5¶ And it came to pass on the fourth day, when they arose early in the morning, that he rose up to depart: and the damsel’s father said unto his son in law, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way.19.5 Comfort: Heb. 16¶ And, behold, there came an old man from his work out of the field at even, which was also of mount Ephraim; and he sojourned in Gibeah: but the men of the place were Benjamites. 17And when he had lifted up his eyes, he saw a wayfaring man in the street of the city: and the old man said, Whither goest thou? and whence comest thou? 18And he said unto him, We are passing from Beth-lehem-judah toward the side of mount Ephraim; from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem-judah, but I am now going to the house of the LORD; and there is no man that receiveth me to house.19.18 receiveth: Heb. gathereth 19Yet there is both straw and provender for our asses; and there is bread and wine also for me, and for thy handmaid, and for the young man which is with thy servants: there is no want of any thing. 20And the old man said, Peace be with thee; howsoever let all thy wants lie upon me; only lodge not in the street. 21So he brought him into his house, and gave provender unto the asses: and they washed their feet, and did eat and drink.
22¶ Now as they were making their hearts merry, behold, the men of the city, certain sons of Belial, beset the house round about, and beat at the door, and spake to the master of the house, the old man, saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house, that we may know him. 23And the man, the master of the house, went out unto them, and said unto them, Nay, my brethren, nay, I pray you, do not so wickedly; seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this folly. 24Behold, here is my daughter a maiden, and his concubine; them I will bring out now, and humble ye them, and do with them what seemeth good unto you: but unto this man do not so vile a thing.19.24 so vile…: Heb. the matter of this folly 25But the men would not hearken to him: so the man took his concubine, and brought her forth unto them; and they knew her, and abused her all the night until the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her go. 26Then came the woman in the dawning of the day, and fell down at the door of the man’s house where her lord was, till it was light. 27And her lord rose up in the morning, and opened the doors of the house, and went out to go his way: and, behold, the woman his concubine was fallen down at the door of the house, and her hands were upon the threshold. 28And he said unto her, Up, and let us be going. But none answered. Then the man took her up upon an ass, and the man rose up, and gat him unto his place.
29¶ And when he was come into his house, he took a knife, and laid hold on his concubine, and divided her, together with her bones, into twelve pieces, and sent her into all the coasts of Israel. 30And it was so, that all that saw it said, There was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day: consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds.

Den otrogna bihustrun
1Vid den tiden, innan Israel hade någon kung, fanns det en man i Levis stam som bodde längst bort i Efraims bergsbygd. Han tog en kvinna från Betlehem i Juda med sig hem som bihustru. 2Men hon var otrogen och gick därifrån och återvände hem till sin far där hon bodde i fyra månader. 3Då gav sig hennes man iväg för att övertala henne att komma tillbaka och han tog med sig en tjänare och två åsnor. Hon bjöd in honom i sin fars hus och han var mycket glad att få träffa honom. 4Svärfadern, flickans far, bad honom att stanna och han blev kvar där i tre dagar. De åt och drack och sov över där.
5På den fjärde dagen var han tidigt uppe och gjorde sig färdig för att ge sig iväg, men flickans far ville att de skulle äta innan de gav sig iväg. 6De båda slog sig då ner och åt och drack tillsammans. Sedan bad han honom att stanna ännu en dag så att de kunde fortsätta att umgås. 7Först ville mannen gå, men eftersom hans svärfar var så angelägen, gav han slutligen med sig och stannade. 8På morgonen den femte dagen var de uppe tidigt igen för att ge sig iväg, men flickans far föreslog nu också: ”Du kan väl stanna till eftermiddagen och styrka dig med något.” Och de båda slog sig ner och åt. 9När han och hans hustru och tjänare sedan gjorde sig färdiga för avfärd, sa hans svärfar: ”Det börjar bli ganska sent. Stanna här i natt, så kan vi ha trevligt i kväll och sedan kan ni resa hem tidigt i morgon bitti.”
10Men nu gick mannen inte att övertala. Han gav sig iväg och med sina sadlade åsnor och med sin bihustru gick han mot Jevus, dvs. Jerusalem.
11De närmade sig Jevus mot kvällen. ”Nu är det sent”, sa hans tjänare till honom. ”Kan vi inte stanna här i jevuséernas stad i natt?”
12”Nej”, svarade mannen. ”Vi kan inte stanna i denna främmande stad där det inte finns några israeliter. Vi måste fortsätta till Giva.” 13Han sa vidare till sin tjänare: ”Vi kan försöka hinna fram till Giva eller Rama och övernatta på någon av de platserna.”
14De fortsatte alltså och solen gick ner just som de kom till Giva, en stad som tillhörde Benjamins stam. 15De drog in där för natten och stannade till på torget, men ingen erbjöd dem rum för natten. 16Då kom en gammal man förbi på väg hem från sitt arbete ute på fälten. Han var från Efraims bergsbygd men bodde nu i Giva där det för övrigt bara fanns benjaminiter. 17När han fick syn på de resande på torget, frågade han dem varifrån de kom och vart de skulle.
18”Vi är på väg hem från Betlehem i Juda”, svarade mannen. ”Vi ska längst bort i Efraims bergsbygd där jag bor. Jag har varit i Betlehem i Juda och är nu på väg till Herrens hus. Ingen har bjudit in oss över natten, 19men det går ingen nöd på oss, för vi har tillräckligt med foder åt våra åsnor och mat och dryck åt oss, dina tjänare – mig själv, min kvinna och den unge man som följer med mig.”
20”Du är välkommen till mitt hem”, sa den gamle mannen. ”Låt mig få sörja för alla dina behov! Här på torget kan ni ju inte stanna.”
21Han tog honom med sig hem, gav åsnorna att äta och resenärerna fick tvätta sina fötter. Sedan åt och drack de. 22Just som de satt där och mådde gott, kom en grupp onda män till huset och omringade det och började bulta på dörren. De ropade till den gamle mannen som ägde huset: ”Skicka ut mannen som kommit till ditt hus! Vi vill ligga med honom.” 23Värden gick ut för att samtala med dem.
”Nej, mina bröder, begå inte en sådan usel handling med min gäst! Gör inte en sådan skamlig gärning! 24Ta i stället min dotter som är oskuld och den här mannens bihustru! Jag ska föra ut dem till er, så kan ni kränka dem och göra vad ni vill med dem. Men ni får inte göra en sådan skamlig gärning mot denne man.”
25Men de ville inte höra på honom. Då tog den gästande mannen sin bihustru och förde ut henne till dem. De våldtog och kränkte henne hela natten och först i gryningen lät de henne gå. 26Hon kom i gryningen och föll ihop utanför huset där hennes man befann sig och låg där tills det blev ljust, 27och när hennes man på morgonen steg upp och öppnade dörren, fann han henne liggande där med händerna på tröskeln. 28”Res dig nu, så ska vi ge oss i väg”, sa han.
Men han fick inte något svar. Då lade han henne över åsnan och tog henne med sig hem. 29När han kom hem, tog han en kniv och styckade hennes kropp i tolv delar och sände en del till varje stam i Israel. 30Alla som såg det sa: ”Någonting så fruktansvärt har inte hänt sedan Israel lämnade Egypten. Begrunda det! Vi måste göra någonting åt det, men säg oss vad!”
