1The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying, 2Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother: 3And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity. 4And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. 22¶ Therefore, O Aholibah, thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will raise up thy lovers against thee, from whom thy mind is alienated, and I will bring them against thee on every side; 23The Babylonians, and all the Chaldeans, Pekod, and Shoa, and Koa, and all the Assyrians with them: all of them desirable young men, captains and rulers, great lords and renowned, all of them riding upon horses. 24And they shall come against thee with chariots, wagons, and wheels, and with an assembly of people, which shall set against thee buckler and shield and helmet round about: and I will set judgment before them, and they shall judge thee according to their judgments. 25And I will set my jealousy against thee, and they shall deal furiously with thee: they shall take away thy nose and thine ears; and thy remnant shall fall by the sword: they shall take thy sons and thy daughters; and thy residue shall be devoured by the fire. 26They shall also strip thee out of thy clothes, and take away thy fair jewels.23.26 fair…: Heb. instruments of thy decking 27Thus will I make thy lewdness to cease from thee, and thy whoredom brought from the land of Egypt: so that thou shalt not lift up thine eyes unto them, nor remember Egypt any more. 28For thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will deliver thee into the hand of them whom thou hatest, into the hand of them from whom thy mind is alienated: 29And they shall deal with thee hatefully, and shall take away all thy labour, and shall leave thee naked and bare: and the nakedness of thy whoredoms shall be discovered, both thy lewdness and thy whoredoms. 30I will do these things unto thee, because thou hast gone a whoring after the heathen, and because thou art polluted with their idols. 31Thou hast walked in the way of thy sister; therefore will I give her cup into thine hand. 32Thus saith the Lord GOD; Thou shalt drink of thy sister’s cup deep and large: thou shalt be laughed to scorn and had in derision; it containeth much. 33Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria. 34Thou shalt even drink it and suck it out, and thou shalt break the sherds thereof, and pluck off thine own breasts: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord GOD. 35Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Because thou hast forgotten me, and cast me behind thy back, therefore bear thou also thy lewdness and thy whoredoms.
36¶ The LORD said moreover unto me; Son of man, wilt thou judge Aholah and Aholibah? yea, declare unto them their abominations;23.36 judge: or, plead for 37That they have committed adultery, and blood is in their hands, and with their idols have they committed adultery, and have also caused their sons, whom they bare unto me, to pass for them through the fire, to devour them. 38Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths. 39For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house. 40And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger was sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments,23.40 to come: Heb. coming 41And satest upon a stately bed, and a table prepared before it, whereupon thou hast set mine incense and mine oil.23.41 stately: Heb. honourable 42And a voice of a multitude being at ease was with her: and with the men of the common sort were brought Sabeans from the wilderness, which put bracelets upon their hands, and beautiful crowns upon their heads.23.42 of the…: Heb. of the multitude of men23.42 Sabeans: or, drunkards 43Then said I unto her that was old in adulteries, Will they now commit whoredoms with her, and she with them?23.43 whoredoms…: Heb. her whoredoms 44Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah, the lewd women.

Het verhaal van de twee zusters
1Opnieuw kreeg ik een boodschap van de Here: 2-3 ‘Mensenzoon, er waren eens twee zusters die zich vanaf hun jeugd als prostituees in Egypte hadden aangeboden. In dat land werden hun maagdelijke borsten voor het eerst gekust en betast. 4-5 De oudste heette Ohola, haar zuster Oholiba. Ik heb het nu over Samaria en Jeruzalem! Ik trouwde met hen en zij gaven Mij zonen en dochters. Maar toen verkocht Ohola zich als prostituee aan anderen terwijl ze nog van Mij was en ze schonk haar liefde aan de Assyriërs, haar buren. 6Dat waren allemaal aantrekkelijke jonge soldaten, bevelhebbers en commandanten, gekleed in prachtige blauwe kleding en geoefende ruiters. 7Zo zondigde zij met hen, de beste mannen van Assyrië, en verontreinigde zichzelf door afgoden te aanbidden. 8Want toen zij Egypte verliet, nam zij haar overspelige aard met zich mee. Zij was nog even sluw als in haar jeugd, toen de Egyptenaren al met haar naar bed gingen, hun lusten op haar botvierden en haar beroofden van haar maagdelijkheid. 9Daarom leverde Ik haar uit aan de Assyriërs en hun afgoden van wie zij zo hield. 10Zij trokken haar de kleren uit, doodden haar en namen haar kinderen mee als slaven. Iedere vrouw in het land kende haar naam als die van een zondares die haar verdiende loon had gekregen.
11Maar toen Oholiba—Jeruzalem—zag wat er met haar zuster was gebeurd, ging zij haar gelijk achterna en zondigde zelfs nog meer dan haar zuster. 12Ook zij begon te lonken naar haar Assyrische buren, die knappe jongemannen op hun mooie paarden, die legeraanvoerders in hun schitterende uniformen, stuk voor stuk aantrekkelijke mannen. 13Ik zag dat zij dezelfde heilloze weg opging als haar oudere zuster. 14-15 Zij was in feite nog meer ontaard dan Ohola, want zij werd verliefd op figuren die op een muur waren geschilderd! Afbeeldingen van Babylonische legeraanvoerders in strakke rode uniformen, met prachtige gordels en mooie tulbanden op het hoofd. 16Toen zij die afbeeldingen zag, verlangde zij ernaar zich aan die afgebeelde mannen te geven. Daarom stuurde zij boodschappers naar Chaldea om hen bij haar uit te nodigen. 17Zij gaven gehoor aan haar uitnodiging en pleegden overspel met haar. Zij onteerden haar in het liefdesbed, maar daarna begon zij hen te haten en verbrak alle betrekkingen met hen. 18En Ik walgde van haar, net zoals Ik van haar zuster had gewalgd, omdat zij schaamteloos met hen flirtte en zich overgaf aan hun lusten. 19-20 Maar dat deed haar niets. Zij begon zelfs op nog grotere schaal prostitutie te bedrijven, toen zij zich de tijd herinnerde dat zij een prostituee in Egypte was. Daar leefde zij zich uit met mannen die zich lieten leiden door dierlijke driften. 21En zo verviel u weer in de schanddaden van vroeger, toen u uw maagdelijkheid aan de Egyptenaren gaf.
