1In the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed: then he wrote the dream, and told the sum of the matters.7.1 had: Chaldee, saw7.1 matters: or, words 2Daniel spake and said, I saw in my vision by night, and, behold, the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea. 3And four great beasts came up from the sea, diverse one from another. 4The first was like a lion, and had eagle’s wings: I beheld till the wings thereof were plucked, and it was lifted up from the earth, and made stand upon the feet as a man, and a man’s heart was given to it.7.4 and it: or, wherewith it 5And behold another beast, a second, like to a bear, and it raised up itself on one side, and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it: and they said thus unto it, Arise, devour much flesh.7.5 it raised…: or, it raised up one dominion 6After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it. 7After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible, and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it; and it had ten horns. 8I considered the horns, and, behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots: and, behold, in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man, and a mouth speaking great things.
9¶ I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire. 10A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him: thousand thousands ministered unto him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him: the judgment was set, and the books were opened. 11I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame. 12As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.7.12 their lives…: Chaldee, a prolonging in life was given them 13I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him. 14And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
15¶ I Daniel was grieved in my spirit in the midst of my body, and the visions of my head troubled me.7.15 body: Chaldee, sheath 16I came near unto one of them that stood by, and asked him the truth of all this. So he told me, and made me know the interpretation of the things. 17These great beasts, which are four, are four kings, which shall arise out of the earth. 18But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.7.18 most…: Chaldee, high ones, that is, things, or, places 19Then I would know the truth of the fourth beast, which was diverse from all the others, exceeding dreadful, whose teeth were of iron, and his nails of brass; which devoured, brake in pieces, and stamped the residue with his feet;7.19 from…: Chaldee, from all those 20And of the ten horns that were in his head, and of the other which came up, and before whom three fell; even of that horn that had eyes, and a mouth that spake very great things, whose look was more stout than his fellows. 21I beheld, and the same horn made war with the saints, and prevailed against them; 22Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom. 23Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. 24And the ten horns out of this kingdom are ten kings that shall arise: and another shall rise after them; and he shall be diverse from the first, and he shall subdue three kings. 25And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time. 26But the judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and to destroy it unto the end. 27And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.7.27 dominions: or, rulers 28Hitherto is the end of the matter. As for me Daniel, my cogitations much troubled me, and my countenance changed in me: but I kept the matter in my heart.

ダニエルの見た四頭の獣の夢
1バビロンの王ベルシャツァルの治世第一年のある晩、ダニエルは夢を見、それを書き留めました。夢は次のようなものです。
2「大海に激しい嵐が起こり、強風が四方から吹きまくっていました。 3すると、四頭の巨大な獣が海から上がって来たのです。四頭とも、みな別の生き物でした。 4第一の獣はライオンのようで、わしの翼をつけています。見ていると、その翼はもぎ取られ、もはや飛べなくなり、人間のように地上に二本足で立ち、人間の心が与えられました。 5第二の獣は熊のようで、横ざまに寝ていました。牙の間に肋骨を三本くわえています。すると、それに向かって、『起き上がれ！ 大ぜいの人を食らえ！』と言う声がしました。 6第三の奇妙な獣は、ひょうのようでした。背中には鳥のような翼があり、さらに四つの頭があります。しかも、この動物には全人類を治める偉大な権力が与えられました。 7さらに、夢の中で見ていると、第四の獣が海から姿を現しました。その形相の恐ろしさは、ことばに表せません。また、その強さは信じられないほどです。巨大な鉄の牙で餌食を食い裂き、ほかの餌食を足で踏みつぶしてしまいました。この第四の獣は、前に現れた獣よりはるかに荒々しく残忍で、十本の角を持っていました。 8その角を見ていると、突然、角の間から別の小さな角が出て来ました。そのために、最初の十本の角のうち三本が根こそぎ引き抜かれてしまいました。この小さな角には、人間の目と、大言壮語する口がついていました。
9見ていると、幾つかの王座が備えられ、
全能の神が審判のため、
その座におつきになりました。
その衣は雪のように白く、
髪の毛は純白の羊毛のようでした。
燃える車輪で運ばれて来た火の王座に、
神は座りました。
10神の前からは火の川が流れ出ていました。
何百万の御使いが神に仕えており、
何億という人が神の前に立って、
さばきを待っていました。
それから法廷が開かれ、
幾つかの書物が開かれたのです。
11見ていると、あの残忍な第四の獣が殺され、体を焼かれてしまいました。全能の神に対して尊大にふるまい、その小さな角を誇っていたからです。 12残りの三頭は、王国を取り上げられたものの、しばらくは生き延びることを許されました。
13次に、人のように見えるお方が、
天からの雲に乗って来るのが見えました。
その方は、神の前に導かれました。
14人のように見えるこの方は、
世界の国々を治める権力と栄光とを
与えられていました。
それで、どの国の民もみな、
この方に従わなければなりません。
この方の権力は永遠で、
決して終わることがありません。
その国は滅びることがないのです。
夢の解釈
15私は夢で見たことによって、すっかり混乱し、動揺しました。 16そこで、王座のそばに立っている者の一人に近づき、見たことすべてについて、その意味を尋ねました。すると、次のように説明してくれたのです。 17『四頭の巨大な獣は、のちに地上を治める四人の王を表している。 18だが最後には、いと高き神の民が、代々限りなく世界を治めるようになる。』
19次に、第四の獣について尋ねました。それはぞっとするほど恐ろしく、残忍で、鉄の牙と青銅の爪で人々を引き裂き、足で他の人々を踏み殺しました。 20また、十本の角と、あとから出て来て、前の十本のうち三本を滅ぼした小さい角のことも尋ねました。その小さい角には目があり、大声で自慢する口があって、他の角よりも強いようでした。 21見ていると、その角は神の民と戦って、勝ったのです。 22しかしその勝利も、永遠の神が来て法廷を開き、神の民の正しさを立証して、彼らに全世界を治める権威をお与えになるまでのことでした。
23王座のそばに立っている人は、このように説明してくれました。
『この第四の獣は、世界を治める第四の国
（一般にはローマ帝国であると言われる）のことだ。
それは他の国々をしのぐ残忍さで、
全世界を食い尽くし、
自分の前にあるすべてのものを打ち壊す。
24十本の角は、この国から立つ十人の王のことだ。
それから、もう一人の王が立つが、
他の十人の王より残忍で、
その中の三人の王を打ち倒してしまう。
25この王は、いと高き神に反抗し、
聖徒たちを迫害して滅ぼし、
すべての法律、道徳、慣習を変えようとする。
神の民も、三年半の間、この王の手中にあって、
どうすることもできない。
26だが、永遠の神が来て正義の法廷を開き、
この残忍な王からすべての権力を取り去り、
完全に滅ぼし尽くす。
27それから、天の下にあるすべての国と権力が、
神の民に与えられる。
彼らは永遠にすべてのものを治め、
すべての支配者が彼らに仕え、従うようになる。』
28夢はそこで終わりました。目を覚ますと、私はひどく動揺し、顔色も恐怖で青ざめていました。夢で見たことは、だれにも話しませんでした。」
