1And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. 2Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, 3And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers’ sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? 4Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. 5And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers’ sepulchres, that I may build it. 6And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.2.6 queen: Heb. wife 7Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah; 8And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.
9¶ Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me. 10When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel. 11So I came to Jerusalem, and was there three days.
12¶ And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; neither told I any man what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem: neither was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon. 13And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon well, and to the dung port, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem, which were broken down, and the gates thereof were consumed with fire. 14Then I went on to the gate of the fountain, and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass. 15Then went I up in the night by the brook, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned. 16And the rulers knew not whither I went, or what I did; neither had I as yet told it to the Jews, nor to the priests, nor to the nobles, nor to the rulers, nor to the rest that did the work.
17¶ Then said I unto them, Ye see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lieth waste, and the gates thereof are burned with fire: come, and let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we be no more a reproach. 18Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that he had spoken unto me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work. 19But when Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian, heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that ye do? will ye rebel against the king? 20Then answered I them, and said unto them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but ye have no portion, nor right, nor memorial, in Jerusalem.
Pumunta si Nehemias sa Jerusalem
1Noong unang buwan, na siyang buwan ng Nisan, nang ika-20 taon ng paghahari ni Artaserses, sinilbihan ko ng inumin ang hari. Noon lang niya ako nakitang malungkot. 2Kaya tinanong niya ako, “Bakit ka nalulungkot, mukha ka namang walang sakit? Parang may problema ka.” Labis akong kinabahan, 3pero sumagot ako sa hari, “Humaba po nawa ang buhay ng Mahal na Hari! Nalulungkot po ako dahil ang lungsod na pinaglibingan ng aking mga ninuno ay nagiba at ang mga pintuan nito ay nasunog.” 4Nagtanong ang hari, “Ano ang gusto mo?” Nanalangin ako sa Dios ng kalangitan, 5at pagkatapos, sumagot ako sa hari, “Kung maaari po, Mahal na Hari, at kung nalulugod po kayo sa akin, gusto ko sanang umuwi sa Juda, para muling ipatayo ang lungsod kung saan inilibing ang aking mga ninuno.”
6Tinanong ako ng hari habang nakaupo ang reyna sa tabi niya, “Gaano ka katagal doon at kailan ka babalik?” Sinabi ko kung kailan ako babalik, at pinayagan niya ako. 7Humiling din ako sa hari, “Kung maaari po, Mahal na Hari, bigyan nʼyo po ako ng mga sulat para sa mga gobernador ng probinsya sa kanlurang Eufrates, na payagan nila akong dumaan sa nasasakupan nila sa pag-uwi ko sa Juda. 8At kung maaari, bigyan nʼyo rin po ako ng sulat para kay Asaf na tagapagbantay ng mga halamanan ninyo, para bigyan ako ng mga kahoy na gagamitin sa paggawa ng pintuan ng matatag na kuta malapit sa templo, at sa pagpapatayo ng pader ng lungsod at ng bahay na titirhan ko.” Pinagbigyan ng hari ang mga kahilingan ko sa kanya dahil sa kabutihan ng Dios sa akin.
9Sa pag-alis ko, pinasamahan pa ako ng hari sa mga opisyal ng sundalo at sa mga mangangabayo. Pagdating ko sa kanluran ng Eufrates, ibinigay ko sa mga gobernador ang sulat ng hari. 10Ngunit nang marinig nina Sanbalat na taga-Horon at Tobia na isang opisyal ng Ammonita na dumating ako para tulungan ang mga Israelita, labis silang nagalit.
Tiningnan ni Nehemias ang Pader ng Jerusalem
11Pagkalipas ng tatlong araw mula nang dumating ako sa Jerusalem, 12umalis ako nang hatinggabi na may ilang kasama. Hindi ko sinabi kahit kanino ang gustong ipagawa sa akin ng Dios tungkol sa Jerusalem. Wala kaming dalang ibang hayop maliban sa sinasakyan kong asno. 13Lumabas kami sa pintuang nakaharap sa lambak at pumunta sa Balon ng Dragon2:13 Dragon: o, ahas; o, asong-gubat. hanggang sa may pintuan ng pinagtatapunan ng basura. Pinagmasdan kong mabuti ang mga nagibang pader ng Jerusalem at ang mga pintuan nitong nasunog. 14Nagpatuloy ako sa Pintuan ng Bukal hanggang sa paliguan ng hari, pero hindi makaraan doon ang asno ko. 15Kaya tumuloy na lang ako sa Lambak ng Kidron, at siniyasat ang mga pader nang gabing iyon. Pagkatapos, bumalik ako at muling dumaan sa pintuang nakaharap sa lambak.
16Hindi alam ng mga opisyal ng lungsod kung saan ako nanggaling at kung ano ang ginawa ko. Sapagkat wala pa akong pinagsabihang Judio tungkol sa balak ko, kahit ang mga pari, mga pinuno, mga opisyal, at ang iba pang nasa pamahalaan.
17Ngunit ngayon ay sinabi ko sa kanila, “Nakita nʼyo ang nakakaawang kalagayan ng lungsod natin. Giba ang Jerusalem at sunog ang mga pintuan nito. Muli nating itayo ang pader ng Jerusalem para hindi na tayo mapahiya.” 18Sinabi ko rin sa kanila kung gaano kabuti ang Dios sa akin at kung ano ang sinabi ng hari sa akin. Sumagot sila, “Sige, muli nating itayo ang pader.” Kaya naghanda sila para simulan ang mabuting gawaing ito. 19Ngunit nang mabalitaan ito ni Sanbalat na taga-Horon, ni Tobia na isang opisyal na Ammonita, at ni Geshem na isang Arabo, nilait nila kami at pinagtawanan. Sinabi nila, “Ano ang ginagawa nʼyong ito? Nagbabalak ba kayong maghimagsik laban sa hari?” 20Sinagot ko sila, “Magtatagumpay kami sa pamamagitan ng tulong ng Dios sa langit. Kami na mga lingkod niya ay magsisimula na sa pagpapatayo ng pader ng Jerusalem. Pero kayo ay hindi kabilang at walang karapatan sa Jerusalem, at hindi kayo bahagi ng kasaysayan nito.”
