16And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah. 17They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon. 18For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. 19¶ And I said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, one far from another. 20In what place therefore ye hear the sound of the trumpet, resort ye thither unto us: our God shall fight for us. 21So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared. 22Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day. 23So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard which followed me, none of us put off our clothes, saving that every one put them off for washing.4.23 saving…: or, every one went with his weapon for water
Een samenzwering tegen de Israëlieten
1Sanballat werd vreselijk kwaad toen hij hoorde dat wij de muur aan het herbouwen waren. Ja, razend was hij. Hij dreef de spot met ons en lachte ons uit, waar zijn vrienden en het Samaritaanse leger bij waren. 2‘Wat denken die Judeeërs wel dat ze aan het doen zijn? Zij kunnen er niets van,’ zei hij spottend. ‘Denken ze dat dit karwei in één dag is geklaard, dat ze daar offers kunnen brengen? Kijk eens! Zelfs die oude stenen uit het puin proberen zij opnieuw te gebruiken!’ 3Tobia, die naast hem stond, deed er nog een schepje bovenop: ‘Als er maar een vos over die muur loopt, stort hij al in!’ 4Toen bad ik: ‘O God, hoor toch hoe wij worden uitgelachen! Laat hun spot op hun eigen hoofd terechtkomen, laat hen gevangen worden weggevoerd naar een vreemd land! 5Vergeef hun hun zonde niet, maar onthoud wat zij hebben misdaan. Want zij maken U belachelijk door ons die de muur herbouwen, te bespotten.’ 6Uiteindelijk was de muur klaar tot de helft van zijn oorspronkelijke hoogte. Er was heel hard aan gewerkt.
7Sanballat, Tobia, de Arabieren, Ammonieten en Asdodieten hoorden dat het herstel van Jeruzalems muren vorderde en de bressen zich begonnen te sluiten. 8Hierdoor raakten zij buiten zichzelf van woede. Zij smeedden een samenzwering en waren van plan Jeruzalem aan te vallen en paniek te zaaien. 9Maar wij baden tot onze God en wegens het dreigend gevaar lieten wij de muren dag en nacht bewaken. 10Enkele leiders zeiden: ‘Onze werklieden zijn aan het eind van hun krachten. Het is onbegonnen werk al dat puin alléén te verwijderen!’ 11Ondertussen hadden onze vijanden het plan ons onverwacht te overvallen en te vermoorden om zo het werk te verhinderen. 12Maar telkens kwamen er Judeeërs die tussen onze vijanden woonden, bij ons en zij waarschuwden ons wel tien keer voor wat zij tegen ons van plan waren. 13Daarom plaatste ik wachtposten uit elke familie op het laagstgelegen gedeelte van het terrein achter de muur. Deze mannen waren bewapend met zwaarden, speren en bogen. 14Nadat ik de hele situatie in ogenschouw had genomen, zei ik tegen de leiders en het volk: ‘Wees niet bang! Denk aan de Here, die groot en ontzagwekkend is. Vecht voor uw volk, uw vrouw en kinderen en uw huis!’
15Onze vijanden hoorden dat wij op de hoogte waren van hun samenzwering en begrepen dat God hun plan had verijdeld. Nu konden wij allemaal weer aan de slag gaan. Iedereen ging weer terug naar zijn eigen werk. 16Vanaf dat ogenblik werkte de ene helft, terwijl de andere helft, gewapend met speren, schilden, bogen en pantsers, de wacht hield. De leiders stonden als één man achter hen die het werk uitvoerden. 17De sjouwers deden hun werk met één hand en hielden met de andere een werpspies vast. 18De bouwlieden hadden tijdens het bouwen steeds een zwaard aan hun heup hangen. En de hoornblazer bleef voortdurend bij mij om zonodig alarm te blazen. 19‘Het werkterrein is zo uitgestrekt en we zijn zo ver van elkaar bezig,’ zei ik tegen de leiders en het volk, 20‘dat u, zodra u alarm hoort blazen, snel naar mij moet komen, onze God zal Zelf voor ons strijden.’ 21Wij werkten van zonsopgang tot zonsondergang, terwijl steeds de helft van de mannen de wacht hield. 22Ik beval dat alle mensen met hun dienaren in Jeruzalem moesten overnachten. Dan konden de dienaren ʼs nachts wachtlopen en overdag werken. 23Al die tijd kwamen wij niet uit de kleren, ik niet, en mijn broeders, mijn dienaren en de wachters die bij mij waren, ook niet. Ook wij hadden onze wapens voortdurend binnen handbereik.
