1The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. 2He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. 3And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? 4A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed. 5And when his disciples were come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
6¶ Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees. 7And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have taken no bread. 8Which when Jesus perceived, he said unto them, O ye of little faith, why reason ye among yourselves, because ye have brought no bread? 9Do ye not yet understand, neither remember the five loaves of the five thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 10Neither the seven loaves of the four thousand, and how many baskets ye took up? 11How is it that ye do not understand that I spake it not to you concerning bread, that ye should beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees? 12Then understood they how that he bade them not beware of the leaven of bread, but of the doctrine of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.
13¶ When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 20Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ.
21¶ From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. 22Then Peter took him, and began to rebuke him, saying, Be it far from thee, Lord: this shall not be unto thee. 23But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
24¶ Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. 26For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? 27For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works. 28Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
درخواست معجزه
1روزی فريسی‌ها و صدوقی‌ها كه سران مذهبی و سياسی قوم بودند، آمدند تا ادعای عيسی را مبنی بر مسيح بودن، بيازمايند. به اين منظور از او خواستند تا معجزه‌ای آسمانی بكند.
2-3او جواب داد: «شما خوب می‌توانيد وضع هوا را پيش‌بينی كنيد. اگر عصر، آسمان سرخ باشد، می‌گوييد فردا هوا خوب خواهد بود؛ و اگر صبح، آسمان سرخ باشد، می‌گوييد كه باران خواهد باريد. چگونه اين چيزها را می‌دانيد، اما نمی‌توانيد علائم و نشانه‌های زمانها را درک كنيد؟ 4اين قوم گناهكار و بی‌ايمان معجزهٔ آسمانی می‌خواهند، ولی غير از معجزهٔ يونس، معجزهٔ ديگری به آنان نشان داده نخواهد شد.» اين را گفت و از ايشان جدا شد.
خميرمايه فريسی‌ها و صدوقی‌ها
5وقتی به آن سوس دريا رسيدند، شاگردان متوجه شدند كه فراموش كرده‌اند چيزی برای خوردن بردارند. 6عيسی به ايشان فرمود: «مواظب باشيد و خود را از خميرمايه فريسی‌ها و صدوقی‌ها دور نگه داريد.»
7شاگردان فكر كردند كه گفتهٔ عيسی به اين علت است كه ايشان فراموش كرده‌اند نان بردارند.
8عيسی فكر ايشان را درک كرد و فرمود: «ای كم‌ايمانها! چرا اينقدر غصه می‌خوريد كه نان به همراه نياورده‌ايد؟ 9آيا هنوز هم نمی‌فهميد؟ آيا فراموش كرده‌ايد كه چطور با پنج نان، پنج هزار نفر را سير كردم؟ آن روز چند سبد از خُرده‌ها جمع كرديد؟ 10يا از ياد برده‌ايد كه يكبار ديگر با هفت نان، چهار هزار نفر را سير كردم؟ چند سبد از خُرده‌ها جمع كرديد؟ 11پس چگونه باز فكر می‌كنيد كه من دربارهٔ نان سخن می‌گويم؟ باز هم می‌گويم: از خميرمايهٔ فريسی‌ها و صدوقی‌ها خود را دور نگاه داريد.»
12بالاخره شاگردان فهميدند كه منظور عيسی از «خميرمايه»، همانا تعليمات فريسی‌ها و صدوقی‌ها است.
عقيدهٔ پطرس دربارهٔ شخصيت عيسی
13وقتی عيسی به قيصريهٔ فيليپ رسيد، از شاگردانش پرسيد: «مردم مرا كه می‌دانند؟»
14جواب دادند: «بعضی‌ها می‌گويند كه شما يحيای پيغمبر هستيد؛ عده‌ای نيز می‌گويند الياس، يا ارميا و يا يكی از پيغمبران ديگر می‌باشيد.»
15سپس پرسيد: «شما مرا كه می‌دانيد؟»
16شمعون پطرس جواب داد: «مسيح، فرزند خدای زنده!»
17عيسی فرمود: «ای شمعون، پسر يونا، خوشا به حال تو! زيرا تو اين حقيقت را از انسان نياموختی، بلكه پدر آسمانی من اين را بر تو آشكار ساخته است. 18تو پطرس، يعنی ”سنگ“ هستی، و من بر روی اين صخره، كليسای خود را بنا می‌كنم، و قدرتهای جهنم هرگز قادر به نابودی آن نخواهند بود. 19من كليدهای ملكوت خدا را در اختيار تو می‌گذارم تا هر دری را بر روی زمين ببندی، در آسمان بسته شود، و هر دری را بگشايی در آسمان نيز گشوده شود.»
20آنگاه به شاگردانش دستور داد به كسی نگويند كه او مسيح است.
پيشگويی عيسی دربارهٔ مرگ خويش
21از آن پس، عيسی آشكارا به شاگردانش می‌گفت كه او به اورشليم خواهد رفت و در آنجا سران يهود و علمای مذهبی او را آزار داده، خواهند كشت؛ اما می‌گفت كه روز سوم زنده خواهد شد.
22پطرس او را به كناری كشيده، با مخالفت به او گفت: «سَروَر من، خدا نكند كه چنين اتفاقی برای شما بيفتد.»
23عيسی برگشت و به پطرس فرمود: «دور شو از من ای شيطان! تو دام خطرناكی برای من می‌باشی! فكر تو فكر بشری است نه الهی.»
24آنگاه عيسی به شاگردانش گفت: «هر كه می‌خواهد مريد من باشد، بايد خود را فراموش كند و صليب خود را برداشته، مرا پيروی كند. 25زيرا هر كه بخواهد جان خود را برای خود حفظ كند، آن را از دست خواهد داد؛ اما كسی كه جانش را به خاطر من فدا كند، آن را دوباره به دست خواهد آورد. 26برای شما چه فايده‌ای دارد اگر تمام دنيا را داشته باشيد، ولی زندگی جاويد را از دست بدهيد؟ آيا چيزی پيدا می‌شود كه قدر و قيمتش از زندگی جاويد بيشتر باشد؟ 27زيرا من با فرشتگان خود در شكوه و جلال پدرم خواهم آمد و هر كس را از روی اعمالش داوری خواهم كرد. 28بعضی از كسانی كه در اينجا هستند، پيش از مرگ، مرا در شكوه ملكوتم خواهند ديد.»
