1In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel. 2And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.18.2 men of: Heb. sons of 3When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here? 4And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest. 5And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous. 6And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.
7¶ Then the five men departed, and came to Laish, and saw the people that were therein, how they dwelt careless, after the manner of the Zidonians, quiet and secure; and there was no magistrate in the land, that might put them to shame in any thing; and they were far from the Zidonians, and had no business with any man.18.7 Laish: also called, Leshem18.7 magistrate: Heb. possessor, or, heir of restraints 8And they came unto their brethren to Zorah and Eshtaol: and their brethren said unto them, What say ye? 9And they said, Arise, that we may go up against them: for we have seen the land, and, behold, it is very good: and are ye still? be not slothful to go, and to enter to possess the land. 10When ye go, ye shall come unto a people secure, and to a large land: for God hath given it into your hands; a place where there is no want of any thing that is in the earth.
11¶ And there went from thence of the family of the Danites, out of Zorah and out of Eshtaol, six hundred men appointed with weapons of war.18.11 appointed: Heb. girded 12And they went up, and pitched in Kirjath-jearim, in Judah: wherefore they called that place Mahaneh-dan unto this day: behold, it is behind Kirjath-jearim. 13And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.
14¶ Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do. 15And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.18.15 saluted…: Heb. asked him of peace 16And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate. 17And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war. 18And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye? 19And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel? 20And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people. 21So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.
22¶ And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan. 23And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?18.23 comest…: Heb. art gathered together? 24And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee? 25And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.18.25 angry: Heb. bitter of soul 26And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.
27And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire. 28And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Beth-rehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein. 29And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.
30¶ And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. 31And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

1Đến lúc ấy, Ít-ra-ên vẫn chưa có vua, và đại tộc Đan vẫn chưa chiếm được phần đất mình nên họ đang đi tìm một nơi lập nghiệp. 2Đại tộc này chọn năm người dũng cảm ở Xô-ra và Ê-ta-ôn, sai đi do thám đất.
Họ đến miền núi Ép-ra-im và nghỉ đêm tại nhà Mai-ca. 3Ở đó, họ nhận ra giọng nói quen thuộc của người Lê-vi, nên đem người này ra một nơi, và hỏi: “Ai đem ông đến đây? Ông đến có việc gì?” 4Người này kể cho họ nghe việc Mai-ca mướn mình làm thầy tế lễ.
5Nghe thế, họ yêu cầu: “Xin hãy cầu hỏi Đức Chúa Trời, xem thử chúng tôi đi chuyến này thành công không?”
6Thầy tế lễ đáp: “Các ông cứ an tâm, vì Chúa Hằng Hữu chăm sóc các ông trong chuyến đi này.”
7Vậy năm người ấy tiếp tục đi, đến La-ích, họ thấy dân ở đó sống lặng lẽ, an ổn, không phòng bị. Nếp sống của họ giống người Si-đôn; các nhà lãnh đạo không phiền nhiễu dân chúng. Tuy nhiên, họ sống xa cách người Si-đôn và không giao hảo với các dân tộc khác.
8Khi năm người trở về Xô-ra và Ê-ta-ôn, anh em hỏi họ: “Công việc do thám ra sao?”
9Họ đáp: “Chúng ta hãy lên đánh lấy xứ vì đây là một vùng đất rất tốt. Anh em tính sao? Đừng ngần ngại đi lên chiếm xứ làm sản nghiệp. 10Khi anh em đến đó, sẽ thấy một vùng đất phì nhiêu, rộng rãi, dân cư sống không phòng bị gì cả. Đức Chúa Trời cho ta đất này, một miền không thiếu thứ gì cả!”
11Vậy, 600 người thuộc đại tộc Đan có trang bị khí giới, khởi hành từ Xô-ra và Ê-ta-ôn. 12Họ đến đóng trại phía tây Ki-ri-át Giê-a-rim trong đất Giu-đa, vì thế, đến nay nơi này vẫn được gọi là Trại Quân Đan. 13Họ tiếp tục ra đi đến miền núi Ép-ra-im, đến nhà Mai-ca.
14Năm thám tử nói: “Trong nhà này có ê-phót, tượng thần, tượng đúc, và tượng chạm. Anh em biết phải hành động thế nào rồi chứ?” 15Sau đó, năm thám tử rẽ vào nhà Mai-ca, chào hỏi người Lê-vi trẻ tuổi tử tế. 16Còn 600 người lính thuộc đại tộc Đan đứng bên ngoài cổng. 17Sau đó, người Lê-vi đi ra, đứng với 600 lính ở ngoài cổng, còn năm thám tử cướp lấy tượng đúc, ê-phót, và tượng thần đem ra.
18Thấy năm người này cướp các vật ấy, thầy tế lễ người Lê-vi hỏi: “Các ông làm gì thế?”
19Họ bảo: “Im đi! Cứ theo chúng tôi, làm cha và thầy tế lễ cho chúng tôi. Làm thầy tế lễ cho cả một đại tộc Ít-ra-ên không hơn làm cho một nhà, một người sao?”
20Thầy tế lễ mừng quá, mang cả ê-phót, tượng thần, và tượng chạm, đi theo đám người ấy. 21Vậy họ tiếp tục lên đường. Trẻ con, gia súc, và hàng hóa được đưa đi trước.
22Khi những người thuộc đại tộc Đan rời nhà Mai-ca một khoảng khá xa, dân chúng sống gần Mai-ca cùng nhau đuổi theo. 23Nghe tiếng kêu la phía sau, người Đan quay lại, hỏi Mai-ca: “Có việc gì vậy? Ông dẫn những người này đuổi theo chúng tôi làm gì?”
24Mai-ca đáp: “Sao các người còn hỏi: ‘Có việc gì?’ Các người lấy đi thần tượng và cả thầy tế lễ của tôi, chẳng để lại gì cả!”
25Người Đan nói: “Im miệng đi! Nếu không, sẽ có người nổi giận, giết ông và cả nhà bây giờ.” 26Nói xong, người Đan tiếp tục đi. Mai-ca thấy họ đông và mạnh hơn bên mình nhiều quá, nên đành quay về.
27Như vậy, người Đan đoạt thần tượng và mọi thứ của Mai-ca, luôn cả thầy tế lễ người Lê-vi nữa, rồi họ đến La-ích, một thành có dân sống an ổn và không phòng bị. Họ xông vào chém giết và đốt thành. 28Chẳng có ai tiếp cứu người La-ích, vì họ ở khá xa Si-đôn và cũng không giao hảo với dân nào khác. Chuyện xảy ra trong thung lũng gần Bết-rê-hóp.
Rồi người Đan xây lại thành và sống ở đó. 29Họ lấy tên tổ tiên mình là Đan, con của Ít-ra-ên, đặt cho thành thay tên La-ích.
30Họ dựng tượng lên, bổ nhiệm Giô-na-than, con Ghẹt-sôn, cháu Môi-se, và các con ông ấy làm thầy tế lễ cho đại tộc mình. Gia đình này tiếp tục giữ chức tế lễ trong đại tộc Đan cho đến ngày bị lưu Đày. 31Như vậy, trong khi có Đền Tạm của Đức Chúa Trời ở tại Si-lô, người Đan lại đi thờ thần tượng của Mai-ca làm ra.
