1And when king Arad the Canaanite, which dwelt in the south, heard tell that Israel came by the way of the spies; then he fought against Israel, and took some of them prisoners. 2And Israel vowed a vow unto the LORD, and said, If thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities. 3And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and he called the name of the place Hormah.21.3 Hormah: that is, Utter destruction
4¶ And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way of the Red sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.21.4 discouraged: or, grieved: Heb. shortened 5And the people spake against God, and against Moses, Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, neither is there any water; and our soul loatheth this light bread. 6And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
7¶ Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. 8And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. 9And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived.
10¶ And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in Oboth. 11And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrising.21.11 Ije-abarim: or, heaps of Abarim
12¶ From thence they removed, and pitched in the valley of Zared. 13From thence they removed, and pitched on the other side of Arnon, which is in the wilderness that cometh out of the coasts of the Amorites: for Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites. 14Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,21.14 What…: or, Vaheb in Suphah 15And at the stream of the brooks that goeth down to the dwelling of Ar, and lieth upon the border of Moab.21.15 lieth: Heb. leaneth 16And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the LORD spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

21¶ And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the Amorites, saying, 22Let me pass through thy land: we will not turn into the fields, or into the vineyards; we will not drink of the waters of the well: but we will go along by the king’s high way, until we be past thy borders. 23And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness: and he came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 24And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from Arnon unto Jabbok, even unto the children of Ammon: for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 25And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.21.25 villages: Heb. daughters 26For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto Arnon. 27Wherefore they that speak in proverbs say, Come into Heshbon, let the city of Sihon be built and prepared: 28For there is a fire gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon: it hath consumed Ar of Moab, and the lords of the high places of Arnon. 29Woe to thee, Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh: he hath given his sons that escaped, and his daughters, into captivity unto Sihon king of the Amorites. 30We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even unto Dibon, and we have laid them waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto Medeba.
31¶ Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the Amorites. 32And Moses sent to spy out Jaazer, and they took the villages thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there.
33¶ And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei. 34And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon. 35So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.
Vitória sobre os cananeus
1Quando o rei cananeu de Arade, que habitava no Negueve, ouviu que os Israelitas se estavam a aproximar e que vinham pelo caminho de Atarim, mobilizou as suas forças militares e atacou Israel, fazendo alguns prisioneiros. 2Então o povo prometeu ao Senhor que, se ele os ajudasse a vencer o rei de Arade e o seu povo, haveriam de aniquilar completamente todas as cidades daquela área. 3O Senhor atendeu ao seu pedido; os cananeus foram completamente derrotados e as suas cidades destruídas. O nome daquela região ficou a ser Horma (destruição).
A serpente de bronze
4O povo de Israel voltou para o monte Hor e dali continuou para o sul, pelo caminho do mar Vermelho, para contornar a terra de Edom. O povo estava muito desencorajado, 5e começaram a lamentar-se contra Deus e a murmurar contra Moisés: “Porque é que nos tiraram do Egito para virmos morrer neste deserto? Não há nada para comer aqui, nada para beber, e já aborrecemos este insípido maná!”
6Então o Senhor mandou serpentes venenosas para os castigar; muitos foram mordidos e morreram.
7O povo chegou-se a Moisés e exclamou: “Pecámos, porque falámos contra o Senhor e contra ti. Ora ao Senhor para que afaste estas serpentes.” Moisés orou pelo povo.
8O Senhor disse-lhe: “Faz uma imitação em bronze, de uma dessas serpentes, e põe-na no alto duma vara; quem quer que tenha sido mordido ficará vivo, se simplesmente olhar para ela!”
9Moisés assim fez, e todos os que eram mordidos pelas serpentes e olhavam para a serpente de bronze, salvavam-se.
A jornada para Moabe
10Israel deslocou-se a seguir para Obote e acampou ali. 11Depois continuaram para Ié-Abarim, no deserto, a curta distância de Moabe, do lado nascente. 12Dali foram para o vale do ribeiro de Zerede e acamparam. 13Em seguida, mudaram-se para a outra banda do rio Arnom, que faz a fronteira entre os moabitas e os amorreus. 14Este facto está mencionado no Livro das Guerras do Senhor:
“Vaeb em Sufá, e os afluentes,
o vale do rio Arnom 15e a margem dos seus afluentes
que se estendem para os lados de Ar
e chegam até à fronteira de Moabe.”
16A deslocação seguinte foi para Beer. Este é o poço onde o Senhor disse a Moisés. “Convoca o povo e dar-lhe-ei água.”
17Esse acontecimento está descrito nesta canção que o povo canta:
“Jorra, ó poço!
Cantem a canção da água!
18Este é o poço que abriram os chefes.
Foi escavado pelos nobres,
pelos legisladores com as suas varas.”
Depois deixaram o deserto e continuaram para Mataná; 19daí para Naaliel e em seguida para Bamote. 20Daqui foram para o vale do planalto de Moabe, sobranceiro ao deserto, donde se avista à distância o monte Pisga.
A derrota dos reis Siom e Ogue
(Dt 2.24–3.11)
21Israel mandou daí embaixadores a Siom, rei dos amorreus:
22“Deixa que nos desloquemos através da tua terra. Não nos desviaremos do caminho principal até que tenhamos atingido a fronteira oposta. Não pisaremos os teus campos, nem tocaremos nas tuas vinhas, nem sequer da tua água provaremos.”
23Mas o rei Siom recusou. Mandou mesmo mobilizar o seu exército, veio ao encontro de Israel no deserto e atacou-o em Jaaz. 24Israel derrotou-os passando-os ao fio da espada, ocupando-lhes as terras, desde o rio Arnom até ao rio Jaboque, mesmo até às fronteiras dos amonitas; pararam aí, porque a fronteira era fortificada. 25Foi assim que Israel capturou todas as cidades dos amorreus e viveu nelas, incluindo a cidade de Hesbom 26que tinha sido a capital do rei Siom. Derrotou um anterior rei moabita e apropriou-se de todo o seu território até ao rio Arnom.
27Os antigos poetas referiram-se ao rei Siom neste poema:
“Venham até Hesbom, capital do rei Siom,
Reedifiquem-na e estabeleçam-na de novo.
28Porque fogo saiu dali
e devorou a cidade de Ar, de Moabe,
e destruiu os governantes das altura de Arnom.
29Ai de ti, Moabe!
Estás perdido, povo de Quemós.
Os seus filhos fugiram
e as suas filhas foram capturadas pelo rei Siom dos amorreus.
30Nós os derrotámos completamente;
Hesbom ficou destruída até Dibom;
nós os devastámos até Nofá e até Medeba.”
31Enquanto Israel esteve a viver na terra dos amorreus, 32Moisés enviou espias para observar a área de Jazer e conquistaram todas as cidades, expulsando os amorreus. 33Depois disso, voltaram a atenção contra a cidade de Basã. Mas o rei Ogue, dessa cidade, mais o seu exército, saiu contra eles em Edrei.
34O Senhor disse a Moisés para não os temer, porque lhes garantia antecipadamente a vitória sobre esses inimigos: “Acontecerá ao rei Ogue o mesmo que se deu com Siom, rei dos amorreus, em Hesbom.” 35E foi precisamente assim, de maneira que não ficou vivo um só dos inimigos. E Israel ocupou aquela terra.
