1When the morning was come, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death: 2And when they had bound him, they led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.
3¶ Then Judas, which had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought again the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders, 4Saying, I have sinned in that I have betrayed the innocent blood. And they said, What is that to us? see thou to that. 5And he cast down the pieces of silver in the temple, and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood. 7And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in. 8Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day. 9Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value; 10And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me. 11And Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest. 12And when he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing. 13Then said Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee? 14And he answered him to never a word; insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly. 15Now at that feast the governor was wont to release unto the people a prisoner, whom they would. 16And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas. 17Therefore when they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus which is called Christ? 18For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
19¶ When he was set down on the judgment seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him. 20But the chief priests and elders persuaded the multitude that they should ask Barabbas, and destroy Jesus. 21The governor answered and said unto them, Whether of the twain will ye that I release unto you? They said, Barabbas. 22Pilate saith unto them, What shall I do then with Jesus which is called Christ? They all say unto him, Let him be crucified. 23And the governor said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out the more, saying, Let him be crucified.
24¶ When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. 25Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children.
26¶ Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified. 27Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered unto him the whole band of soldiers. 28And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.
29¶ And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews! 30And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head. 31And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him. 32And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross. 33And when they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,
34¶ They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted thereof, he would not drink. 35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots. 36And sitting down they watched him there; 37And set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. 38Then were there two thieves crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.
39¶ And they that passed by reviled him, wagging their heads, 40And saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself. If thou be the Son of God, come down from the cross. 41Likewise also the chief priests mocking him, with the scribes and elders, said, 42He saved others; himself he cannot save. If he be the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him. 43He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said, I am the Son of God. 44The thieves also, which were crucified with him, cast the same in his teeth. 45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour. 46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? 47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias. 48And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink. 49The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.
50¶ Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost. 51And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent; 52And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, 53And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many. 54Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God. 55And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him: 56Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children. 57When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathæa, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: 58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered. 59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, 60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. 61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.