22Daarom zegt de Oppermachtige Here dat Hij naar u, Oholiba, diezelfde volken zal sturen die u met walging de rug toekeerde. 23“Want de Babyloniërs zullen komen, de Chaldeeën, de mannen van Pekod, Soa en Koa en ook de Assyriërs, aantrekkelijke jonge officieren, rijdend op hun paarden. 24Zij zullen vanuit het noorden met paarden en strijdwagens, met ontelbaar veel strijders tegen u optrekken. Zij zijn helemaal op de strijd voorbereid. Hun goed bewapende mannen zullen u omsingelen en Ik zal ze op u loslaten om met u te doen wat zij willen. 25Ik zal u mijn jaloerse toorn laten voelen, want zij zullen u met nietsontziende wreedheid behandelen. Zij zullen uw neus en oren afsnijden. Uw overlevenden zullen worden gedood en uw kinderen als slaven worden weggevoerd. Alles wat overblijft, zal worden verbrand. 26Zij zullen u beroven van uw mooie kleren en uw sieraden. 27Zo zal Ik een einde maken aan uw schandelijke gedrag en het overspel, waarmee u in Egypte bent begonnen. En u zult nooit meer terugverlangen naar Egypte en haar goden.” 28Want de Oppermachtige Here zegt: “Ik zal u zeker aan uw vijanden overgeven, aan degenen die u de rug hebt toegekeerd. 29Zij zullen hun haat op u uitleven, u van al uw eigendommen beroven en u naakt en met lege handen achterlaten. En de hele wereld zal schande spreken over uw overspel. 30U hebt dit uzelf op de hals gehaald door andere volken na te lopen en u met al hun afgoden te verontreinigen. 31U bent uw zuster achterna gegaan, daarom zal Ik u met dezelfde rampen straffen. 32Ja, de rampen die haar hebben getroffen, zullen ook u treffen en de beker waaruit zij heeft gedronken, was groot en tot de rand toe gevuld. U zult dezelfde beker leegdrinken en de hele wereld zal u minachten en u bespotten in uw leed. 33Als een dronkaard zult u wankelen onder de vreselijke slagen van ellende en verdriet, net als uw zuster Samaria. 34In uw vreselijke lijden zult u de beker van de angst tot op de bodem toe leegdrinken en ook de laatste druppels er nog uitlikken, daarna zult u hem in stukken gooien en met de scherven uw borsten openhalen. Zo heb Ik gesproken,” zegt de Here. 35“Omdat u Mij hebt vergeten en Mij de rug hebt toegekeerd, moet u zelf de gevolgen van al uw zonde dragen.”
36Mensenzoon, u moet deze twee overspelige vrouwen, Jeruzalem en Samaria, beschuldigen van al hun afschuwelijke daden. 37Want zij hebben zowel overspel als moorden gepleegd, zij hebben afgoden vereerd en hun kinderen vermoord die zij Mij hadden gebaard. Zij hebben hen als offers op hun altaren verbrand!
38Op dezelfde dag dat zij mijn tempel verontreinigden en mijn sabbatten negeerden, 39de dag dat zij hun kinderen vermoordden voor hun afgoden, op die dag hebben zij de tempel ontwijd. Zo weinig ontzag hebben zij voor Mij! 40“U liet zelfs uit verre landen mannen met hun afgoden naar u toekomen om die te aanbidden. U verwelkomde hen zelfs! U baadde zich, beschilderde uw oogleden en droeg uw mooiste sieraden voor hen. 41U zat op een pronkbed en legde mijn reukwerk en mijn olie op een tafel die voor u stond. 42Vanuit uw huis kwamen de geluiden van een feestende menigte, van onbehoorlijke kerels en dronkaards uit de wildernis die banden om uw polsen deden en prachtige kronen op uw hoofd zetten.
43Zouden zij overspel plegen met deze verlepte prostituees? 44Zij gingen werkelijk naar Samaria en Jeruzalem, die schaamteloze prostituees, zoals je een bordeel binnenstapt. 45Maar de rechtvaardigen zullen hen ontmaskeren. En dan zal blijken dat zij overspeligen en moordenaars zijn, want er kleeft bloed aan hun handen. Zij zullen tegen hen de straffen uitspreken die de wet voorschrijft.” 46De Oppermachtige Here zegt: “Breng een leger tegen hen op de been en geef hen over aan mishandeling en plundering. 47Want hun vijanden zullen hen stenigen en hen doden met zwaarden, zij zullen hun zonen en dochters afslachten en hun huizen platbranden. 48Zo zal Ik afrekenen met de schandelijke daden en de afgoderij in dit land. Mijn oordeel zal voor alle vrouwen die het zien een waarschuwing zijn uw voorbeeld niet te volgen. 49Want u zult volledig moeten betalen voor uw ontucht, uw afgodenverering. U zult zwaar moeten boeten en zo zult u tot de erkenning komen dat alleen Ik, de Here, God ben.” ’
