1In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah came Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon unto Jerusalem, and besieged it. 2And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with part of the vessels of the house of God: which he carried into the land of Shinar to the house of his god; and he brought the vessels into the treasure house of his god.
3¶ And the king spake unto Ashpenaz the master of his eunuchs, that he should bring certain of the children of Israel, and of the king’s seed, and of the princes; 4Children in whom was no blemish, but well favoured, and skilful in all wisdom, and cunning in knowledge, and understanding science, and such as had ability in them to stand in the king’s palace, and whom they might teach the learning and the tongue of the Chaldeans. 5And the king appointed them a daily provision of the king’s meat, and of the wine which he drank: so nourishing them three years, that at the end thereof they might stand before the king.1.5 the wine…: Heb. the wine of his drink 6Now among these were of the children of Judah, Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: 7Unto whom the prince of the eunuchs gave names: for he gave unto Daniel the name of Belteshazzar; and to Hananiah, of Shadrach; and to Mishael, of Meshach; and to Azariah, of Abed-nego.
8¶ But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s meat, nor with the wine which he drank: therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 9Now God had brought Daniel into favour and tender love with the prince of the eunuchs. 10And the prince of the eunuchs said unto Daniel, I fear my lord the king, who hath appointed your meat and your drink: for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king.1.10 worse…: Heb. sadder1.10 sort: or, term, or, continuance? 11Then said Daniel to Melzar, whom the prince of the eunuchs had set over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,1.11 Melzar: or, the steward 12Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.1.12 pulse: Heb. of pulse1.12 to eat…: Heb. that we may eat, etc 13Then let our countenances be looked upon before thee, and the countenance of the children that eat of the portion of the king’s meat: and as thou seest, deal with thy servants. 14So he consented to them in this matter, and proved them ten days. 15And at the end of ten days their countenances appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat the portion of the king’s meat. 16Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat, and the wine that they should drink; and gave them pulse.
17¶ As for these four children, God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.1.17 Daniel…: or, he made Daniel understand 18Now at the end of the days that the king had said he should bring them in, then the prince of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar. 19And the king communed with them; and among them all was found none like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah: therefore stood they before the king. 20And in all matters of wisdom and understanding, that the king enquired of them, he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers that were in all his realm.1.20 wisdom…: Heb. wisdom of understanding 21And Daniel continued even unto the first year of king Cyrus.
Daniel vid Nebukadnessars hov
1I Juda kung Jojakims tredje regeringsår1:1 605 f.Kr. kom Babyloniens kung Nebukadnessar mot Jerusalem och belägrade staden. 2Herren överlämnade Jojakim, kungen av Juda, åt honom, liksom en del av föremålen i Guds hus. Han tog med sig dem till sin guds hus i Shinar1:2 Äldre namn på Babylonien. och förde dem till sin guds skattkammare.
3Sedan gav kungen i uppdrag åt Aspenas, chefen för hans hovtjänstemän, att bland israeliterna välja ut unga män från den kungliga familjen och från andra framstående släkter, 4sådana som inte hade några fysiska defekter, som såg bra ut, var begåvade, kloka och kunniga, som kvalificerade att tjänstgöra i det kungliga palatset. De skulle undervisas i kaldéernas litteratur och språk. 5Kungen bestämde att en daglig portion av mat och vin skulle serveras dem från hans eget bord. De skulle utbildas i tre år för att därefter träda i kungens tjänst.
6Bland dem fanns Daniel, Hananja, Mishael och Asarja, från Judas stam. 7Men chefen för hovtjänstemännen gav dem nya namn: Daniel kallades Belteshassar, Hananja kallades Shadrak, Mishael kallades Meshak och Asarja kallades Aved-Nego.
8Daniel bestämde sig för att inte orena sig med kungens mat och vin. Han bad chefen för hovtjänstemännen om lov att få slippa orena sig. 9Gud lät Daniel finna nåd och välvilja hos chefen för hovtjänstemännen, 10men denne sa till Daniel: ”Jag är rädd för min herre kungen, som har bestämt vad ni ska äta och dricka. Varför skulle han behöva finna att ni ser sämre ut än de andra unga männen i er ålder? Då skulle jag riskera mitt huvud för er inför kungen.”
11Daniel sa till vakten, som chefen för hovtjänstemännen hade utsett att ha uppsikt över honom och Hananja, Mishael och Asarja: 12”Testa oss, dina tjänare, under en tiodagarsperiod: Ge oss bara grönsaker att äta och vatten att dricka. 13Jämför oss sedan med de unga män som har ätit kungens mat. Behandla sedan dina tjänare efter vad du ser.”
14Han lyssnade till dem och testade dem i tio dagar. 15Efter de tio dagarna såg de bättre och mer välnärda ut än alla de unga män som ätit kungens mat. 16Vakten lät dem då slippa den mat och det vin som var bestämt för dem och gav dem grönsaker i stället.
17Gud gav dessa fyra unga män kunskap och insikt i all slags litteratur och lärdom. Daniel kunde dessutom förstå alla slags syner och drömmar. 18När den tid som kungen hade bestämt var över förde chefen för hovtjänstemännen fram dem inför Nebukadnessar. 19Kungen samtalade med dem och fann ingen bland alla andra som var som Daniel, Hananja, Mishael och Asarja. Så trädde de i kungens tjänst. 20I alla frågor som krävde vishet och förstånd och där kungen rådfrågade dem fann han dem tio gånger visare än alla magiker och besvärjare i hela hans rike.
21Daniel blev kvar där ända till kung Kyros första regeringsår.1:21 Kyros regerade i Persien 559-530 och erövrade Babylon 539 f.Kr.
