1And king Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned instead of Coniah the son of Jehoiakim, whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah. 2But neither he, nor his servants, nor the people of the land, did hearken unto the words of the LORD, which he spake by the prophet Jeremiah.37.2 by…: Heb. by the hand of the prophet 3And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah, saying, Pray now unto the LORD our God for us. 4Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people: for they had not put him into prison. 5Then Pharaoh’s army was come forth out of Egypt: and when the Chaldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them, they departed from Jerusalem.
6¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 7Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel; Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah, that sent you unto me to enquire of me; Behold, Pharaoh’s army, which is come forth to help you, shall return to Egypt into their own land. 8And the Chaldeans shall come again, and fight against this city, and take it, and burn it with fire. 9Thus saith the LORD; Deceive not yourselves, saying, The Chaldeans shall surely depart from us: for they shall not depart.37.9 yourselves: Heb. your souls 10For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Chaldeans that fight against you, and there remained but wounded men among them, yet should they rise up every man in his tent, and burn this city with fire.37.10 wounded: Heb. thrust through
11¶ And it came to pass, that when the army of the Chaldeans was broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaoh’s army,37.11 broken…: Heb. made to ascend 12Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin, to separate himself thence in the midst of the people.37.12 separate…: or, to slip away from thence in the midst of the people 13And when he was in the gate of Benjamin, a captain of the ward was there, whose name was Irijah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he took Jeremiah the prophet, saying, Thou fallest away to the Chaldeans. 14Then said Jeremiah, It is false; I fall not away to the Chaldeans. 16¶ When Jeremiah was entered into the dungeon, and into the cabins, and Jeremiah had remained there many days;37.16 cabins: or, cells 17Then Zedekiah the king sent, and took him out: and the king asked him secretly in his house, and said, Is there any word from the LORD? And Jeremiah said, There is: for, said he, thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon. 18Moreover Jeremiah said unto king Zedekiah, What have I offended against thee, or against thy servants, or against this people, that ye have put me in prison? 19Where are now your prophets which prophesied unto you, saying, The king of Babylon shall not come against you, nor against this land? 20Therefore hear now, I pray thee, O my lord the king: let my supplication, I pray thee, be accepted before thee; that thou cause me not to return to the house of Jonathan the scribe, lest I die there.37.20 let…: Heb. let my supplication fall 21Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah into the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread out of the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city were spent. 西底迦求耶利米代祷
1巴比伦王尼布甲尼撒立约西亚的儿子西底迦代替约雅敬的儿子哥尼雅做犹大王。 2西底迦和他的臣仆及人民却没有听从耶和华借耶利米先知说的话。 3西底迦王派示利米雅的儿子犹甲和玛西雅的儿子祭司西番雅来对耶利米先知说：“求你为我们向我们的上帝耶和华祷告。” 4当时，耶利米还可以自由来往，没有被他们囚在狱中。 5那时，法老的军队已从埃及出发，正在围攻耶路撒冷的迦勒底人听见消息就退兵了。
6耶和华对耶利米先知说： 7“这是以色列的上帝耶和华的话，‘犹大王派你们来求问我，你们告诉他，前来支援你们的法老军队必中途返回埃及， 8而迦勒底人必卷土重来，攻占这城，将它付之一炬。 9耶和华说，你们不要自欺，以为迦勒底人必撤军。其实他们不会撤军。 10即使你们能打败迦勒底全军，他们营中受伤的残兵也必起来烧毁这城。’”
11当迦勒底人因害怕法老的军队而撤军的时候， 12耶利米起身离开耶路撒冷，前往便雅悯境内去接收他在同族中应得的地业。 13当耶利米先知来到便雅悯门时，哈拿尼亚的孙子、示利米雅的儿子守门官伊利雅逮捕了他，说：“你想去投奔迦勒底人！” 14耶利米说：“不，我不是去投奔迦勒底人。”但伊利雅不信，把他押到众官长那里。 15官长们大怒，命人鞭打耶利米，把他囚禁在书记约拿单的房子里，因为他们已把这房子改作监牢。 16耶利米被囚禁在地牢中许多天。
17后来，西底迦王派人把他带到自己的宫中，私下问他：“耶和华有什么话给你吗？”耶利米说：“有，你要被交在巴比伦王手中。” 18耶利米又问他：“我在什么事上得罪了你、你的臣仆或人民，以致你们把我囚在监牢中？ 19那些曾向你们预言‘巴比伦王绝不会来这里攻打你们’的先知如今在哪里呢？ 20现在，我主我王啊，请听我说！求你不要把我送回书记约拿单的房子，免得我死在那里。”
21于是，西底迦王下令把耶利米囚在护卫兵的院子里，派人每天从饼铺取一个饼给他，直到城中绝粮。耶利米就这样住在护卫兵的院子里。
