그가 땅 끝까지 살피시며 천하에 있는 모든 것을 보고 계시기 때문이다.
25하나님이 바람의 힘을 조절하시고 물의 분량을 측정하시며
26비의 법칙과 번개가 다니는 길을 정하셨을 때에
27지혜를 보시고 28:27 또는 ‘선포하시며 굳게 세우시며 궁구하셨고’그 가치를 시험하여 인정하셨다.
28그러고서 하나님은 모든 인류에게 이렇게 말씀하셨다. ‘나 여호와를 두려운 마음으로 섬기는 것이 참 지혜요 악에서 떠나는 것이 진정한 깨달음이다.’ ”
Interlude: where wisdom is found
1There is a mine for silver
and a place where gold is refined.
2Iron is taken from the earth,
and copper is smelted from ore.
3Mortals put an end to the darkness;
they search out the farthest recesses
for ore in the blackest darkness.
4Far from human dwellings they cut a shaft,
in places untouched by human feet;
far from other people they dangle and sway.
5The earth, from which food comes,
is transformed below as by fire;
6lapis lazuli comes from its rocks,
and its dust contains nuggets of gold.
7No bird of prey knows that hidden path,
no falcon’s eye has seen it.
8Proud beasts do not set foot on it,
and no lion prowls there.
9People assault the flinty rock with their hands
and lay bare the roots of the mountains.
10They tunnel through the rock;
their eyes see all its treasures.
11They search28:11 Septuagint, Aquila and Vulgate; Hebrew They dam up the sources of the rivers
and bring hidden things to light.
12But where can wisdom be found?
Where does understanding dwell?
13No mortal comprehends its worth;
it cannot be found in the land of the living.
14The deep says, ‘It is not in me’;
the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’
15It cannot be bought with the finest gold,
nor can its price be weighed out in silver.
16It cannot be bought with the gold of Ophir,
with precious onyx or lapis lazuli.
17Neither gold nor crystal can compare with it,
nor can it be had for jewels of gold.
18Coral and jasper are not worthy of mention;
the price of wisdom is beyond rubies.
19The topaz of Cush cannot compare with it;
it cannot be bought with pure gold.
20Where then does wisdom come from?
Where does understanding dwell?
21It is hidden from the eyes of every living thing,
concealed even from the birds in the sky.
22Destruction28:22 Hebrew Abaddon and Death say,
‘Only a rumour of it has reached our ears.’
23God understands the way to it
and he alone knows where it dwells,
24for he views the ends of the earth
and sees everything under the heavens.
25When he established the force of the wind
and measured out the waters,
26when he made a decree for the rain
and a path for the thunderstorm,
27then he looked at wisdom and appraised it;
he confirmed it and tested it.
28And he said to the human race,
‘The fear of the Lord – that is wisdom,
and to shun evil is understanding.’
