1그러나 다시는 내가 슬픈 마음으로 여러분을 방문하지 않기로 결심했습니다.
2내가 여러분을 슬프게 한다면 누가 나를 기쁘게 하겠습니까? 나를 기쁘게 할 사람은 내가 슬프게 했던 여러분밖에 없습니다.
3내가 그 편지를 쓴 것은 내가 갈 때 당연히 나를 기쁘게 해야 할 사람들에게서 슬픔을 얻지 않도록 하기 위해서였습니다. 나의 기쁨은 여러분 모두의 기쁨이 되리라고 확신했기 때문입니다.
4내가 근심하고 몹시 괴로워하며 많은 눈물로 그 편지를 쓴 것은 여러분을 슬프게 하기 위해서가 아니라 여러분에 대한 나의 넘치는 사랑을 여러분이 알도록 하기 위한 것이었습니다.
5누가 문제를 일으켰다면 그는 나를 슬프게 한 것이 아니라 어떤 면에서는 여러분 모두를 슬프게 한 것입니다. 너무 지나친 말이 될까 봐 이 정도로 말합니다.
6많은 사람들이 이미 가한 그 벌로도 그에게는 충분합니다.
7이제 여러분은 그를 용서하고 위로하여 그가 너무 슬퍼하다가 낙심하지 않도록 하십시오.
8그러므로 그에게 사랑을 베풀어 줄 것을 부탁합니다.
그리스도의 향기
9나는 여러분이 모든 일에 순종하는가를 알아보려고 그 편지를 썼던 것입니다.
10만일 여러분이 어떤 사람을 용서하면 나도 그를 용서합니다. 그리고 내가 용서할 일이 있어서 어떤 일을 용서했다면 그것은 여러분을 위해 그리스도 앞에서 한 것입니다.
11이것은 우리가 사탄에게 이용당하지 않게 하기 위한 것입니다. 우리는 사탄의 책략을 다 알고 있습니다.
12내가 그리스도의 기쁜 소식을 전하려고 드로아에 갔을 때 주님을 위해서 일할 좋은 기회가 있었습니다.
13그러나 내 형제 디도를 만나지 못하여 편치 못한 마음으로 그들과 작별하고 마케도니아로 갔습니다.
14항상 우리를 그리스도 안에서 이기게 하시고 우리를 통해 그리스도를 아는 지식을 곳곳에 향기처럼 퍼지게 하시는 하나님께 감사를 드립니다.
15하나님에게는 우리가 구원 얻는 사람들에게나 멸망하는 사람들에게 그리스도의 향기입니다.
16멸망받을 사람에게는 죽음에 이르게 하는 냄새이며 구원받을 사람에게는 생명에 이르게 하는 향기입니다. 그렇다면 누가 이런 향기가 되겠습니까?
17우리는 다른 많은 사람들과 같이 하나님의 말씀을 장사꾼처럼 팔지 않고 하나님이 보낸 사람들답게 하나님 앞과 그리스도 안에서 진실하게 증거하고 있습니다.
1So I made up my mind that I would not make another painful visit to you. 2If I make you sad, who is going to make me glad? Only you, the people I made sad. 3What I wrote to you I wrote for a special reason. When I came, I didn’t want to be troubled by those who should make me glad. I was sure that all of you would share my joy. 4I was very troubled when I wrote to you. My heart was sad. My eyes were full of tears. I didn’t want to make you sad. I wanted to let you know that I love you very deeply.
Forgive Those Who Make You Sad
5Suppose someone has made us sad. In some ways, he hasn’t made me sad so much as he has made all of you sad. But I don’t want to put this too strongly. 6He has been punished because most of you decided he should be. This punishment is enough. 7Now you should forgive him and comfort him. Then he won’t be sad more than he can stand. 8So I’m asking you to tell him again that you still love him. 9I wrote to you for another special reason. I wanted to see if you could stand the test. I wanted to see if you could obey everything asked of you. 10Anyone you forgive I also forgive. Was there anything to forgive? If so, I have forgiven it for your benefit, knowing that Christ is watching. 11We don’t want Satan to outsmart us. We know how he does his evil work.
Serving Under the New Covenant
12I went to Troas to preach the good news about Christ. There I found that the Lord had opened a door of opportunity for me. 13But I still had no peace of mind. I couldn’t find my brother Titus there. So I said goodbye to the believers at Troas and went on to Macedonia.
14Give thanks to God! He always leads us as if we were prisoners in Christ’s victory parade. Through us, God spreads the knowledge of Christ everywhere like perfume. 15God considers us to be the pleasing smell that Christ is spreading. He is spreading it among people who are being saved and people who are dying. 16To those who are dying, we are the smell of death. To those who are being saved, we are the perfume of life. Who is able to do this work? 17Unlike many people, we aren’t selling God’s word to make money. In fact, it is just the opposite. Because of Christ we speak honestly before God. We speak like people God has sent.
