1Then Jerubbaal, who is Gideon, and all the people that were with him, rose up early, and pitched beside the well of Harod: so that the host of the Midianites were on the north side of them, by the hill of Moreh, in the valley. 2And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. 3Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. 4And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go. 5So he brought down the people unto the water: and the LORD said unto Gideon, Every one that lappeth of the water with his tongue, as a dog lappeth, him shalt thou set by himself; likewise every one that boweth down upon his knees to drink. 6And the number of them that lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, were three hundred men: but all the rest of the people bowed down upon their knees to drink water. 7And the LORD said unto Gideon, By the three hundred men that lapped will I save you, and deliver the Midianites into thine hand: and let all the other people go every man unto his place. 8So the people took victuals in their hand, and their trumpets: and he sent all the rest of Israel every man unto his tent, and retained those three hundred men: and the host of Midian was beneath him in the valley.
9¶ And it came to pass the same night, that the LORD said unto him, Arise, get thee down unto the host; for I have delivered it into thine hand. 10But if thou fear to go down, go thou with Phurah thy servant down to the host: 11And thou shalt hear what they say; and afterward shall thine hands be strengthened to go down unto the host. Then went he down with Phurah his servant unto the outside of the armed men that were in the host.7.11 armed men: or, ranks by five 12And the Midianites and the Amalekites and all the children of the east lay along in the valley like grasshoppers for multitude; and their camels were without number, as the sand by the sea side for multitude. 13And when Gideon was come, behold, there was a man that told a dream unto his fellow, and said, Behold, I dreamed a dream, and, lo, a cake of barley bread tumbled into the host of Midian, and came unto a tent, and smote it that it fell, and overturned it, that the tent lay along. 14And his fellow answered and said, This is nothing else save the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel: for into his hand hath God delivered Midian, and all the host.
15¶ And it was so, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream, and the interpretation thereof, that he worshipped, and returned into the host of Israel, and said, Arise; for the LORD hath delivered into your hand the host of Midian.7.15 interpretation: Heb. breaking
16And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.7.16 a trumpet…: Heb. trumpets in the hand of all of them7.16 lamps: or, firebrands, or, torches 17And he said unto them, Look on me, and do likewise: and, behold, when I come to the outside of the camp, it shall be that, as I do, so shall ye do. 18When I blow with a trumpet, I and all that are with me, then blow ye the trumpets also on every side of all the camp, and say, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon.
19¶ So Gideon, and the hundred men that were with him, came unto the outside of the camp in the beginning of the middle watch; and they had but newly set the watch: and they blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers that were in their hands. 20And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands, and the trumpets in their right hands to blow withal: and they cried, The sword of the LORD, and of Gideon. 21And they stood every man in his place round about the camp: and all the host ran, and cried, and fled. 22And the three hundred blew the trumpets, and the LORD set every man’s sword against his fellow, even throughout all the host: and the host fled to Beth-shittah in Zererath, and to the border of Abel-meholah, unto Tabbath.7.22 in: or, toward7.22 border: Heb. lip
23And the men of Israel gathered themselves together out of Naphtali, and out of Asher, and out of all Manasseh, and pursued after the Midianites.
24¶ And Gideon sent messengers throughout all mount Ephraim, saying, Come down against the Midianites, and take before them the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. Then all the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together, and took the waters unto Beth-barah and Jordan. 25And they took two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb; and they slew Oreb upon the rock Oreb, and Zeeb they slew at the winepress of Zeeb, and pursued Midian, and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon on the other side Jordan.

