1And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita. 2And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. 3And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. 4And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. 5And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. 6Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
7In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously. 8And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him. 9So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed: 10Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded us with such things as were necessary.
11And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux. 12And landing at Syracuse, we tarried there three days. 13And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli: 14Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome. 15And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage. 16And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
17And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men and brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans. 18Who, when they had examined me, would have let me go, because there was no cause of death in me. 19But when the Jews spake against it, I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of. 20For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see you, and to speak with you: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain. 21And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee. 22But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against. 23And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into his lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and out of the prophets, from morning till evening. 24And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not. 25And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers, 26Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive: 27For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them. 28Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and that they will hear it. 29And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
30And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him, 31Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
Pavel în Malta
1După ce am fost salvați din primejdie, am aflat că insula se numea Malta. 2Barbarii2 Cu referire aici la populația băștinașă. ne‑au arătat o bunăvoință neobișnuită, căci au aprins un foc și ne‑au primit bine pe toți, din cauză că începuse ploaia și din cauza frigului. 3Pavel a adunat o grămadă de vreascuri și, în timp ce le punea pe foc, a ieșit o viperă din cauza căldurii și i s‑a prins de mână. 4Când barbarii au văzut șarpele atârnând de mâna lui, și‑au zis unii altora: „Fără îndoială că omul acesta care a fost salvat din mare este un ucigaș, căci Dreptatea4 Gr.: Dike, zeița dreptății la vechii greci. Ea apare în literatura greacă pre‑clasică și în cea clasică fie alături de Zeus (stând lângă tronul lui), fie alături de alte zeițe sau fiind una dintre cele trei Hore, zeități ale anotimpurilor și ale ordinii naturale și sociale în mitologia greacă. nu‑l lasă să trăiască!“ 5Pavel însă a scuturat șarpele în foc, fără să sufere niciun rău. 6Ei se așteptau să se umfle sau să cadă deodată mort. Dar, după ce au așteptat mult și au văzut că nu i se întâmplă nimic neobișnuit, și‑au schimbat părerea și au zis că este un zeu.
7Aproape de locul acela se aflau niște pământuri ale fruntașului7 Insula Malta avea statutul de municipiu, iar guvernatorul ei purta titlul de municipi Melitesium primus omnium, „cel mai important dintre toți oamenii municipalității Maltei“. insulei, al cărui nume era Publius. El ne‑a primit și ne‑a găzduit cu ospitalitate timp de trei zile. 8Tatăl lui Publius zăcea atunci în pat, suferind de friguri și dizenterie. Pavel s‑a dus la el, s‑a rugat punându‑și mâinile peste el și l‑a vindecat. 9După ce s‑a întâmplat aceasta, ceilalți de pe insulă care aveau boli, au venit și ei și au fost vindecați. 10Ei ne‑au cinstit în multe feluri, iar când am fost gata de plecare ne‑au pus la dispoziție lucrurile de care aveam nevoie.
Pavel sosește în Roma
11După trei luni, am plecat pe mare cu o corabie din Alexandria care iernase pe insulă și care avea emblema Dioscurilor11 Castor și Pollux, considerați în mitologia greco-romană „fiii lui Zeus“ (gr.: dioscuroi) și protectorii marinarilor.. 12Am debarcat în Siracuza, unde am rămas timp de trei zile, 13iar de acolo am plecat mai departe și am sosit în Regium. După o zi a început să bată un vânt dinspre sud, iar în ziua următoare am ajuns în Puteoli, 14unde am găsit frați și am fost rugați să rămânem cu ei șapte zile. Și așa am ajuns în Roma. 15Când frații de acolo au auzit despre noi, au venit în întâmpinarea noastră până la Forumul lui Apius și până la „Trei taverne“. Văzându‑i, Pavel I‑a mulțumit lui Dumnezeu și a fost încurajat.
16Când am intrat în Roma, centurionul i‑a predat pe prizonieri căpitanului gărzilor, iar lui Pavel i s‑a dat voie să locuiască singur, sub paza unui soldat.
Pavel predică în Roma
17După trei zile, Pavel i‑a chemat la el pe fruntașii iudeilor, iar când aceștia s‑au adunat, le‑a zis:
– Bărbați, fraților, deși n‑am făcut nimic împotriva poporului nostru sau împotriva obiceiurilor părinților noștri, totuși am fost luat prizonier în Ierusalim și dat în mâinile romanilor. 18Aceștia, după ce m‑au cercetat, voiau să mă elibereze, fiindcă nu era în mine niciun motiv de condamnare la moarte. 19Dar, pentru că iudeii s‑au împotrivit, am fost constrâns să fac apel la Cezar, deși nu aveam de adus nicio acuzație împotriva neamului meu. 20Din acest motiv v‑am chemat să vă văd și să vă vorbesc. Căci din cauza speranței lui Israel port eu acest lanț!
21Ei i‑au răspuns:
– Noi n‑am primit din Iudeea nicio scrisoare cu privire la tine și niciunul dintre frații care au venit aici n‑a anunțat sau n‑a vorbit ceva rău despre tine. 22Dar am dori să auzim de la tine lucrurile pe care le gândești, căci, într-adevăr, ne este cunoscut faptul că pretutindeni se vorbește împotriva acestei partide.
23Așadar, ei i‑au stabilit lui Pavel o zi. Au venit mulți în locul unde era găzduit, iar el, de dimineață până seara, le‑a explicat lucrurile, depunând mărturie despre Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și încercând să‑i convingă cu privire la Isus, atât din Legea lui Moise, cât și din Profeți. 24Unii erau convinși de cele spuse de el, dar alții erau necredincioși. 25Fiindcă începuseră să plece acasă în dezacord unii cu alții, Pavel le‑a mai zis doar cuvintele acestea: „Bine a vorbit Duhul Sfânt strămoșilor25 Lit.: taților. voștri prin profetul Isaia, 26când a zis:
«Du‑te la poporul acesta și spune:
Veți auzi cu auzul,26 Sau: Auzind veți auzi, un idiom ebraic preluat în limba greacă, având sensul de a auzi mereu. dar nicidecum nu veți înțelege,
și veți privi cu privirea,26 Sau: Privind veți privi, un idiom ebraic preluat în limba greacă, având sensul de a privi mereu. dar nicidecum nu veți pricepe.
27Căci inima acestui popor s‑a împietrit.
Urechile lor aud greu, iar ochii li s‑au închis,
ca nu cumva să vadă cu ochii,
să audă cu urechile,
să înțeleagă cu inima,
să se întoarcă și să‑i vindec!»27 Vezi Is. 6:9-10.
28Să știți deci că mântuirea aceasta dată de Dumnezeu a fost trimisă neamurilor, și ele o vor asculta!“ 29Când Pavel a rostit aceste cuvinte, iudeii au plecat, având o mare dispută între ei.
30Pavel a rămas acolo doi ani întregi, într‑un loc pe care și‑l închiriase. Și‑i primea pe toți cei ce veneau la el, 31proclamând Împărăția lui Dumnezeu și dând învățătură despre Domnul Isus Cristos, cu toată îndrăzneala și fără nicio piedică.
