1Hear, O Israel: Thou art to pass over Jordan this day, to go in to possess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fenced up to heaven, 2A people great and tall, the children of the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and of whom thou hast heard say, Who can stand before the children of Anak! 3Understand therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is he which goeth over before thee; as a consuming fire he shall destroy them, and he shall bring them down before thy face: so shalt thou drive them out, and destroy them quickly, as the LORD hath said unto thee. 4Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. 5Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. 6Understand therefore, that the LORD thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.
7¶ Remember, and forget not, how thou provokedst the LORD thy God to wrath in the wilderness: from the day that thou didst depart out of the land of Egypt, until ye came unto this place, ye have been rebellious against the LORD. 8Also in Horeb ye provoked the LORD to wrath, so that the LORD was angry with you to have destroyed you. 9When I was gone up into the mount to receive the tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant which the LORD made with you, then I abode in the mount forty days and forty nights, I neither did eat bread nor drink water: 10And the LORD delivered unto me two tables of stone written with the finger of God; and on them was written according to all the words, which the LORD spake with you in the mount out of the midst of the fire in the day of the assembly. 11And it came to pass at the end of forty days and forty nights, that the LORD gave me the two tables of stone, even the tables of the covenant. 12And the LORD said unto me, Arise, get thee down quickly from hence; for thy people which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt have corrupted themselves; they are quickly turned aside out of the way which I commanded them; they have made them a molten image. 13Furthermore the LORD spake unto me, saying, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people: 14Let me alone, that I may destroy them, and blot out their name from under heaven: and I will make of thee a nation mightier and greater than they. 15So I turned and came down from the mount, and the mount burned with fire: and the two tables of the covenant were in my two hands. 16And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinned against the LORD your God, and had made you a molten calf: ye had turned aside quickly out of the way which the LORD had commanded you. 17And I took the two tables, and cast them out of my two hands, and brake them before your eyes. 18And I fell down before the LORD, as at the first, forty days and forty nights: I did neither eat bread, nor drink water, because of all your sins which ye sinned, in doing wickedly in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger. 19For I was afraid of the anger and hot displeasure, wherewith the LORD was wroth against you to destroy you. But the LORD hearkened unto me at that time also. 20And the LORD was very angry with Aaron to have destroyed him: and I prayed for Aaron also the same time. 21And I took your sin, the calf which ye had made, and burnt it with fire, and stamped it, and ground it very small, even until it was as small as dust: and I cast the dust thereof into the brook that descended out of the mount. 22And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibroth-hattaavah, ye provoked the LORD to wrath. 23Likewise when the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, Go up and possess the land which I have given you; then ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your God, and ye believed him not, nor hearkened to his voice. 24Ye have been rebellious against the LORD from the day that I knew you. 25Thus I fell down before the LORD forty days and forty nights, as I fell down at the first; because the LORD had said he would destroy you. 26I prayed therefore unto the LORD, and said, O Lord GOD, destroy not thy people and thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed through thy greatness, which thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27Remember thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin: 28Lest the land whence thou broughtest us out say, Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which he promised them, and because he hated them, he hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. 29Yet they are thy people and thine inheritance, which thou broughtest out by thy mighty power and by thy stretched out arm.
نافرمانی قوم اسرائيل
1-2ای قوم اسرائيل گوش كنيد! امروز بايد از رود اردن بگذريد تا سرزمين آن سوس رودخانه را تصرف كنيد. قومهايی كه در آنجا زندگی می‌كنند بزرگتر و قويتر از شما هستند و شهرهايی حصاردار دارند. آنها غولهايی هستند كه كسی نمی‌تواند در برابر ايشان ايستادگی كند. 3ولی بدانيد كه خداوند، خدايتان مثل آتشی سوزاننده پيشاپيش شما در حركت خواهد بود و آنها را هلاک خواهد كرد. همانطور كه خداوند فرموده است شما بزودی بر آنها پيروز شده، آنها را از سرزمينشان بيرون خواهيد راند.
4پس از اينكه خداوند اين كار را برايتان كرد، نگوييد: «چون ما مردم خوبی هستيم خداوند، ما را به اين سرزمين آورده تا آن را تصاحب كنيم.» زيرا خداوند به دليل شرارت اقوام اين سرزمين است كه آنها را از آنجا بيرون می‌راند. 5خداوند به هيچ وجه به سبب اينكه شما قومی خوب و درستكار هستيد اين سرزمين را به شما نمی‌دهد، بلكه به سبب شرارت اين اقوام و برای وعده‌هايی كه به پدرانتان ابراهيم و اسحاق و يعقوب داده است اين كار را می‌كند. 6باز هم تكرار می‌كنم: خداوند، خدايتان به اين دليل اين سرزمين حاصلخيز را به شما نمی‌دهد كه مردم خوبی هستيد. شما مردمی سركش هستيد.