ミデヤン軍との戦い

2その時、主はギデオンにこのように告げました。「兵が多すぎる。このままでミデヤンと戦わせるわけにはいかない。イスラエルの民が自力で勝ったつもりになって、わたしに対して誇ってしまうかもしれないからだ。 3臆病風に吹かれている者は、すぐに家に帰らせなさい。」すると、兵のうち二万二千人が去り、戦闘意欲のある者だけ一万人が残りました。
4しかしなお主はギデオンに、「まだ多すぎる。全員を連れて泉のほとりに下りなさい。だれがあなたとともに行くべきで、だれが行くべきでないか、はっきりと示そう」と言います。 5-6ギデオンは一同を水辺に集合させました。すると主の声があって、「水の飲み方で全員を二組に分けなさい。手で水をすくい、口にあてて飲む者と、かがみ込んで犬のように口を水につけて飲む者とを振り分けなさい。」すると、手で水をすくって飲んだのは三百人だけで、ほかの者はみな、水に口をつけて飲んだのです。 7そこで主はギデオンに言われました。「わたしは、手ですくって飲んだ三百人でミデヤン人を征服しよう。残りの者はすべて家へ帰らせなさい。」
8-9ギデオンは、彼らが持っている兵糧用のつぼと角笛（ラッパ）を供出させてから、三百人だけを残し、あとの者は帰宅させました。
さて、ミデヤン人の陣営はギデオンたちの所から眼下に見下ろせる谷にありました。その夜、主はギデオンに命じました。「起きなさい！ ミデヤンの陣地に突入しなさい！ 必ず勝利するから。 10しかし心配なら、部下のプラを連れて敵陣に侵入し、 11敵の間でどんな会話が交わされているか、自分の耳で確かめるがいい。勇気百倍になって攻撃に出られるはずだ。」
ギデオンはプラを連れ、闇にまぎれて敵の前哨基地にもぐり込みました。 12-13ミデヤン人、アマレク人、そのほか東方諸国の兵士がいなごのように谷に群がり、らくだも浜辺の砂のように数えきれないほどでした。一つの天幕まで近づくと、ちょうど一人の男が、彼の見た恐ろしい夢を仲間に話しているところでした。「全くいやな夢を見たよ。どでかい大麦のパンのかたまりが、この陣地めがけて転がり落ちて来るのさ。それで、テントをぺしゃんこにしてしまうのだ。」 14「そりゃ、こうに違いないよ。イスラエル軍にヨアシュの子のギデオンというのがいてな、そいつがわれわれ連合軍を全滅させようとしてるんだ。」
15これを聞いたギデオンは、その場に立ち尽くしたまま、主を礼拝しました。すぐさまイスラエルの陣営に取って返し、こう叫びました。「集まれ！ 主はわれわれの手にミデヤンの大軍を渡してくださるのだ！」 16彼は三百人を三隊に分け、めいめいに角笛とつぼを持たせました。つぼには、たいまつが隠してありました。 17「よいか。敵の最前線に着いたら、私がするとおりにするのだ。 18私と私の部隊の者が角笛を吹いたら、ほかの部隊の者も敵陣をぐるりと取り囲んで、いっせいに角笛を吹き鳴らせ。そして、『主のために、ギデオンのために戦うぞ！』と叫ぶのだ。」
19-20ギデオンの率いる百人が、ミデヤン軍の前線に忍び込んだ時は真夜中で、ちょうど歩哨の交替が終わったところでした。この時とばかり、彼らはラッパを吹き鳴らし、つぼを打ち砕きました。暗闇の中で、たいまつがぱっと燃え上がります。ほかの二百人も同じようにしました。右手に持ったラッパを吹き鳴らし、左手にたいまつを掲げながら大声で叫んだのです。「主のために、ギデオンのために戦うぞ！」
21敵の大軍は大混乱に陥り、右往左往し、悲鳴を上げて逃げ出しました。イスラエル軍は、ただ立って見ているだけで十分でした。 22大混乱の中で、主はミデヤン軍全体が同士打ちするようにさせたので、そこは修羅場と化し、生き延びた者たちは闇の中をツェレラ近くのベテ・ハシタや、タバテに近いアベル・メホラの境界まで逃げて行きました。
23ギデオンは、ナフタリ、アシェル、マナセの軍隊を呼び寄せ、逃走中のミデヤン軍を追撃して滅ぼすよう命じました。 24また、エフライムの山地全域に使者を送り、エフライム人にベテ・バラにあるヨルダン川の渡し場を押さえさせ、ミデヤン軍の退路を閉ざしました。 25彼らはミデヤン軍の二人の将軍、オレブとゼエブを捕らえ、オレブは、今では「オレブの岩」と呼ばれるようになった岩の上で殺され、ゼエブも、「ゼエブの岩」と呼ばれるようになった酒ぶねの中で殺されました。こうしてイスラエル軍は、ヨルダン川の西側にいたギデオンのもとに二人の首を届けました。
