1And it shall come to pass, when all these things are come upon thee, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before thee, and thou shalt call them to mind among all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath driven thee, 2And shalt return unto the LORD thy God, and shalt obey his voice according to all that I command thee this day, thou and thy children, with all thine heart, and with all thy soul; 3That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. 4If any of thine be driven out unto the outmost parts of heaven, from thence will the LORD thy God gather thee, and from thence will he fetch thee: 5And the LORD thy God will bring thee into the land which thy fathers possessed, and thou shalt possess it; and he will do thee good, and multiply thee above thy fathers. 6And the LORD thy God will circumcise thine heart, and the heart of thy seed, to love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, that thou mayest live. 7And the LORD thy God will put all these curses upon thine enemies, and on them that hate thee, which persecuted thee. 8And thou shalt return and obey the voice of the LORD, and do all his commandments which I command thee this day. 9And the LORD thy God will make thee plenteous in every work of thine hand, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, for good: for the LORD will again rejoice over thee for good, as he rejoiced over thy fathers: 10If thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep his commandments and his statutes which are written in this book of the law, and if thou turn unto the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul.
11¶ For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off. 12It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 13Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it? 14But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.
15¶ See, I have set before thee this day life and good, and death and evil; 16In that I command thee this day to love the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commandments and his statutes and his judgments, that thou mayest live and multiply: and the LORD thy God shall bless thee in the land whither thou goest to possess it. 17But if thine heart turn away, so that thou wilt not hear, but shalt be drawn away, and worship other gods, and serve them; 18I denounce unto you this day, that ye shall surely perish, and that ye shall not prolong your days upon the land, whither thou passest over Jordan to go to possess it. 19I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.
Les bénédictions d’un retour à l’Eternel
1Ces paroles que je viens de prononcer, les bénédictions et les malédictions entre lesquelles je vous offre le choix, se réaliseront. Si vous les prenez de nouveau à cœur, au milieu de tous les peuples parmi lesquels l’Eternel votre Dieu vous aura dispersés, 2si vous revenez à l’Eternel votre Dieu et si vous l’écoutez en obéissant de tout votre cœur et de tout votre être, vous et vos enfants, à tout ce que je vous ordonne aujourd’hui, 3alors l’Eternel votre Dieu aura compassion de vous : il vous restaurera30.3 On peut peut-être traduire il ramènera ceux d’entre vous qui auront été en captivité. et vous rassemblera pour vous faire revenir de chez tous les peuples parmi lesquels il vous aura dispersés. 4Même si les exilés de votre peuple sont aux confins du monde, l’Eternel votre Dieu ira les chercher là-bas et les rassembler 5pour les ramener au pays que leurs ancêtres auront possédé et ils en retrouveront la possession. Il les y rendra plus heureux et plus nombreux que leurs ancêtres. 6L’Eternel votre Dieu vous circoncira le cœur et celui de vos descendants pour que vous l’aimiez de tout votre cœur et de tout votre être, et qu’ainsi vous viviez. 7Il infligera alors toutes ces malédictions que je vous ai décrites à vos ennemis, à ceux qui vous haïssent et qui vous auront persécutés. 8Quant à vous, vous reviendrez à lui, vous l’écouterez et vous appliquerez tous ses commandements que je vous transmets aujourd’hui. 9L’Eternel votre Dieu vous comblera de bonheur en faisant réussir tout ce que vous entreprendrez ; il vous donnera de nombreux enfants, il multipliera votre bétail et vous accordera d’abondantes récoltes. Car l’Eternel prendra de nouveau plaisir à votre bonheur comme il prenait plaisir à celui de vos ancêtres, 10pourvu que vous l’écoutiez en obéissant à ses commandements et ses ordonnances consignés dans ce livre de la Loi, et que vous reveniez à lui de tout votre cœur et de tout votre être !
La Loi dans le cœur
11Le code de lois que je vous donne aujourd’hui n’est certainement pas trop difficile pour vous, ni hors de votre portée. 12Il n’est pas au ciel pour que l’on dise : « Qui montera au ciel pour aller nous le chercher et nous le faire comprendre afin que nous puissions l’appliquer ? » 13Il n’est pas non plus au-delà de l’océan pour que l’on dise : « Qui traversera pour nous les mers pour aller nous le chercher, et nous le faire comprendre, afin que nous puissions l’appliquer ? » 14Non, la parole est toute proche de vous : elle est dans votre bouche et dans votre cœur, pour que vous l’appliquiez30.14 Les formules de ce verset sont reprises en Rm 10.6-8..
La vie et la mort
15Voyez, je place aujourd’hui devant vous, d’un côté, la vie et le bonheur, de l’autre, la mort et le malheur. 16Ce que je vous commande aujourd’hui, c’est d’aimer l’Eternel votre Dieu, de suivre le chemin qu’il vous trace et d’obéir à ses commandements, ses ordonnances et ses lois. En faisant cela, vous aurez la vie, vous deviendrez nombreux et vous serez bénis par l’Eternel votre Dieu dans le pays où vous vous rendez pour en prendre possession. 17Mais si votre cœur se détourne de lui, si vous refusez de lui obéir et si vous vous laissez entraîner à adorer d’autres dieux et à leur rendre un culte, 18je vous préviens dès aujourd’hui que vous périrez à coup sûr. Vous ne vivrez pas longtemps dans le pays au-delà du Jourdain où vous vous rendez pour en prendre possession.
19Je prends aujourd’hui le ciel et la terre à témoins : je vous offre le choix entre la vie et la mort, entre la bénédiction et la malédiction. Choisissez donc la vie, afin que vous viviez, vous et vos descendants. 20Choisissez d’aimer l’Eternel votre Dieu, de lui obéir et de lui rester attachés, car c’est lui qui vous fait vivre et qui pourra vous accorder de passer de nombreux jours dans le pays que l’Eternel a promis par serment de donner à vos ancêtres Abraham, Isaac et Jacob30.20 Voir Gn 12.7 ; 26.3 ; 28.13..
