A Psalm of Asaph.
1Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.73.1 of: or, for73.1 Truly: or, Yet73.1 of…: Heb. clean of heart
2But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.
3For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
4For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.73.4 firm: Heb. fat
5They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.73.5 in…: Heb. in the trouble of other men73.5 like: Heb. with
6Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.

8They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.
9They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.
10Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.
11And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?
12Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.
13Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.
14For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.73.14 chastened: Heb. my chastisement was
15If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.
16When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;73.16 too…: Heb. labour in mine eyes
17Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.
18Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.
19How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.
20As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.
21Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
22So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.73.22 ignorant: Heb. I knew not73.22 before: Heb. with
23Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand.
24Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory.
25Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.
26My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.73.26 strength: Heb. rock
27For, lo, they that are far from thee shall perish: thou hast destroyed all them that go a whoring from thee.
28But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.

Salmo 73
Salmo de Asafe.
1Deus é verdadeiramente bom para com Israel,
para com todos os que têm um coração puro.
2Quanto a mim,
por pouco me ia desviando do caminho reto;
quase escorregava.
3Pois tive inveja do bem-estar dos soberbos
e dos maus.
4Eles não têm medo de morrer;
o seu poder é garantido.
5Não se veem metidos em dificuldades,
como toda a gente,
nem rodeados de problemas.
6O orgulho é como um ornamento nas suas vidas;
vestem-se de violência como da melhor roupa.
7Têm os olhos arregalados de cobiça
e a mente cheia de ambições.
8É gente corrompida,
que só sabe tratar com maldade e opressão;
tudo o que dizem é sempre com arrogância.
9Quando abrem a boca,
têm sempre de praguejar contra o céu;
a sua língua maldizente é capaz de varrer a Terra.
10Assim o povo de Deus fica frustrado e confuso,
aceitando tudo o que eles dizem.
11E vão-se perguntando a si próprios:
“Será que Deus, lá no alto, sabe o que está a acontecer?”
12Esta gente é contra Deus e vive em plena segurança;
estão sempre a ver as suas riquezas a aumentar.
13Não terá sido em vão que me tenho preocupado,
com a pureza das minhas intenções,
e procurado manter-me sempre isento de maldade?
14Afinal, tudo o que tenho obtido, em cada dia,
é só problemas e aborrecimentos!
15Mas se eu falasse realmente assim
estaria traindo o teu povo, ó Deus!
16Na verdade, isto é muito difícil de entender;
quando procurava uma resposta ficava confuso.
17Até que entrei no santuário de Deus
e compreendi, enfim, o destino dessa gente.
18Tu os colocas em caminhos escorregadios
e os farás cair na destruição.
19De um momento para o outro cairão na ruína
e ficarão consumidos pelo terror.
20A imagem deles varrerás das memórias, Senhor,
como quando alguém acorda dum pesadelo.
21Quando vi isto, o meu coração ficou perturbado.
22Senti-me tão estúpido e ignorante;
eu parecia um animal diante de ti, Senhor.
23Mas eu estou sempre contigo;
tu seguras-me pela mão.
24Guiar-me-ás com a tua sabedoria
e depois me receberás na tua glória.
25A quem tenho eu no céu, além de ti?
És, na Terra, quem eu mais desejo!
26A minha saúde e o meu espírito enfraquecem,
mas Deus é a força do meu coração.
Ele é meu para a eternidade!
27Aqueles que se afastam de ti, Senhor, perecerão;
destruirás os que te são infiéis.
28Quanto a mim, sinto-me feliz em aproximar-me de Deus.
O Senhor Deus é o meu refúgio;
hei de anunciar todos os teus feitos!
