1And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD. 2And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz. 3And they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of blasphemy: for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.37.3 blasphemy: or, provocation 4It may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God, and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left.37.4 left: Heb. found 5So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.
6¶ And Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. 7Behold, I will send a blast upon him, and he shall hear a rumour, and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.37.7 send…: or, put a spirit into him
8¶ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah: for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish. 9And he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying, 10Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria. 11Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly; and shalt thou be delivered? 12Have the gods of the nations delivered them which my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the children of Eden which were in Telassar? 13Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arphad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, Hena, and Ivah?
14¶ And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it: and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. 15And Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying, 16O LORD of hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth. 17Incline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see: and hear all the words of Sennacherib, which hath sent to reproach the living God. 18Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations, and their countries,37.18 nations: Heb. lands 19And have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone: therefore they have destroyed them.37.19 cast: Heb. given 20Now therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.
21¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: 22This is the word which the LORD hath spoken concerning him; The virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn; the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee. 23Whom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice, and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel. 24By thy servants hast thou reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the sides of Lebanon; and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice fir trees thereof: and I will enter into the height of his border, and the forest of his Carmel.37.24 By thy…: Heb. 37¶ So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh. 38And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Armenia: and Esar-haddon his son reigned in his stead.37.38 Armenia: Heb. Herren ska befria Jerusalem
(2 Kung 19:1-19)
1När kung Hiskia fick höra detta, rev han också sönder sina kläder och klädde sig i säcktyg. Sedan gick han till Herrens hus. 2Han sände Eljakim, chefen för palatset, kungens sekreterare Shevna och de äldste bland prästerna, alla klädda i säcktyg, till profeten Jesaja, Amos son. 3De sa till honom:
”Så säger Hiskia: ’Det här är en nödens, bestraffningens och skammens dag. Barnen ska födas, men det finns ingen kraft att föda. 4Men kanske Herren, din Gud, hör vad den assyriske befälhavaren säger, han som hans herre, den assyriske kungen, har sänt för att håna den levande Guden. Herren, din Gud, ska nog straffa honom för dessa ord som han hört. Be därför för den rest som finns kvar!’ ”
5När kung Hiskias tjänare kom till Jesaja 6svarade han dem: ”Säg till er herre: Så säger Herren: ’Var inte rädd för vad du har hört, hädelser av den assyriske kungens tjänare. 7Se, jag ska inge honom att lyssna till ett rykte så att han återvänder till sitt eget land, och där ska jag låta honom bli dödad med svärd.’ ”
8Den assyriske befälhavaren vände tillbaka och fann den assyriske kungen i en strid mot Livna; han hade nämligen hört att denne hade lämnat Lakish.
9Sanherib nåddes av ett meddelande att Tirhaka, kungen av Kush, gått till anfall mot honom. Återigen skickade den assyriske kungen iväg sändebud med ett meddelande till kung Hiskia: 10”Så här ska ni säga till Hiskia, kungen av Juda: ’Låt inte din Gud som du förtröstar på lura dig till att tro att Jerusalem inte ska falla i den assyriske kungens händer.’ 11Du har ju hört vad de assyriska kungarna har gjort med alla länder, hur totalt de förintat dem. Skulle du då bli räddad? 12Blev de folk som mina förfäder förgjorde, Gosan, Harran, Resef, och Edens folk i Telassar, räddade av sina gudar? 13Var är kungen av Hamat, kungen av Arpad och kungarna av Sefarvajim, Hena och Avva?”
Hiskias bön
14När Hiskia hade mottagit brevet av sändebuden och läst det, gick han till Herrens hus och bredde ut det inför Herren 15och bad: 16”Härskarornas Herre, Israels Gud, du tronar över keruberna, du ensam är Gud och råder över alla riken på jorden. Du har gjort himmel och jord. 17Hör, Herre, lyssna! Öppna dina ögon, Herre, och se! Hör hur Sanherib hädar den levande Guden i sitt brev som han har skickat.
18Det är sant, Herre, att kungarna i Assyrien har ödelagt alla dessa folks länder 19och kastat deras gudar i elden. Men de var ju inga gudar utan människohänders verk av trä och sten. Därför kunde de förgöra dem. 20Herre, vår Gud, rädda oss ur hans makt, så att alla riken på jorden förstår att endast du är Herren, den ende!”
Herren ska krossa Sanherib
(2 Kung 19:20-34)
21Jesaja, Amos son, skickade då detta budskap till Hiskia: ”Så säger Herren, Israels Gud: Jag har hört din bön som du har bett angående Sanherib, Assyriens kung. 22Och det här är vad Herren har talat mot honom:
Jungfrun, dottern Sion, föraktar och hånar dig,
dottern Jerusalem skakar på huvudet åt dig.
23Vem har du hånat och smädat?
Mot vem har du höjt rösten
och kastat högmodiga blickar?
Mot Israels Helige!
24Genom dina tjänare har du
hädat Herren.
Du sa: ’Med mina många vagnar
har jag bestigit bergens höjder
och Libanons utkanter,
huggit ner dess högsta cedrar
och dess bästa cypresser.
Jag har tagit mig fram till dess bortersta höjder
och dess finaste skogar.
25Jag grävde brunnar
och drack deras vatten,
med mina fötter torkade jag ut
alla floder i Egypten.’
26Har du inte hört
att jag bestämde detta för länge sedan,
planerade det i en fjärran tid?
Nu har jag låtit det inträffa,
och du fick ödelägga befästa städer.
27Deras invånare blev maktlösa,
förskräckta och skamsna.
De var som plantor på åkern,
den spirande grönskan,
som gräs på taken,
som förbränns innan det växer upp.
28Men jag vet om du står eller sitter,
går ut eller kommer in
och hur du rasar mot mig.
29Därför att du rasar mot mig
och ditt högmod har nått mina öron,
ska jag sätta en krok i din näsa
och ett betsel i din mun
och leda dig tillbaka samma väg som du kom.
30Detta ska vara tecknet för dig, Hiskia:
I år ska ni få äta självvuxen säd,
och nästa år det som växer därifrån.
Men det tredje året ska ni så och skörda,
plantera vingårdar och äta deras frukt.
31Än en gång ska den räddade rest som är kvar av Juda slå rot och bära frukt.
32För en rest ska komma från Jerusalem, de räddade från Sions berg.
Härskarornas Herres lidelse ska göra detta.
33Därför säger Herren om kungen av Assyrien:
Han ska inte komma in i denna stad,
inte skjuta någon pil ditin,
inte gå fram i skydd av någon sköld
eller bygga någon vall mot den.
34Han ska vända tillbaka samma väg som han kom,
och han ska inte komma in i denna stad, säger Herren.
35Jag ska försvara och rädda denna stad för min
och min tjänare Davids skull.”
Jerusalem räddas och Sanherib får sitt straff
(2 Kung 19:35-37; 2 Krön 32:21)
36Herrens ängel gick ut och dödade 185 000 man i assyriernas läger, och på morgonen låg det döda kroppar överallt. 37Då bröt Sanherib, kungen av Assyrien, upp, vände tillbaka och stannade i Nineve.
38En gång när han tillbad i sin gud Nisroks tempel, dödade hans söner Adrammelek och Sareser honom med svärd. De flydde sedan till Ararat, och hans son Assarhaddon blev kung efter honom.
