Gods aanklacht tegen het volk
1Luister naar wat de Here tegen zijn volk zegt: ‘Sta op en breng uw beschuldigingen tegen Mij naar voren. Laten de bergen en heuvels getuige zijn van uw aanklacht.’ 2Welnu, bergen, luister naar de aanklacht van de Here. Ook de diepten van de aarde moeten het horen. De Here heeft een aanklacht tegen zijn volk. Hij wil tegen Israël een proces beginnen.
3‘Mijn volk,’ zegt de Here, ‘wat heb Ik u aangedaan, zodat u zich nu van Mij afkeert? Waarmee heb Ik u dan lastiggevallen? Kom voor de dag met uw beschuldigingen! Antwoord Mij. 4Ik heb u immers uit Egypte gehaald en verlost van die slavernij! Ik gaf u Mozes, Aäron en Mirjam om u te leiden. 5Mijn volk, bent u dan vergeten hoe koning Balak van Moab probeerde u te vernietigen door u door Bileam, de zoon van Beor, te laten vervloeken? Weet u niet meer dat Ik hem toen in plaats van een vloek een zegen liet uitspreken? Keer op keer heb Ik voor u het beste gezocht. Herinnert u zich niet meer wat gebeurde vanaf Sittim tot Gilgal, bij de oversteek van de Jordaan, en hoe Ik u toen heb gezegend?’
6‘Hoe kunnen wij tegenover de Here weer goedmaken wat we hebben misdaan?’ vraagt Israël. ‘Moeten we ons met de Here verzoenen door het offeren van eenjarige kalveren? 7Al zouden duizenden rammen of tienduizend beken olijfolie worden geofferd, het zou de Here toch niet kunnen behagen. Zouden wij onze oudste zoon moeten offeren? Zouden dan onze zonden worden vergeven?’
8Nee, natuurlijk niet! De Here heeft u laten weten wat goed is en wat Hij van u verwacht. Hij wil niet anders dan dat u eerlijk en rechtvaardig bent en uw best doet liefde te bewijzen en als een nederig mens leeft met uw God.
9Luister! Wie wijs is, houdt zijn oren open, de Here roept tot Jeruzalem, luister naar de straf die de Here gestuurd heeft, 10want deze stad heeft zwaar gezondigd. ‘De huizen van de goddelozen liggen volgestouwd met onrechtmatig verworven schatten en onzuivere weegschalen. 11Zou Ik het goed vinden dat u onzuivere weegschalen gebruikt en uw zakken vol zijn met valse gewichten? Hoe kan God rechtvaardig zijn als Hij dat zou zeggen? 12Uw rijke burgers hebben hun rijkdom door geweld verkregen en al uw inwoners liegen en bedriegen of het niets is!
13Daarom ben Ik begonnen u te verwonden, u te verwoesten vanwege uw zonden. 14U zult eten maar nooit genoeg hebben. Het hongergevoel zal nooit verdwijnen. U zult proberen geld te sparen, maar het levert niets op. En het weinige dat u nog weet op te sparen, zal Ik geven aan hen die u overwinnen. 15U zult wel zaaien, maar niet oogsten. U zult olie uit olijven persen, maar niet voldoende hebben om uzelf ermee te zalven. U zult wel druiven plattrappen voor wijn, maar er nooit van drinken. 16De enige bepalingen waaraan u zich houdt, zijn die van Omri. Het enige voorbeeld dat u volgt, is dat van Achab! Daarom zal Ik u tot een afschrikwekkend voorbeeld stellen. Ik zal u verwoesten en tot het mikpunt van bespotting van de hele wereld maken. Iedereen zal u uitlachen.’
