7Hold thy peace at the presence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a sacrifice, he hath bid his guests.1.7 bid: Heb. sanctified, or, prepared 8And it shall come to pass in the day of the LORD’s sacrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king’s children, and all such as are clothed with strange apparel.1.8 punish: Heb. visit upon 9In the same day also will I punish all those that leap on the threshold, which fill their masters’ houses with violence and deceit. 10And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and an howling from the second, and a great crashing from the hills. 11Howl, ye inhabitants of Maktesh, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that bear silver are cut off. 12And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with candles, and punish the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.1.12 settled: Heb. curded, or, thickened 13Therefore their goods shall become a booty, and their houses a desolation: they shall also build houses, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.
14The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly. 15That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, 16A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers. 17And I will bring distress upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have sinned against the LORD: and their blood shall be poured out as dust, and their flesh as the dung. 18Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’s wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

1Estas são as palavras do Senhor que foram transmitidas a Sofonias, filho de Cuchi, neto de Gedalias, bisneto de Amarias e trineto de Ezequias, durante o reinado de Josias, filho de Amom, rei de Judá.
2“Consumirei tudo na vossa terra, diz o Senhor. Arrasarei completamente tudo. 3Tanto homens como animais serão liquidados até ao último. Os seres vivos, mais os ídolos que eles adoram, tudo será varrido. Até os pássaros nos ares e os peixes nas águas, tudo perecerá!
Ameaça contra Judá
4Esmagarei Judá e Jerusalém sob o meu punho fechado; destruirei o resto das gentes que adoram Baal. Porei um fim à sua idolatria e aos sacerdotes idólatras, de forma a que até a lembrança deles desapareça. 5Sobem aos telhados e inclinam-se perante o Sol, a Lua e as estrelas. Dizem que seguem o Senhor, mas prestam culto a Moloque ao mesmo tempo! 6Destruí-los-ei! Liquidarei os que começaram por adorar o Senhor e agora o abandonaram! Aqueles que nunca o amaram, que nunca quiseram saber dele!”
7Fiquem em silêncio perante o Senhor Deus, porque o terrível dia do Senhor está a chegar. Ele já preparou um sacrifício e consagrou os seus convidados.
8“Nesse dia de juízo, castigarei os governantes e os nobres de Judá e todos aqueles que se vestem à maneira pagã. 9Sim, castigarei os que seguem os costumes pagãos, os que roubam e matam para encherem as casas dos seus senhores com lucros fraudulentos obtidos pela violência! 10Começará a ouvir-se um grito de alarme, desde a Porta dos Peixes, que se aproximará cada vez mais. Haverá gente a chorar no bairro de Misné e um grande ruído sobre as colinas.
11Uivem de tristeza, vocês, os que vivem no bairro do comércio! Todos os vossos vorazes comerciantes serão arruinados e os cambistas desaparecerão! 12Procurarei minuciosamente, em todos os recantos escuros de Jerusalém, para punir aqueles que se sentam contentes com os seus pecados e que alegam: ‘Ora, o Senhor não intervém! Ele não faz o bem nem o mal!’ 13Todos esses terão as suas riquezas saqueadas pelo inimigo, as suas casas devassadas; construíram-nas, mas não habitarão nelas; plantaram vinhas, mas não provarão o vinho.”
O dia do juízo do Senhor
14Esse grande e terrível dia do Senhor está próximo, está a chegar rapidamente. Será um dia em que os mais valentes chorarão amargamente. 15É o dia em que se derrama a ira de Deus; uma ocasião de terrível pesar e angústia, ruína e desolação, escuridão e nuvens negras. 16A trombeta soará, a batalha rugirá. Cairão as muralhas mais fortes e as construções mais bem edificadas.
17“Então lançarei os homens na miséria e caminharão como cegos, procurando o caminho certo, porque pecaram contra o Senhor. É por isso que o vosso sangue será derramado sobre o pó da terra e os vossos corpos jazerão no chão como estrume. 18A vossa prata e o vosso ouro não servirão de nada nesse dia do julgamento do Senhor. Não poderão resgatar-vos com isso.”
Toda a Terra será devorada pelo fogo do seu zelo. Em breve todo os habitantes passarão por isso.