62¶ Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, 63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. 64Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first. 65Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. 66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

イエスの裁判と十字架の死
1さて、朝になりました。祭司長とユダヤ人の指導者たちはまた集まり、どうやってローマ政府にイエスの死刑を承認させようかと、あれこれ策を練りました。 2それから、縛ったまま、イエスをローマ総督ピラトに引き渡しました。
3ところで、裏切り者のユダはどうなったでしょう。イエスに死刑の判決が下されると聞いてはじめて、彼は自分のしたことがどんなに大それたことだったか気づき、深く後悔しました。それで祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちのところに銀貨三十枚を返しに行き、 4「私はとんでもない罪を犯してしまった。罪のない人の血を売ったりして」と言いました。しかし祭司長たちは、「今さらわれわれの知ったことか。かってにしろ」と言って、取り合おうとしませんでした。
5それでユダは、銀貨を神殿に投げ込み、出て行って首をくくって死んでしまいました。 6祭司長たちはその銀貨を拾い上げてつぶやきました。「まさか、これを神殿の金庫に入れるわけにもいくまい。人を殺すために使った金だから。」
7彼らは相談し、その金で、陶器師が粘土を取っていた畑を買い上げ、そこをエルサレムで死んだ外国人の墓地とすることにしました。 8そこでこの墓地は、今でも「血の畑」と呼ばれています。 9-10こうして、「彼らは銀貨三十枚を取った。それは、イスラエルの人々がその人を見積もった値段だ。彼らは、主が私に命じられたように、それで陶器師の畑を買った」（ゼカリヤ11・12―13）というエレミヤの預言のとおりになったのです。
11さてイエスは、ローマ総督ピラトの前に立ちました。総督はイエスを尋問しました。「おまえはユダヤ人の王なのか。」イエスは「そのとおりです」と答えました。
12しかし、祭司長とユダヤ人の指導者たちからいろいろな訴えが出されている時は、口をつぐんで、何もお答えになりませんでした。 13それでピラトはイエスに、「おまえにあれほど不利な証言をしているのが、聞こえないのか」と尋ねました。
14それでもイエスは何もお答えになりません。これには総督も、驚きあきれてしまいました。
15ところで、毎年、過越の祭りの間に、ユダヤ人たちが希望する囚人の一人に、総督が恩赦を与える慣習がありました。 16当時、獄中にはバラバという名の知れた男が捕らえられていました。 17それでその朝、群衆が官邸に詰めかけた時、ピラトは尋ねました。「さあ、いったいどちらを釈放してほしいのか。バラバか、それともキリストと呼ばれるイエスか。」 18ピラトがこう言ったのは、イエスが捕らえられたのは、イエスの人気をねたむユダヤ人指導者たちの陰謀だと気づいたからです。
19裁判の最中に、ピラトのもとへ彼の妻が、「どうぞ、その正しい方に手をお出しになりませんように。ゆうべ、その人のことで恐ろしい夢を見ましたから」と言ってよこしました。
20ところが、祭司長とユダヤの役人たちは、バラバを釈放し、イエスの死刑を要求するように、群衆をたきつけました。 21それで、ピラトがもう一度、「二人のうち、どちらを釈放してほしいのか」と尋ねると、群衆は即座に、「バラバを！」と大声で叫んだのでした。
22「では、キリストと呼ばれるあのイエスは、どうするのだ。」「十字架につけろ！」
23「どうしてだ。あの男がいったいどんな悪事を働いたというのか。」ピラトがむきになって尋ねても、人々は、「十字架だ！ 十字架につけろ！」と叫び続けるばかりでした。
24どうにも手のつけようがありません。暴動になるおそれさえ出てきました。あきらめたピラトは、水を入れた鉢を持って来させ、群衆の面前で手を洗い、「この正しい人の血について、私には何の責任もない。責任は全部おまえたちが負いなさい」と言いました。
25すると群衆は大声で、「かまわない。責任はおれたちや子どもたちの上にふりかかってもいい！」と叫びました。
26ピラトはやむなくバラバを釈放し、イエスをむち打ってから、十字架につけるためにローマ兵に引き渡しました。 27兵士たちはまず、イエスを兵営に連れて行き、全部隊を召集すると、 28イエスの着物をはぎとって赤いガウンを着せ、 29長いとげのいばらで作った冠を頭に載せ、右手には、王の笏に見立てた葦の棒を持たせました。それから、拝むまねをして、「これはこれは、ユダヤ人の王様。ばんざーい！」とはやし立てました。 30また、つばをかけたり、葦の棒をひったくって頭をたたいたりしました。
31こうしてさんざんからかったあげく、赤いガウンを脱がせ、もとの服を着せると、いよいよ十字架につけるために引いて行きました。 32刑場に行く途中、通りすがりの男にむりやりイエスの十字架を背負わせました。クレネから来合わせたシモンという男でした。 33ついに、ゴルゴタ、すなわち「どくろの丘」という名で知られる場所に着きました。 34兵士たちはそこで、薬用のぶどう酒を飲ませようとしましたが、イエスはちょっと口をつけただけで、飲もうとはされませんでした。
35イエスを十字架につけ終わると、兵士たちはさいころを投げてイエスの着物を分け合いました。 36それがすむと、今度はその場に座って見張りをしました。 37またイエスの頭上には、「この者はユダヤ人の王イエスである」と書いた罪状書きを打ちつけました。
38その朝、強盗が二人、それぞれイエスの右と左で十字架につけられました。 39刑場のそばを通りかかった人々は、大げさな身ぶりをしながら、口ぎたなくイエスをののしりました。 40「やい。神殿を打ちこわして、三日のうちに建て直せるんだってな！ おまえが神の子だって？ それなら、十字架から降りてみろ。」
41祭司長やユダヤ人の指導者たちも、イエスをあざけりました。 42「他人は救えるが自分は救えないというわけか。イスラエルの王が聞いてあきれる。さあ、十字架から降りて来い！ そうしたら信じてやろうじゃないか。 43おまえは神に頼っているのだろう。神のお気に入りなら、せいぜい助けていただくがいい。自分を神の子だと言っていたのだから。」
44強盗までがいっしょになって、悪口をあびせました。
45さて時間がたち、正午にもなったころ、急にあたりが暗くなり、一面の闇におおわれました。それが三時間も続きました。
46三時ごろ、イエスは大声で、「エリ、エリ、レマ、サバクタニ」と叫ばれました。それは、「わが神、わが神。どうしてわたしをお見捨てになったのですか」という意味です。
47近くでその声を聞いた人の中には、「あれはエリヤを呼んでいるのだ」と思う者もいました。 48一人の男がさっと駆け寄り、海綿に酸っぱいぶどう酒を含ませると、それを葦の棒につけて差し出しました。 49ところが、ほかの者たちは、「放っておけよ。エリヤが救いに来るかどうか、見ようじゃないか」と言いました。
50その時、イエスはもう一度大声で叫んで、息を引き取りました。 51すると、神殿の至聖所を仕切っていた幕が、上から下まで真っ二つに裂けたのです。大地は揺れ動き、岩はくずれました。 52さらに墓が開いて、生前神に従っていた多くの人たちが生き返りました。 53彼らはイエスが復活されたあと、墓を出てエルサレムに入り、多くの人の前に姿を現したのです。
54十字架のそばにいた隊長や兵士たちは、このすさまじい地震やいろいろの出来事を見て震え上がり、「この人はほんとうに神の子だった！」と叫びました。
55イエスの世話をするためにガリラヤからついて来たたくさんの女たちも、遠くからこの様子を見ていました。 56マグダラのマリヤ、ヤコブとヨセフの母マリヤ、ゼベダイの息子ヤコブとヨハネの母などです。
イエスの埋葬
57夕方になりました。イエスの弟子で、アリマタヤ出身のヨセフという金持ちが来て、 58ピラトに、イエスの遺体を引き取りたいと願い出ました。ピラトは願いを聞き入れ、遺体を渡すように命じました。 59ヨセフは遺体を取り降ろすと、きれいな亜麻布でくるみ、 60岩をくり抜いた、自分の新しい墓に納めました。そして、大きな石を転がして入口をふさぎ、帰って行きました。 61この有様を、マグダラのマリヤともう一人のマリヤが、近くに座って見ていました。 62-63翌日の安息日に、祭司長やパリサイ人たちがピラトに願い出ました。「総督閣下。あの大うそつきは、確か、『わたしは三日後に復活する』と言っていました。 64それをいいことに、弟子たちが死体を盗み出し、イエスは復活したと言いふらしては、まずいことになりかねません。それこそ、このところの騒ぎではすまず、大混乱になるかもしれません。ですからどうぞ、墓を三日目まで見張るように命令を出してください。」
65ピラトは答えました。「よろしい。では厳重に見張らせるがよい。」
66そこで彼らは、石に封印をし、警備の者をおいて、だれも忍び込めないようにしました。
