1And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Syria, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up toward Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. 2And it was told the house of David, saying, Syria is confederate with Ephraim. And the LORD added to speak 11Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.7.11 ask it…: or, make thy petition deep 12But Ahaz said, I will not ask, neither will I tempt the LORD. 13And he said, Hear ye now, O house of David; Is it a small thing for you to weary men, but will ye weary my God also? 14Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.7.14 shall call: or, thou, O virgin, shalt call 15Butter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil, and choose the good. 16For before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land that thou abhorrest shall be forsaken of both her kings.
17¶ The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria. 18And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. 19And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the desolate valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all bushes.7.19 bushes: or, commendable trees 20In the same day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired, namely, by them beyond the river, by the king of Assyria, the head, and the hair of the feet: and it shall also consume the beard. 21And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall nourish a young cow, and two sheep; 22And it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give he shall eat butter: for butter and honey shall every one eat that is left in the land.7.22 the land: Heb. the midst of the land 23And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place shall be, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, it shall even be for briers and thorns. 24With arrows and with bows shall men come thither; because all the land shall become briers and thorns. 25And on all hills that shall be digged with the mattock, there shall not come thither the fear of briers and thorns: but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of lesser cattle.
L’appel à la foi
1Sous le règne d’Ahaz, fils de Yotam et petit-fils d’Ozias, roi de Juda, Retsîn, roi de Syrie, se mit en campagne avec Péqah, fils de Remalia, roi d’Israël, pour faire la guerre à Jérusalem7.1 Vers 735734 av. J.-C. Voir 2 R 16.5-9 ; 2 Ch 28.5-8. La Syrie et Israël (ou Ephraïm, c’est-à-dire le royaume du Nord) s’étaient alliés contre l’Assyrie et voulaient remplacer Ahaz par un homme à eux (v. 6) qui joindrait Juda à leur coalition.. Mais ils ne purent finalement pas l’attaquer.
2Quand on apprit, à la cour du royaume de David, que les Syriens avaient pris position en territoire éphraïmite, le roi et tous ses sujets en furent secoués comme le feuillage des arbres de la forêt quand ils sont agités par le vent.
3Alors l’Eternel dit à Esaïe : Va à la rencontre d’Ahaz, toi et Shear-Yashoub7.3 Nom qui signifie : un reste reviendra, expression qui se retrouve en 10.21 comme promesse pour le peuple., ton fils. Tu le trouveras vers l’extrémité de l’aqueduc du réservoir supérieur, sur la route du champ du Teinturier7.3 Voir 2 R 18.17.. 4Tu lui diras : Garde ton calme. N’aie donc pas peur et ne perds pas courage devant ces deux bouts de tisons fumants, devant la fureur de Retsîn et de son pays, la Syrie, et du fils de Remalia. 5La Syrie, il est vrai, projette un malheur contre toi de concert avec Ephraïm7.5 Voir note v. 1. et le fils de Remalia, et ils ont dit : 6Marchons contre Juda, jetons-y l’épouvante, conquérons-le, établissons-y comme roi le fils de Tabéel7.6 Nom araméen. Probablement un haut fonctionnaire de la cour de Damas que les Syriens voulaient imposer comme roi à Juda pour qu’il entraîne son pays dans la coalition qu’ils formaient avec le royaume d’Israël du Nord.. 7Mais ainsi parle le Seigneur, l’Eternel :
Cela ne tiendra pas,
cela ne sera pas,
8car c’est Damas la capitale ╵de la Syrie,
et c’est Retsîn ╵qui est chef de Damas.
Dans soixante-cinq ans,
Ephraïm sera écrasé ╵et n’existera plus ╵en tant que peuple.
9La capitale d’Ephraïm ╵c’est Samarie,
le chef de Samarie ╵c’est le fils de Remalia.
Si vous, vous n’avez pas confiance,
vous ne tiendrez pas.
Le signe d’Emmanuel
10L’Eternel parla de nouveau à Ahaz et lui dit : 11Demande pour toi un signe extraordinaire à l’Eternel, ton Dieu, soit dans les régions d’en bas, soit dans les lieux élevés.
12Mais Ahaz dit : Je n’en demanderai pas. Je ne veux pas forcer la main à l’Eternel.
13Esaïe dit alors : Ecoutez donc, dynastie de David. Ne vous suffit-il pas de mettre à dure épreuve la patience des hommes pour qu’il vous faille encore lasser celle de mon Dieu ? 14C’est pourquoi le Seigneur vous donnera lui-même un signe : Voici, la jeune fille sera enceinte et elle enfantera un fils, elle lui donnera pour nom7.14 Le texte hébreu de Qumrân a : il lui donnera ou ils lui donneront. : Emmanuel (Dieu avec nous)7.14 Voir 8.8, 10. Ce verset est cité en Mt 1.23.. 15Il mangera du lait caillé et du miel7.15 Voir v. 21-22., jusqu’à ce qu’il apprenne à rejeter le mal et à choisir le bien. 16Mais avant que l’enfant apprenne à rejeter le mal et à choisir le bien, les pays des deux rois que tu crains aujourd’hui seront abandonnés. 17L’Eternel fera survenir contre toi et ton peuple, contre ta dynastie, des jours comme jamais il n’y en a eu de tels depuis l’époque où Ephraïm s’est coupé de Juda : ce sera l’effet du roi d’Assyrie.
Le péril assyrien
18Il adviendra, en ce jour-là, que l’Eternel appellera par un coup de sifflet les mouches qui sont à l’extrémité des fleuves de l’Egypte et les abeilles d’Assyrie. 19Elles viendront et se poseront toutes dans les ravins abrupts, et dans les fentes des rochers, dans tous les fourrés broussailleux et tous les pâturages. 20En ce jour-là, le Seigneur rasera avec un rasoir pris à gage au-delà de l’Euphrate – il s’agit du roi d’Assyrie. Oui, il vous rasera la tête et tous les poils du corps, et il vous coupera aussi la barbe7.20 Signe de déshonneur ou de deuil (Jb 1.20 ; Es 15.2 ; Jr 48.37 ; 2 S 10.4-5), annonce de la captivité..
21Il adviendra, en ce jour-là, qu’en guise de bétail, une personne élèvera une génisse et deux brebis ou chèvres7.21 On ne cultivera plus le sol, on reviendra à l’élevage. Les rescapés seront si peu nombreux qu’ils auront du lait et du miel en abondance, malgré un cheptel réduit.. 22Alors la production de lait sera si abondante que l’on se nourrira de lait caillé. Oui, les survivants du pays mangeront tous du lait caillé et du miel. 23Il adviendra encore, en ce jour-là, que tout endroit planté de mille ceps de vigne valant mille pièces d’argent, sera abandonné aux ronces et aux épines. 24On y pénétrera armé d’arcs et de flèches, car le pays entier ne sera que ronces et épines. 25On ne passera plus sur les coteaux fertiles qu’on sarclait à la pioche, par peur des ronces et des épines. Les bovins y paîtront et les moutons et les chèvres en fouleront le sol.
