1For every high priest taken from among men is ordained for men in things pertaining to God, that he may offer both gifts and sacrifices for sins: 2Who can have compassion on the ignorant, and on them that are out of the way; for that he himself also is compassed with infirmity. 3And by reason hereof he ought, as for the people, so also for himself, to offer for sins. 4And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron. 5So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. 6As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec. 7Who in the days of his flesh, when he had offered up prayers and supplications with strong crying and tears unto him that was able to save him from death, and was heard in that he feared; 8Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; 9And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; 10Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec.
11Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing. 12For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat. 13For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
1-3O sumo sacerdote é um homem como qualquer outro, mas constituído para representar os homens nas suas relações com Deus. Por isso, apresenta as ofertas a Deus e oferece sacrifícios pelos pecados, tanto do povo como dos seus. E como ele mesmo está sujeito à fraqueza humana, pode tratar com toda a bondade aqueles que pecam, seja por ignorância, seja por desobediência.
4E ninguém se torna sumo sacerdote somente porque deseja tal honra. Tem de ser chamado por Deus, tal como Aarão. 5Assim Cristo, da mesma maneira, não se glorificou a si próprio como sumo sacerdote, mas foi Deus quem o instituiu nessa dignidade, dizendo-lhe:
“Tu és meu Filho;
hoje tornei-me teu Pai.”5.5 Sl 2.7.
6E lemos ainda noutro lugar:
“Tu és sacerdote para sempre,
à semelhança de Melquisedeque.”5.6 Sl 110.4.
7Cristo, enquanto ainda estava na Terra, numa agonia de alma, apresentou orações e súplicas a Deus, que o poderia ter livrado daquela morte. E Deus ouviu-o, atendendo à sua submissão. 8Jesus, ainda que sendo o Filho, ele próprio experimentou o que era a obediência por aquilo que padeceu. 9E foi por Deus qualificado como perfeita fonte de eterna salvação para todos os que lhe obedecem. 10Deus mesmo o reconhece como sumo sacerdote, à semelhança de Melquisedeque.
Uma chamada ao crescimento espiritual
11Muito mais teríamos a dizer sobre isto. Contudo, não é fácil explicar-vos estas coisas, pois têm-se tornado preguiçosos na vossa compreensão. 12Porque, pelo tempo, já deviam até poder ensinar outros. Em vez disso, precisam de quem vos ensine as primeiras coisas da revelação de Deus. Fizeram-se como criancinhas que só podem tomar leite e não alimento sólido. 13Quando uma pessoa se alimenta só de leite é como um bebé e ainda não está capaz de experimentar as coisas que a justiça de Deus exige. 14Mas o alimento sólido é para os que adquiriram maturidade e que, em resultado do exercício das suas faculdades, são capazes de distinguir o bem do mal.
