1And when the seventh month was come, and the children of Israel were in the cities, the people gathered themselves together as one man to Jerusalem. 2Then stood up Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and his brethren the priests, and Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and his brethren, and builded the altar of the God of Israel, to offer burnt offerings thereon, as it is written in the law of Moses the man of God.3.2 Jeshua: also called, Joshua3.2 Zerubbabel: Gr. 8¶ Now in the second year of their coming unto the house of God at Jerusalem, in the second month, began Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and the remnant of their brethren the priests and the Levites, and all they that were come out of the captivity unto Jerusalem; and appointed the Levites, from twenty years old and upward, to set forward the work of the house of the LORD. 9Then stood Jeshua with his sons and his brethren, Kadmiel and his sons, the sons of Judah, together, to set forward the workmen in the house of God: the sons of Henadad, with their sons and their brethren the Levites.3.9 Judah: also called, Hodaviah3.9 together: Heb. as one 10And when the builders laid the foundation of the temple of the LORD, they set the priests in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites the sons of Asaph with cymbals, to praise the LORD, after the ordinance of David king of Israel. 11And they sang together by course in praising and giving thanks unto the LORD; because he is good, for his mercy endureth for ever toward Israel. And all the people shouted with a great shout, when they praised the LORD, because the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid. 12But many of the priests and Levites and chief of the fathers, who were ancient men, that had seen the first house, when the foundation of this house was laid before their eyes, wept with a loud voice; and many shouted aloud for joy: 13So that the people could not discern the noise of the shout of joy from the noise of the weeping of the people: for the people shouted with a loud shout, and the noise was heard afar off.
Start van de herbouw van de tempel
1In het begin van de zevende maand reisde iedereen die naar Juda was teruggekeerd, naar Jeruzalem. 2Het altaar van de God van Israël werd herbouwd door Jesua, de zoon van Jozadak, en zijn broers, de priesters, en door Zerubbabel, de zoon van Sealthiël, en zijn broers. Eindelijk kon het weer worden gebruikt om brandoffers te brengen zoals was voorgeschreven in de wet die Mozes van God had gekregen. 3Ondanks hun angst voor de bevolking werd het altaar op zijn vroegere fundamenten herbouwd en brachten ze er meteen brandoffers op, zowel die voor de ochtend als voor de avond. 4Ook het Loofhuttenfeest werd gevierd zoals in de wet van Mozes was voorgeschreven. Op elke dag van het feest brachten zij het vereiste aantal brandoffers. 5De teruggekeerde ballingen begonnen met het brengen van het dagelijks brandoffer, ook het brandoffer voor elke nieuwe maand en voor alle feesten voor de Here werd weer ingesteld. De mensen brachten daar ook hun vrijwillige offers aan de Here. 6Vanaf de eerste dag van die maand brachten de priesters weer brandoffers aan de Here. Dit gebeurde vóórdat het fundament van de tempel van de Here werd gelegd. 7De Israëlieten huurden steenhouwers en timmerlieden en kochten cederhout van de inwoners van Tyrus en Sidon in ruil voor voedsel, drank en olijfolie. Het hout werd uit de bergen van de Libanon gehaald en over zee naar Jafo vervoerd. Dit gebeurde met toestemming van koning Kores. 8In de tweede maand van het tweede jaar na aankomst in Jeruzalem begon de bouw van de tempel. Alle ex-ballingen werkten mee. De leiding was in handen van Zerubbabel, de zoon van Sealthiël en Jesua, de zoon van Jozadak, en hun broers, de priesters en de Levieten. Zij stelden de Levieten van twintig jaar en ouder aan om toezicht te houden op de bouw van het huis van de Here. 9Het toezicht op de hele onderneming kregen Jesua met zijn zonen en broers, Kadmiël met zijn zonen, alle Judeeërs en ook Henadad met zijn zonen en broers uit de stam van Levi. 10Toen de bouwlieden klaar waren met fundering van de tempel, trokken de priesters hun priesterkleding aan en bliezen op trompetten. Asafs nakomelingen, ook Levieten, sloegen de bekkens en prezen de Here. Dit gebeurde volgens de voorschriften van koning David. 11In beurtzang zongen zij lofliederen voor de Here. ‘Hij is goed en zijn goedheid en trouw aan Israël zullen blijven tot in eeuwigheid!’ klonk het. Het hele volk begon luid te juichen en loofde de Here omdat de fundamenten van de tempel waren gelegd. 12Maar er waren ook veel oudere priesters, Levieten en familiehoofden aanwezig die de vroegere tempel in al zijn glorie hadden gekend. Zij huilden luid bij het zien van de fundamenten, terwijl anderen het uitjubelden van vreugde! 13Huilen en juichen klonken door elkaar. Het geluid was tot in de verre omtrek te horen.
