1Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah, and took them. 2And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field. 3Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.36.3 scribe: or, secretary
4¶ And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein thou trustest? 5I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust, that thou rebellest against me?36.5 vain…: Heb. a word of lips36.5 I have…: or, but counsel and strength are for the war 6Lo, thou trustest in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; whereon if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him. 7But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar? 8Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou be able on thy part to set riders upon them.36.8 pledges: or, hostages 9How then wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put thy trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said unto me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.
11¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.
12¶ But Rabshakeh said, Hath my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? hath he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own piss with you? 13Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria. 14Thus saith the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you. 15Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria. 16Hearken not to Hezekiah: for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat ye every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink ye every one the waters of his own cistern;36.16 Make…: or, Seek my favour by a present: Heb. Make with me a blessing 17Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? 19Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand? 20Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand? 21But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.
22¶ Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.

1La quatorzième année du règne d’Ezéchias36.1 C’est-à-dire en 701 av. J.-C. Sennachérib, fils de Sargon II, régna de 704 à 681 av. J.-C., Sennachérib, roi d’Assyrie, vint attaquer toutes les villes fortifiées de Juda et s’en empara. 2Le roi d’Assyrie envoya de Lakish36.2 Entre Jérusalem et Gaza, à environ 35 kilomètres au sud-ouest de Jérusalem. à Jérusalem vers le roi Ezéchias, son aide de camp, accompagné d’une puissante armée. Il prit position près de l’aqueduc du réservoir supérieur, sur la route du champ du Teinturier36.2 L’aqueduc est sans doute le canal souterrain qu’Ezéchias a fait creuser (2 R 20.20) pour amener l’eau de la source du Guihôn (1 R 1.33) au réservoir de Siloé, au sud-est de la ville. Le champ du Teinturier devait se trouver près d’Eyn-Roguel, au sud de Jérusalem (voir 2 S 17.17 ; 1 R 1.9 ; Es 7.3)..
3Alors Eliaqim, fils de Hilqiya, qui avait la charge du palais royal, Shebna le secrétaire du roi et Yoah, fils d’Asaph l’archiviste, sortirent de la ville à sa rencontre. 4L’aide de camp du roi d’Assyrie leur dit : Veuillez transmettre ce message à Ezéchias : « Voici ce que déclare le grand roi, le roi d’Assyrie : En quoi mets-tu ta confiance ? 5T’imaginerais-tu36.5 D’après plusieurs manuscrits hébreux, le texte hébreu de Qumrân et 2 R 18.20. La plupart des manuscrits du texte hébreu traditionnel ont : je dis. que de simples paroles peuvent tenir lieu de stratégie et de puissance militaire ? Sur qui comptes-tu donc pour t’être révolté contre moi ? 6Tu t’appuies sur l’Egypte, ce roseau cassé qui blesse et qui transperce la main de celui qui s’appuie dessus. Oui, c’est bien là ce qu’est le pharaon, le roi d’Egypte, pour tous ceux qui se confient en lui ! 7Peut-être me diras-tu : “C’est en l’Eternel, notre Dieu, que nous nous confions.” Mais n’est-ce pas précisément ce Dieu dont Ezéchias a fait disparaître les hauts lieux et les autels, en disant aux habitants de Juda et de Jérusalem de rendre leur culte uniquement devant cet autel-ci ? 8Je te lance aujourd’hui un défi au nom de mon souverain, le roi d’Assyrie : Je te donnerai deux mille chevaux, si toi tu es capable de fournir autant d’hommes pour les monter. 9Comment t’y prendrais-tu pour repousser un seul de nos capitaines, même si c’était le moindre des serviteurs de mon maître ? Comptes-tu sur l’Egypte pour te fournir des chars avec leur équipage ? 10D’ailleurs crois-tu que c’est sans l’assentiment de l’Eternel que je suis venu attaquer ce pays pour le détruire ? C’est l’Eternel qui m’a dit : “Va dans ce pays et détruis-le36.10 Voir Es 7.20 ; 10.5-6. !” »
11Alors Eliaqim, Shebna et Yoah dirent à l’aide de camp assyrien : Voudrais-tu, s’il te plaît, parler à tes serviteurs en langue araméenne36.11 Langue diplomatique de l’époque que parlaient les hauts fonctionnaires. Elle deviendra la langue commune des Juifs à partir du ve siècle av. J.-C., car nous la comprenons. Ne nous parle pas en hébreu, alors que les gens sont là, sur les remparts, à écouter !
12Mais l’aide de camp répliqua : Crois-tu que c’est à ton souverain et à toi seulement que mon souverain m’a chargé d’adresser ce message ? Crois-tu que ce n’est pas aussi à ces gens assis sur les remparts, qui seront bientôt réduits avec vous à manger leurs excréments et à boire leur urine ?
13Puis l’aide de camp se campa là et se mit à crier d’une voix forte, en hébreu : Ecoutez ce que dit le grand roi, le roi d’Assyrie : 14« Ainsi parle le roi : Ne vous laissez pas tromper par Ezéchias. Car il ne peut pas vous délivrer. 15Ne vous laissez pas persuader par Ezéchias de vous confier en l’Eternel, s’il vous dit : “Sûrement, l’Eternel nous délivrera, cette ville ne tombera pas aux mains du roi d’Assyrie.” 16N’écoutez pas Ezéchias ; car voici ce que vous propose le roi d’Assyrie : Faites la paix avec moi, rendez-vous à moi ! Alors chacun de vous mangera les fruits de sa vigne et de son figuier36.16 Expression commune caractérisant la vie paisible et prospère (1 R 5.5 ; Os 2.14 ; Mi 4.4 ; Za 3.10)., et chacun boira de l’eau de son puits, 17en attendant que je vienne vous emmener dans un pays pareil au vôtre, un pays où il y a du blé et du vin, du pain et des vignes. 18Ne laissez pas Ezéchias vous tromper en disant : “L’Eternel nous délivrera.” Les dieux des autres peuples ont-ils délivré leur pays du roi d’Assyrie ? 19Où sont les dieux de Hamath et d’Arpad ? Où sont les dieux de Sepharvaïm36.19 Villes de Syrie. ? Ont-ils délivré Samarie ?
20De tous les dieux de ces pays, quels sont ceux qui ont délivré leur pays, pour que l’Eternel délivre Jérusalem ? »
21Ils gardèrent le silence, et ne lui répondirent pas un mot, car le roi avait donné cet ordre : « Vous ne lui répondrez pas. » 22Alors Eliaqim, fils de Hilqiya, qui avait la charge du palais, Shebna le secrétaire, et Yoah, fils d’Asaph l’archiviste, retournèrent auprès d’Ezéchias, les vêtements déchirés, et lui rapportèrent les paroles de l’aide de camp.