7فراموش نكنيد كه از روزی كه از مصر بيرون آمديد تا به حال مدام خداوند، خدايتان را در بيابان به خشم آورديد و در تمام اين مدت عليه او قيام كرديد. 8او را در كوه حوريب غضبناک ساختيد به حدی كه خواست شما را نابود كند. 9من به كوه رفته بودم تا عهدی را كه خداوند، خدايتان با شما بسته بود يعنی همان لوحهای سنگی كه قوانين روی آنها حک شده بود، بگيرم. چهل شبانه روز در آنجا بودم و در تمام اين مدت لب به غذا نزدم و حتی يک جرعه آب هم ننوشيدم. 10-11در پايان آن چهل شبانه روز، خداوند آن دو لوح سنگی را كه قوانين عهد خود را بر آنها نوشته بود، به من داد. اين همان قوانينی بود كه او هنگامی كه مردم در پای كوه جمع شده بودند از درون آتش اعلام فرموده بود. 12او به من امر فرمود كه فوراً از كوه پايين بروم، زيرا قومی كه من آنها را راهنمايی كرده، از مصر بيرون آورده بودم فاسد شده و خيلی زود از احكام خداوند روی گردان شده، بتی ساخته بودند.
13-14خداوند به من گفت: «مرا واگذار تا اين قوم سركش را نابود كنم و نامشان را از زير آسمان محو ساخته، قوم ديگری از تو بوجود آورم، قومی كه بزرگتر و قویتر از ايشان باشد.»
15من در حالی که دو لوح قوانين خداوند را در دست داشتم از كوه كه شعله‌های آتش، آن را فرا گرفته بود، پايين آمدم. 16در آنجا چشمم به بت گوساله شكلی افتاد كه شما ساخته بوديد. چه زود از فرمان خداوند، خدايتان سرپيچی كرده، نسبت به او گناه ورزيديد! 17من لوحها را به زمين انداختم و در برابر چشمانتان آنها را خرد كردم. 18آنگاه به مدت چهل شبانه روز ديگر، در حضور خداوند رو بر زمين نهادم. نه نانی خوردم و نه آبی نوشيدم؛ زيرا شما بر ضد خدا گناه كرده، او را به خشم آورده بوديد. 19می‌ترسيدم از شدت خشم، شما را نابود كند. ولی يک بار ديگر خداوند خواهش مرا اجابت كرد. 20هارون نيز در خطر بزرگی بود چون خداوند بر او غضبناک شده، می‌خواست او را بكشد، ولی من دعا كردم و خداوند او را بخشيد. 21من آن گوساله را كه شما از طلا ساخته بوديد و مظهر گناه شما بود برداشته، در آتش انداختم، بعد آن را كوبيدم و به صورت غباری نرم درآورده، به داخل نهری كه از دل كوه جاری بود ريختم.
22شما در تبعيره و مسا و قبروت هتاوه نيز خشم خداوند را برافروختيد. 23در قادش برنيع وقتی كه خداوند به شما گفت به سرزمينی كه به شما داده است داخل شويد از او اطاعت ننموديد زيرا باور نكرديد كه او به شما كمک خواهد كرد. 24آری، از اولين روزی كه شما را شناختم، عليه خداوند ياغيگری كرده‌ايد. 25پس خداوند خواست شما را هلاک كند، ولی من چهل شبانه روز در برابر او به خاک افتادم 26و التماس كرده، گفتم: «ای خداوند، قوم خود را نابود نكن. آنها ميراث تو هستند كه با قدرت عظيمت از مصر نجات يافتند. 27خدمتگزارانت ابراهيم و اسحاق و يعقوب را به ياد آور و از لجاجت و عصيان و گناه اين قوم چشم‌پوشی كن. 28زيرا اگر آنها را از بين ببری مصریان خواهند گفت كه خداوند قادر نبود آنها را به سرزمينی كه به ايشان وعده داده بود برساند. آنها خواهند گفت كه خداوند ايشان را نابود كرد، چون از ايشان بيزار بود و آنها را به بيابان برد تا آنها را بكشد. 29ای خداوند، آنها قوم تو و ميراث تو هستند كه آنها را با قدرت عظيم و دست توانای خود از مصر بيرون آوردی.»
